‘EARLY PREPARATION IS KEY’ - ODUBOLA CHARGES 3SC AHEAD OF AFRICAN CAMPAIGN
Former Nigeria international and ex-Shooting Stars coach, Babatunde Odubola, popularly known in football circles as “Zico,” has congratulated Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) on their historic qualification for the CAF Confederation Cup, describing the achievement as a reward for perseverance, vision, and collective commitment.
Odubola, a former player of Femo Scorpions, Julius Berger, and Shooting Stars, expressed delight that the Oluyole Warriors have finally secured a return to continental football after a 27-year absence. According to him, the qualification marks a significant milestone not only for the club but also for Oyo State and the countless supporters who have remained loyal through the years.
The respected football administrator and tactician reserved special praise for Oyo State Governor, Engineer Seyi Abiodun Makinde, whose unwavering support and investment in sports have continued to yield positive results. He noted that the government’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for sports development has played a vital role in the club’s resurgence and eventual qualification for African competition.
Odubola also commended the leadership of Hon. Taiwo Lekan-Salami, the club’s management team, technical crew, and players for their dedication throughout the season. He acknowledged that despite the numerous challenges facing Nigerian football, the team remained focused on its objectives and ultimately delivered a result that has restored pride and excitement among football lovers in the state.
While celebrating the achievement, the current Sports Manager of Ilaji FC stressed that the hard work must begin immediately if Shooting Stars are to make a meaningful impact on the continental stage. He advised the club’s leadership to commence early preparations, particularly in the areas of player recruitment, squad strengthening, logistics, and technical planning.
According to him, competing in Africa requires a different level of preparation and investment, as clubs will be facing experienced opponents from across the continent. He urged the management to identify quality additions capable of complementing the existing squad while ensuring stability within the team.
Odubola further called on the Oyo State Government, corporate organizations, and other stakeholders to increase their support for the club, noting that continental participation presents an opportunity to showcase the rich football heritage of Ibadan and Oyo State to the rest of Africa.
“This qualification is a moment of celebration, but it should also serve as a motivation to aim higher. Shooting Stars belong among Africa’s best clubs, and with proper planning, strategic investment, and continued support from government and stakeholders, the team can proudly represent Nigeria and make the state proud on the continental stage,” he stated.
