When did speaking English suddenly become the main criteria for learning a skill?
Today, a woman visited our office to make inquiries about enrolling her ward at Teetop Orb Academy for desktop publishing and graphic design. While we were discussing, she overheard some of my students conversing in Yoruba.
She immediately asked, “Why are they not speaking in English?”
At first, I was surprised because Yoruba is our mother tongue, and there’s nothing wrong with it. But at the same time, I also realized that since we are preparing our students for a professional journey, the language of business and global communication is English.
So, after she left, I had a short reflection and shared her words with my students.
And I’ve now decided that starting from Monday, Yoruba-speaking will be prohibited within the academy premises. Anyone who defaults will pay a fine.
This is not to look down on our language, I cherish Yoruba deeply but to ensure that our students are confident, fluent, and ready for the opportunities that come with their chosen career paths.
At Teetop Orb Academy, we want you not just skilled but also professional. Because in the real world, both results and communication matter.
