Sweeps Wards: Grassroots Might and Major Decisions at the 2026 APC Presidential Primary

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) successfully conducted its highly anticipated presidential primary election yesterday, utilizing a direct primary mode across all 8,809 wards nationwide. This decentralized approach allowed all registered members of the party to cast their votes directly at the grassroots level, ensuring massive participation and testing the party’s local mobilization strength.

Incumbent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu secured a commanding, sweeping victory across several states, heavily defeating his sole challenger, Edo businessman Stanley Osifo. In states like Zamfara and Rivers, Tinubu garnered hundreds of thousands of votes against Osifo's minimal margins, effectively cementing his position for a re-election ticket ahead of the 2027 general elections.

President Tinubu, who voted alongside First Lady Oluremi Tinubu at his Ikoyi-Obalende ward in Lagos State, praised the peaceful nature of the exercise and described it as a true demonstration of internal democracy. He commended the party's governors, electoral committees, and security agencies for maintaining an orderly environment that allowed ordinary party members to actively drive the democratic process.

The direct primary was officially overseen by the party's newly appointed Presidential Primary Election Committee, led by former Senate President Senator Pius Anyim as chairman. The committee worked alongside designated state coordinators to ensure that the voting and subsequent collation at the local government levels complied with the guidelines submitted to the electoral umpire.

Following the conclusion of yesterday's ward-level voting, the APC National Secretariat has scheduled the official national collation and final declaration of results for today at the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja. Accredited party stakeholders, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officials, and international observers are currently converging on the venue to witness the formal announcement of the winner.
