SITA DELIVERS INDUSTRY-LEADING CYBERSECURITY IN PARTNERSHIP WITH PALO ALTO NETWORKS

SITA, the global leader in air transport technology, has reached a significant agreement to partner with Palo Alto Networks, the global cybersecurity leader, to deliver comprehensive cybersecurity protection for mission-critical airports applications.

This partnership marks a key milestone with the addition of Palo Alto Networks’ AI-powered cybersecurity platforms into SITA’s CyberSecurity portfolio.

SITA will provide the management and operation from its CyberSOC. The solution will safeguard access from remote sites, mobile workforce and airport assets such as check-in workstations, self-service kiosks, tablets, smartphones and baggage scanners, enabling smooth passenger flows whilst also avoiding downtimes and reducing turnaround times where efficiency of operations is a key priority.

The partnership will focus on delivering advanced cybersecurity solutions (including Palo Alto Networks Next Generation Firewalls (NGFW), Prisma SD-WAN Instant-On Network (ION) Devices, and Palo Alto Networks Prisma Access) to provide comprehensive network security, connectivity and cloud-based protection, all managed by SITA.

Martin Smillie, SITA Senior Vice President for Communications and Data Exchange (CDE) said: “The need to protect vital digital applications within the transportation industry has never been more acute, given the ever-evolving threat from cyber-attacks. This agreement delivers industry-leading cybersecurity protection for our airport, airline and other customers, in mission critical areas of their operation. Managed by SITA CyberSOC, this combines Palo Alto Networks best-in-class AI-powered, cloud native Endpoint and Application protection, all optimised and future-proofed to combat cyber threats.”

This partnership will begin a transformation of cybersecurity in the air transport industry, helping ensure that critical systems are protected with the most advanced cybersecurity platforms available (platformization) – fostering a safer and more efficient environment for air travel worldwide.”

Palo Alto Networks will help provide the current and next generation of cybersecurity protection and software for SITA Secure Service Edge at mission-critical areas of aviation and other areas of transport.

SOUTH AFRICAN TOURISM ON TRACK ON BUDGET SPEND AND PERFORMANCE

South African Tourism (SA Tourism)’s legislative mandate is to promote South Africa as a world-class destination through transparent leadership, responsible governance, and strategic marketing initiatives.

Tourism is a key driver of South Africa’s economy, and our role is to ensure the sector remains vibrant and continues to grow and attract both domestic and international travellers. The success of our marketing strategy manifests itself in our performance.

SA Tourism welcomes President Cyril Ramaphosa’s reaffirmation of the vital role the tourism sector plays in driving inclusive economic growth, job creation, and sustainable development.

In his latest letter to the nation, the President highlighted South Africa’s unmatched natural beauty, vibrant cultural heritage, and world-class infrastructure, which have positioned the country as a premier tourism destination.

The country’s tourism sector continues to show strong recovery and growth. Between January and October 2024, South Africa welcomed 7.2 million visitors – an impressive 5.7% increase compared to the same period last year.

Early indicators from the recent festive season suggest strong sector performance, with high occupancy rates and strong participation in events across the country.

In the business events space, SA Tourism has so far secured fifty-three bids for international events in the 2024/25 financial year (1 April 2024 to 31 March 2025). These events are expected to generate R616-million for the economy and attract over 24,000 delegates between 2024 and 2029, further cementing South Africa’s position as a premier destination for global conferences and events.

SA Tourism remains steadfast in its commitment to good governance and ethical practices. The filling of critical vacant positions within the organisation is ongoing. The newly appointed Chief Operations Officer assumed office on 7 January 2025. The recruitment process for Chief Financial Officer and Chief Internal Auditor is underway.

SA Tourism is actively promoting South Africa in key markets, with resolute teams driving campaigns domestically and internationally.

The process to appoint a global marketing agency in compliance with National Treasury regulations is ongoing. SA Tourism is committed to upholding the integrity of all procurement processes. An independent forensic investigation into a strategic events tender was initiated in December 2024 and is currently underway.

“As previously corrected in the statement issued on the16th of December 2024, no bidder has been awarded a R100 million event management tender. The current SA Tourism management and leadership team is committed to interrogating costs. As such, even inaccurate information about a non-existent 80% surplus will not coerce us into spending recklessly. Our organisational performance at the end of December 2024, was at an all-time high of 92% with 72% of our budget already spent demonstrating commitment to budget optimization,” says Chief Executive Officer of South African Tourism, Nombulelo Guliwe.

SA Tourism’s goal is building confidence in South Africa as an attractive global destination. SA Tourism remains focused on driving sustainable growth in the sector and we are unwavering in our commitment to showcasing our country’s unparalleled beauty including our rich cultural and natural heritage to the world, while driving inclusive economic growth, and contributing to the reduction of unemployment.

United Announces Accelerated Timeline for Starlink’s Industry

United Airlines has announced an accelerated timeline to bring Starlink, the world’s fastest, most reliable connectivity in the sky to United travelers around the world.

The airline now expects to begin testing Starlink next month with the first commercial flight anticipated to take off this spring on a United Embraer E-175 aircraft.

United now plans to outfit its entire two-cabin regional fleet by the end of this year and have its first mainline Starlink-enabled plane in the air before the end of this year.

Access will be free for all MileagePlus customers and includes game-changing inflight entertainment experiences like streaming services, shopping, gaming and more. Membership to MileagePlus is also free and people can sign-up now at united.com/starlink.

“We have a lot planned for our MileagePlus members this year and adding Starlink to as many planes as we can as quickly as we can is at the center of it all,” said Richard Nunn, CEO of United MileagePlus. “It’s not only going to revolutionize the experience of flying United, but it’s also going to unlock tons of new partnerships and benefits for our members that otherwise wouldn’t be possible.”

Last September, United signed the industry’s largest agreement of its kind with SpaceX to bring Starlink to its entire fleet. And starting in a few months, the airline’s customers will enjoy the same high-speed, low-latency internet service in the air that they enjoy on the ground. This gate-to-gate connectivity will enable experiences in the sky at scale that no other major U.S. airline provides, on seatback screens and personal devices simultaneously.

Inaugural European Tourism Seasonality Summit To Tackle Seasonality Challenges Head On

The inaugural European Tourism Seasonality Summit, set to take place on April 7 in Seville, will bring together industry leaders to address the challenges posed by seasonality in European tourism.

The travel and tourism industry is poised to contribute more than $16 trillion to Europe’s GDP and support more than 449 million jobs by 2034, according to the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC).

However, the rise in demand for sustainable tourism practices has sparked a push to mitigate the negative impacts of high-season travel on local communities while promoting off- and shoulder-season opportunities.

The European Tourism Seasonality Summit, held in partnership between Routes and Low Season Traveller, will unite experts from the travel, leisure, destination, technology, and hospitality sectors to develop strategies for responsible growth by reshaping the seasonality curve.

Topics that will be examined include: How European destinations navigate tourism seasonality, post-pandemic shifts in traveller behaviour, and the push for sustainability.

How technology, big data, and AI are reshaping travel patterns and supporting low-season tourism across Europe.

The targeted marketing campaigns and innovative strategies which can change traveller perceptions of low seasons.

Ged Brown, CEO & Founder of Low Season Traveller, said “After the successful launch of our first Tourism Seasonality Summit in Bahrain last year, we are delighted to be bringing the event to Seville and Europe given the incredible seasonality challenges faced within the region. The event will see leaders from throughout Europe’s travel and tourism sector, meet up to share experiences, learn effective strategies and engage in true collaboration with each other to alleviate peak seasonality challenges.”

Brown added: “We listened to the feedback from our delegates in Bahrain and making this a standalone event but alongside Routes Europe, will ensure that there is now an even greater opportunity for all parties to participate in the event.”

Steven Small, director of Routes, said: “Seasonality significantly shapes European tourism, influencing its dynamics and opportunities. While seasonality poses significant challenges for European tourism, it also opens doors for innovation, sustainability, and enhanced experiences for tourists and local communities alike. The inaugural European edition of the Tourism Seasonality Summit will bring together industry leaders to outline strategies to flatten the curve, ensuring that the positive impact of tourism can be felt sustainably all-year round.”

Small added: “With Routes Europe 2025 taking place the day after the Tourism Seasonality Summit, this is a fantastic opportunity for both the route development community and wider stakeholders impacted by seasonality to drive positive change.”

The European Tourism Seasonality Summit will take place on April 7, 2025, at the Fibes Conference and Exhibition Centre in Seville, Spain.
