YOUTH POLITICAL EDUCATION
Understanding Wards and Polling Units in Nigeria
Nigeria operates a democratic system that starts from the grassroots level.
Two important parts of this structure are:
1. Polling Unit (PU)
A polling unit is the specific place where voters cast their votes during elections.
Examples:
School premises
Community halls
Open fields
It is the smallest electoral unit recognized by Independent National Electoral Commission.
2. Ward
A ward is made up of several polling units within a local government area.
Each ward has:
Ward executives
Party leaders
Political coordinators
Wards help political parties organize effectively at the grassroots.
Nigeria’s Political Structure
Nigeria has:
●36 States
●774 Local Government Areas
●Thousands of Wards
●Over 176,000 Polling Units
Political participation begins from the ward and polling unit level, not only during governorship or presidential elections.
