Nigeria’s agricultural import bill soared to N 2.2tn in the first half of 2025, drawing strong criticism from farmers, rice millers, and stakeholders who argue that the Federal Government’s policies are undermining local production and worsening food insecurity.

The stakeholders also criticised the recent order by President Bola Tinubu to reduce food prices. On September 11, 2025, it was reported that Tinubu ordered a Federal Executive Council committee to further crash the prices of food items across the country.

The Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Sabi Abdullahi, stated this in Abuja, while presenting a paper at a one-day capacity-building workshop for journalists covering the Senate. He said the President’s order would be enforced to further crash prices of food items by ensuring the safe passage of products through various routes across the country.

But this Presidential directive has sparked criticism from farmers and rice millers, who argue that mere pronouncements cannot override market forces or compensate for poor planning.

Brazil head coach, Carlo Ancelotti, has claimed that Endrick’s progression at Real Madrid has been stalled by the presence of Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo Goes in the team.

Ancelotti did not call Endrick up for the final rounds of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers despite resting a couple of key players.

The 19-year-old was last picked in March, as he fights for regular playing time at Madrid.

Last season, Endrick started only three LaLiga fixtures, when Ancelotti was still manager of Los Blancos.

Nigerian celebrity chef Hilda Baci has secured yet another historic milestone as Guinness World Records, GWR, has officially recognised her for preparing the largest serving of Nigerian-style jollof rice.

In a post shared on its official X account, Guinness World Records announced:

β€œNew record: Largest serving of Nigerian-style jollof rice – 8,780 kg (19,356 lb 9 oz) achieved by Hilda Baci and Gino in Victoria Island, Lagos, Nigeria.” They wrote.

The achievement came after a grand culinary spectacle held on September 12, 2025, at the Eko Hotels and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos.

The event, tagged the β€˜Gino World Jollof Festival’ with Hilda Baci, drew thousands of attendees and generated massive social media buzz.

A United Nations commission of inquiry says Israel has committed genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.

A new report says there are reasonable grounds to conclude that four of the five genocidal acts defined under international law have been carried out since the start of the war with Hamas in 2023: killing members of a group, causing them serious bodily and mental harm, deliberately inflicting conditions calculated to destroy the group, and preventing births.

It cites statements by Israeli leaders, and the pattern of conduct by Israeli forces, as evidence of genocidal intent.

Israel’s foreign ministry said it categorically rejected the report, denouncing it as β€œdistorted and false”.

It accused the three experts on the commission of serving as β€œHamas proxies” and relying β€œentirely on Hamas falsehoods, laundered and repeated by others” that had β€œalready been thoroughly debunked”.

Nigerians have continued to voice their frustration over the persistent poor state of electricity supply across the country, describing the situation as both unacceptable and detrimental to national development.

Many have insisted that a comprehensive restructuring of the power sector is not only necessary but long overdue.

In an interview with Stephen Bello, several concerned citizens who bared their minds did not mince words, openly criticizing what they described as decades of mismanagement, corruption, and inefficiency within the sector.

The consecutive decline in Nigeria’s headline inflation for the fifth time has intensified calls for the Central Bank of Nigeria to cut interest rates.

Nigeria’s inflation rate dropped to 21.12 per cent in August 2025. The latest drop represents a 1.79 per cent decrease compared to the N21.88 per cent recorded in July 2025, National Bureau of Statistics data showed.

On a year-on-year basis, the country’s inflation lowered by 12.03 per cent when compared with 32.15 per cent in August last year, indicating the cooling of prices, though technically attributed to the CPI rebase in the earlier part of 2025.

In the same vein, food inflation dropped significantly in August, NBS said.

According to the NBS, the slowdown in prices of imported rice, local rice, millet, semolina, flour, maize and others pushed food inflation to 21.87 per cent, a slight decrease from 21.88 per cent in July.
