FG KNOCKS SANUSI OVER UNCONSTRUCTIVE REMARKS ON LAUDABLE POLICIES

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, says the Federal Government does not need the stamp of approval from Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II of its laudable policies that is making life better for Nigerians.

This is contained in a statement by the minister today in Abuja.

According to the minister, Sanusi, like any other Nigerian, has the inalienable right to express opinions either in form of commendation or criticism on how the government is being ran.

The minister expressed disappointment, that reforms, widely recognised as essential by global experts including Sanusi himself, are now being subtly condemned because of shift in loyalty.

Idris stressed that Sanusi has a unique responsibility to contribute constructively rather than undermine reforms aimed at collective progress.

NIGER DELTA COMMUNITY DEMANDS 40 PERCENT OIL LICENCES

The Niger Delta Community Youth Association has demanded that 40 percent of oil licences be allocated to people from the oil-producing areas.

The group made the demand through demonstrations staged across the Niger Delta states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), as well as a petition addressed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio through its lawyer, Blessing Agbomhere.

The group stated that its demand for a fresh licensing bid was in line with stipulated extant laws, including the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) and the 1999 Constitution as amended.
It expressed concern over the recent alleged allocation of oil licences by the Nigeria Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) to corporate entities and individuals with no ties to the Niger Delta region.

In a statement in Abuja by the Youth Leader of the Association, Comrade Embale Jonathan; his deputy, Omeizah Ogumah stated that it is unacceptable for their ancestral lands, which have been ravaged and degraded by oil exploration, to be handed over to outsiders.

DANGOTE REFINERY CHALLENGES EUROPE’S FUEL EXPORTS – OPEC

The Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries says the Dangote Petroleum Refinery and its efforts to ramp up Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) production are impacting the PMS market in Europe.

The 650,000-capacity Dangote refinery, which began operations in January last year, started producing PMS in September, years after the country had relied solely on importation for its fuel needs.

Since it started production, the refinery has exported petrol, diesel, and aviation fuel to other countries within and outside Africa.

A report by OPEC on Wednesday stated that the emergence of Dangote refinery has reduced the importation of petroleum products from Europe to Nigeria.

In the last quarter of 2024, OPEC said “imports also declined, particularly oil product imports, improving the outlook for the external sector.”

The report stated that the gasoline crack spread in Rotterdam against Brent increased slightly on healthy exports although gasoline inventories at the Amsterdam-Rotterdam-Antwerp storage hub remained high.

It added that the gasoline inventory builds are expected to extend into the coming month amid a lengthening gasoline balance in the Atlantic Basin due to winter-season demand-side pressures.

OPEC maintained that the ongoing recovery in gasoline refinery output levels will likely exacerbate the already bearish market sentiment.

Meanwhile, the Monthly Oil Market Report disclosed that the average daily crude production in Nigeria hit 1.507 million barrels in December, according to data OPEC got from secondary sources.

ICPC FILES MONEY LAUNDERING CHARGES AGAINST EL’RUFAI’S FORMER AIDE, OTHERS

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission has filed five counts of money laundering against Jimi Lawal, a former aide to Malam Nasir El-Rufai.

Lawal, who served as Senior Special Adviser/Counsellor to the former governor, was charged alongside Umar Waziri, Yusuf Inuwa, and Solar Life Nigeria Limited.

He becomes the second ally of the ex-governor to be charged with corruption by the anti-graft agency.

Last year, the Kaduna State House of Assembly set up a panel to probe the financial dealings of the El-Rufai’s administration; and the panel in its report said it uncovered an alleged N423bn theft, an allegation the former governor vehemently denied and tagged politically motivated.

Two weeks ago, the ICPC disclosed that it had filed money laundering charges against Alhaji Muhammad Saidu, who served as Commissioner for Finance under El-Rufai.

The anti-graft agency accused the ex-finance commissioner of laundering N155m, adding that he was also under investigation for alleged N3.9bn fraud.

In another count, the ICPC alleged that in October 2024, Lawal made false statements to Messrs. Wellington Nkemadu and Gudi Johnson Daniel during their investigative duties.
