Chapter 1
“Chioma! Chioma! Where are you? We are already late! The prince is about to choose a wife!”
“I can’t go, Amaka,” Chioma replied in a low voice. “You know my stepmother will never allow me. If she and her children return from the market and don’t see me… I’ll be in serious trouble.”
“Chioma, please,” Amaka said quickly. “You can cover your face. Everyone is going to the palace. Even your stepsister is getting ready because of the prince.”
“I said I’m not going,” Chioma answered softly but firmly. “I still have so much work to finish. Please, just go.”
Amaka sighed sadly.
“They are destroying your future. First they stopped your education… now they won’t even let you enjoy life. This is not fair at all.”
“Amaka, please,” Chioma said gently. “Just go. I’ll be fine.”
Amaka looked at her with pity, then slowly walked away.
My name is Chioma… the most beautiful girl in Adama village.
My father was once a strong and respected hunter. He earned well, and we lived happily.
But everything changed when my mother passed away after giving birth to me.
My father tried his best to stay strong, but life became harder. Not long after, he remarried.
That was when my suffering began.
From that moment, peace left my life.
My stepmother turned everything into pain. My once bright skin became dull. My hair began to fall out. I became weaker and thinner as the days passed.
I was treated like I didn’t exist.
I had three stepsisters and two stepbrothers. None of them cared about me. I was seen as nothing more than a servant in my own father’s house.
And my father…
He never noticed.
He was always too busy to see my pain.
That evening, after finishing all the house chores, I was completely exhausted.
Without realizing it… I fell asleep.
I forgot to cook dinner.
“Where is that useless girl?! Chioma! Chioma!”
“Mum, I’m hungry! She didn’t cook anything!”
“Mum! Juliet, China, Lucy, Lucky, David! Come and see this!”
“Bring water for me!”
I woke up suddenly, frightened.
“Good afternoon, m—”
“Keep quiet!” my stepmother shouted. “Who told you to sleep? Have you finished your work? Who gave you permission?!”
“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to—”
“You useless girl!” she yelled and slapped me hard. “I will make sure your life becomes miserable! You will not eat for four days… and you will not drink water!”
Tears filled my eyes as I stood there shaking.
That was my life.
