Speaker Placement Matters

A good speaker can still sound bad if itโ€™s poorly positioned.

Before you turn it up, ask: โ€œWhere is the sound actually going?โ€

๐Ÿ’ก WHY IT MATTERS

Think of a torchlight ๐Ÿ”ฆ

Where you point it is where the light goes.

Speakers work similarly. You want the useful sound directed toward the people, not the walls, ceiling, or microphones.

So remember 3 things:

1. Keep your main speakers in front of your microphones to reduce feedback. It is professionally wrong to keep your speakers behind the microphone; it causes feedback, and even if you reduce the volume, you reduce the potential of the speaker and it doesn't serve its purpose.

2. Know your speakerโ€™s coverage pattern and aim it at the listening area. The strength of a speaker is within the range of its coverage pattern. If you tilt it up, people in front will be affected and the strength will be lost to the ceiling; if you tilt it too low, people behind will be affected and the strength of the sound will be lost to the ground.

3. Avoid unnecessarily sending sound into reflective surfaces like walls and ceilings. It affects the clarity of the sound because of reflections from hard surfaces.

4. Don't use a single speaker to solve the problem of multiple speakers. Speakers have coverage limits. That coverage doesn't change regardless of how you position your speaker. It can only shift from one area to another. So use multiple speakers to cover different areas.

5. Consider the polar pattern of your microphone before you place monitor speakers. You need them to be on the side of the mic that rejects sound.

6. There's no permanent placement for a speaker. After installation, walk the room and listen for differences in vocal clarity, volume, reflections, dead areas, then adjust accordingly.

Donโ€™t Reach for the Volume K**b First

When someone says, โ€œI canโ€™t hear the vocals,โ€ or โ€œthe talking drum doesnโ€™t have enough bass,โ€ our first instinct is often to turn it up.

But more volume isnโ€™t always the solution.

Why It Matters

When two sounds are competing for the same frequency space, turning one up can simply make the competition worse.

Instead, ask:

โ€œWhat is competing with the sound I need to hear?โ€

Then create some space.

For example:
๐ŸŽค Roll off unnecessary low frequencies from vocals.
๐ŸŽน If the keyboard isnโ€™t providing the bass, reduce unnecessary low-end or have the keyboardist play a higher octave.
๐Ÿฅ If the talking drum needs more low-end clarity, check which other instruments are occupying that space before boosting its EQ.

The goal isnโ€™t to make everything bigger.

Itโ€™s to create room for the important elements to be heard.

Remember

Before you BOOST, ask what you can CUT.

Sometimes clarity comes not from adding more, but from removing what is getting in the way.

Imagine 3 people trying to speak through one microphone at the same time.

Everyone is talking, but because they're competing for the same space, it becomes difficult to clearly understand any one person.

That's similar to what happens in a mix when instruments have too much frequency overlap.

๐Ÿ’ก WHY IT MATTERS

Different instruments naturally occupy different areas of the frequency spectrum.

For example, bass and kick can compete in the low end, while vocals and keyboards/guitars can compete in the midrange.

When they compete too much, one sound can mask another, making your mix sound muddy or unclear.

Your job as the sound engineer isn't to make every instrument louder.

Your job is to help each important sound have enough space to be heard.

Sometimes that means reducing a competing frequency, changing levels, adjusting the arrangement, or using other mixing techniques.

Don't just ask, "How do I make this instrument louder?"

Ask:

> What's competing with it?"

Understanding the Frequency Spectrum

Sound is made up of different frequencies. Before you start EQing, tuning, or adjusting a sound, it helps to understand where that sound sits in the frequency spectrum.

At the most basic level, we can divide the spectrum into:

๐Ÿ”ต LOW: ~20Hz โ€“ 250Hz
๐ŸŸก MID: ~250Hz โ€“ 2kHz
๐Ÿ”ด HIGH: ~2kHz โ€“ 20kHz

These ranges aren't strict walls โ€” sounds can occupy multiple parts of the spectrum.

For example:

๐ŸŽค Voice โ€” mainly mids, but can have low and high-frequency content too.

๐ŸŽน Keyboard โ€” can cover almost the entire frequency spectrum, depending on the sound being played.

๐ŸŽธ Bass Guitar โ€” mainly low frequencies, with some mid/high content that helps you hear the character of the instrument.

๐Ÿฅ Kick Drum โ€” mostly low frequencies, with some higher frequencies that help define the attack.

๐Ÿ’ก WHY IT MATTERS

If you don't understand where different sounds sit in the frequency spectrum, you may end up EQing blindly.

You might hear that something doesn't sound right and simply start turning k***s.

But when you understand frequencies, you can begin to ask better questions:

> Is there too much low-end?
> Is the midrange crowded?
> Is there enough high-frequency detail?

Good sound isn't just about turning things up or down.

It's about understanding what you're hearing.

Don't EQ what you don't understand.

Before you start adjusting frequencies, first learn to identify where the sound lives.
