It is crystal that Sporting Lagos have gained promotion back to the Nigeria Premier Football League in dramatic style on Thursday, grinding out a 1-0 victory away at Osun United to finish as champions of the NNL Southern Conference A.

Striker Alex Leme was the hero of the day, rising highest to nod home a pinpoint cross in the 17th minute. That lone goal proved decisive, sealing three priceless points and sparking celebrations that stretched from Osogbo back to the streets of Lagos.

The win took Sporting Lagos to 33 points, enough to hold off a strong challenge from second-placed Akwa United, who failed to keep the promise. The Uyo-based outfit also ended their campaign with victory over Solution FC, but it wasn’t enough to book their spot in the NPFL.

With promotion secured, Sporting Lagos will now join Inter Lagos, who also topped their NNL grouping, in the top flight next season. They become the third Lagos club in the NPFL, lining up alongside Ikorodu United, who have steadily built their reputation in the league over several seasons.

Meanwhile, Doma United of Gombe State had earlier booked their spot in the NPFL, while sports enthusiasts await the fourth team from Northern Conference D. Will it be Ranchers Bees, who are currently topping the table with 20 points, or Jigawa United, who are trailing closely with 18 points? Both teams play away in their last match as the Super 4 Draws is scheduled for 24th April this year.

For Lagos football, it is a statement moment. Three clubs from Nigeria’s commercial capital will now battle in the nation’s elite division, a resurgence that underlines the city’s growing influence on the domestic game.

From the NNL grind to the NPFL spotlight, Sporting Lagos are back.

*NSC Restates Commitment to Favour Ofili, Urges Her Return to National Team*

The National Sports Commission (NSC) has restated its commitment to Nigerian sprint sensation, Favour Ofili, following the decision by World Athletics to deny her request for a transfer of allegiance.

Responding to press questions, the Director General of the NSC, Hon. Bukola Olopade, emphasized that Nigeria remains fully supportive of Ofili and is eager to welcome her back into the Nigeria national team fold.

“She’s our daughter. We love her so much and I’ve always said we must speak to her to come home. I am urging Ofili and those close to her that home is waiting for her.”

“Don’t be dejected or angry. Know that we love you and we still want you back. We promise you all the support that you require to shine at the Olympics in two years’ time,” Hon. Olopade added.

The NSC recognizes the complexities athletes face in making career decisions and reiterates its commitment to fostering a supportive and enabling environment where talents like Ofili can excel at the highest level.

The Commission further underscored the importance of sustained collaboration with sports federations and key stakeholders to ensure that Nigerian athletes receive the resources, welfare, and institutional backing needed to succeed on the global stage.

The Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) on Thursday handed match suspensions to two players following a violent altercation after Wednesday’s Premiership fixture between Ekiti Queens and Pacesetter Queens in Ado Ekiti.

The Matchday 15 encounter, played on April 15, 2026, at the Oluyemi Kayode Stadium, ended 2-0 in favour of the home side, Ekiti Queens, but was overshadowed by controversy after Teslimot Balogun of Pacesetter Queens and Busari Suliyat of Ekiti Queens were involved in a post-match clash that triggered chaos.

According to official reports from match officials, the incident occurred immediately after the final whistle, with both players engaging in conduct deemed violent and unsporting.

Following a review of the referee’s report, the match commissioner’s findings, and video footage, the NWFL ruled that the actions of both players brought the game into disrepute.

Consequently, the NWFL imposed a two-match ban on each player, effective immediately from Matchday 16.
