Romance-Investment Fraud Suspect Arrested in Istanbul After Allegedly Defrauding Hong Kong Dentist of $2.6 Million
Turkish authorities have arrested a Nigerian national in Istanbul in connection with an alleged romance-investment fraud scheme that reportedly cost a Hong Kong-based dentist approximately $2.6 million over a two-year period.
According to reports, the suspect allegedly posed online as a wealthy American businessman identified as “Richard,” gaining the trust of the victim, a dentist identified as Siu. Investigators say he cultivated a romantic relationship with the woman, promised marriage, and persuaded her to invest large sums of money by claiming he could generate substantial returns through investment opportunities.
Authorities allege that the suspect initially transferred what appeared to be profits back to the victim after her first investment, a tactic investigators believe was used to build confidence and encourage larger financial transfers. Over time, the woman reportedly sent funds totaling about $2.6 million.
The scheme allegedly unraveled after the promised returns failed to materialize and communication between the pair gradually diminished. Realizing she had lost her savings, the victim sought legal assistance and reported the matter to authorities.
Turkish police launched an investigation that ultimately led to the arrest of the suspect, identified in reports as 43-year-old Kingsley Or. During the operation, authorities also detained six other individuals believed to be connected to the alleged fraud network.
The suspects have reportedly been handed over to prosecutors for further legal proceedings as investigations continue.
Law enforcement officials have urged the public to exercise caution when engaging in online relationships involving financial requests or investment opportunities, warning that romance and investment scams remain among the fastest-growing forms of cyber-enabled fraud worldwide.
