I’ve lost weight since taking over from Ambode” – Babajide Sanwo-Olu

Newly sworn-in Lagos State governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has said he has started losing weight due to the enormous and pressing demands of the State.

He made this known as he spoke to State House correspondents in Abuja on Friday.

“I dare say that I have lost weight and probably I will lose a little bit more but I think it’s what the job entails and is to also ensure that you have the right team of people that would also support you”.

Sanwo-Olu, who took over from former governor Ambode said,

“the challenges (of Lagos State) are real, they are there, it’s not a tea party. You don’t sleep and wake up and the traffic has gone down, you don’t sleep and wake up and there is no rain and that you’ve resolved Apapa gridlock, it’s real.”

He added that leading Lagos State requires psychological support,

“So when as a leader, you show that leadership support, then the message itself will trickle down and trickle down very well and that is why we have to take that very bold idea and you’re going to see a lot,” Sanwo-Olu said

Poll: Presidential tribunal resumes hearing of Atiku, PDP’s petition Monday

The Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal will on Monday resume sitting on the petition filed by the Peoples Democratic Party and its candidate in February 23 presidential election, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, Saturday PUNCH learnt on Friday.

Meanwhile, there were indications on Friday that the President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa, had appointed another judge appointed as her replacement on the five-man panel to hear the case.

Justice Bulkachuwa withdrew as a member and head of the five-man panel on May 22, following the allegation of the likelihood of bias levelled against her by the PDP and Atiku.

The tribunal was said to have issued and served the notice for the Monday’s hearing on all parties to the petition on Friday.

The leader of the legal team of the PDP and Atiku, Dr Livy Uzoukwu (SAN), confirmed the development to Saturday PUNCH on Friday.

“We were served the notice today that the court will resume hearing on Monday,” he said.

Asked if he was sure that Justice Bulkachuwa’s replacement on the panel had been named, Uzoukwu said, “It is the presumption that we arrived at when we received the hearing notice on Friday. But we do not have any information about it.”

The development came barely a week after Atiku and his party wrote to Bulkachuwa, reminding her of her promise to appoint her replacement on the panel to enable the hearing of their petition to resume.

They said in their letter sent to Bulkachuwa on May 31 that they were already running against time due to the “strict requirement of keeping to the constitutional calendar for a petition”.

Missing sales agent found, unable to talk

Oluwakemi Soyebo, a sales agent in the Agbara area of Ogun State, has been found three days after she went missing.

It was learnt that the 22-year-old woman appeared around 6pm on Thursday to the excitement of her family and neighbours.

The family is, however, in fear because she has not talked since she was found.

Soyebo disappeared on Monday, June 3, 2019, after she left office at the close of work that day.

Her elder brother, Sulyman, who spoke to City Round on the phone on Friday, said she was dropped off by a taxi driver around MTN bus stop on the Badagry Expressway – some distance away from their house.

Sulyman explained that Soyebo was very weak at the time she appeared and could not talk, adding that they had yet to know the circumstances surrounding the incident.

He said Soyebo had been admitted in an undisclosed hospital for treatment.

He said, “Yesterday (Thursday), around 6pm while everybody was still searching for her, she walked into the street. We learnt that she was dropped off by a taxi and that the driver zoomed off. Residents who saw her at that point were overjoyed and did not pay attention to the taxi.

“When she got home, she was given water because she had lost strength. She started vomiting and was rushed to the hospital. She has not been able to speak up till now. Series of tests have been carried out on her. I think it was a case of kidnapping. She is conscious now but she has not spoken. My mother was crying uncontrollably. She was happy. She could not eat or sleep throughout the days she (Soyebo) was missing.”

Pastors, imams to get approval before preaching in Kaduna

The Kaduna State House of Assembly on Friday passed the Religious Preaching Regulation bill into law.

The new Religious Preaching Regulation law substitutes similar law of 1984 in the state.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the Executive Bill, brought to the Assembly in 2016, was passed hours before the eighth Assembly was dissolved on Friday.

The bill had been with the assembly three years and had been opposed by Muslim and Christian bodies as well as individuals across the state.

The state government had in 2016 argued the bill was meant to regulate religious preaching in order to promote religious harmony and peaceful coexistence not to stipple religious freedom.

The Speaker of the Assembly, Alhaji Aminu Shagali, presided over the sitting during which the bill was passed after it was read clause by clause.

It provides for the establishment of an Interfaith Regulatory Council at the state level and committees at local government levels responsible for screening and issuing licence to preachers.

The councils will have two representatives each of Christian and Islamic bodies among other members.

According to the speaker, the new law has mandated the council to hear and determine appeals to be brought before it arising from the decision of the local government interfaith committees.

The Council also has power to issue regulations considered necessary to guide the local government interfaith committees in the performance of their functions as provided under the bill, if signed into law.

“The bill when signed into law, stipulates that in each of the 23 local Government areas of the state, a committee to be known as the Local Government Interfaith Committee has to be established.

AIT Goes Back On Air, 24 Hours After Suspension By Broadcasting Regulators

24 hours after the National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) suspended its licence over alleged violation of the regulatory body’s rule, the African Independent Television (AIT) is back on air.

The development comes after Justice Inyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja nullified the suspension of operating license of Daar Communications PLC, operator of AIT and Ray Power.

Ekwo, while delivering the order, gave the federal government and NBC till May 30, 2019 to revert the ban on Daar Communications PLC.

HUMAN CAPACITY DEVELOPMENT: NAF TRAINS K-9 UNIT FOR SPECIAL OPERATIONS

Twenty personnel and 20 dogs of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Canine (K-9) Unit are currently undergoing advanced training in South Africa to enhance their capacity in the areas of Explosives Ordinance Detection (EOD), Narcotics Detection and Special Operations. The Special Operations training covers tracking, rappelling, waterman-ship and other special terrain training aimed at equipping members of the Unit with requisite skills to operate with NAF Special Forces (SF) personnel in Combat Search and Rescue (CSAR) situations where they would be required to rescue downed aircrew, especially in denied environments. The special operations dogs would also be employed to support emergency responders in times of disasters to locate survivors.

At the end of the training, some of the personnel would be deployed as instructors at the newly established Air Police Training Centre (APTC) Kerang, Plateau State. The APTC’s location in Kerang is expected to enhance coordination of CSAR activities and training with the 205 CSAR Group, which is also based in Kerang.

The NAF K-9 Unit was established in 2016 by the incumbent Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar. Under his leadership the Unit has grown steadily over the last 4 years to a total of 39 well-trained dogs deployed at major Nigerian Airports, NAF Units and Theatres of Operation across the Country.
