Edo at 35: Akoko-Edo Council Boss Hails Gov. Okpebholo, Says A Better Edo Is Possible

The Executive Chairman of Akoko-Edo Local Government Council, Rt. Hon. Alabi Bliss Oshionogue, has hailed the Governor of Edo State, His Excellency, Distinguished Senator Monday Okpebholo, on the occasion of Edo State's 35th Anniversary.

The Council Chairman commended the Governor's developmental strides, describing his interventions in security, infrastructure, and social development programmes as top-notch and impactful.

Rt. Hon. Oshionogue called on all well-meaning Edo sons and daughters, both at home and in the diaspora, to join hands and support the administration of Governor Okpebholo for a more developed and prosperous Edo.

He also called for peace and unity irrespective of political affiliation, noting that Edo belongs to all of us and as such, we must place the interest of the state above personal interests.

In his statement, the Council Chairman also expressed appreciation to the Governor and the people of Akoko-Edo for the opportunity to serve at the local level.

"Let me appreciate my Boss and amiable leader, His Excellency, Distinguished Senator Monday Okpebholo, and the good people of Akoko-Edo for giving me the opportunity to serve as Council Chairman and to make my own modest impact as the state marks 35 years. I hope the incoming administration will continue from where we have stopped as we wind down. Congratulations to His Excellency and congratulations to the people of Edo State," he stated.

Akoko-Edo Traditional Council Pays Courtesy and Congratulatory Visit to Edo Speaker, Rt. Hon. (Prince) Yekini Idaiye

The Akoko-Edo Traditional Council has paid a courtesy and congratulatory visit to the Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. (Prince) Yekini Idaiye following his emergence as Speaker.

The traditional rulers, led by HRH Oba Idoju III, JP, OON, the Olokpe of Okpe, congratulated the Speaker and expressed their appreciation to the Governor of Edo State and the Honourable Members of the Edo State House of Assembly for finding their son worthy of leading the House.

Other traditional rulers on the delegation included HRH Oba Alh. Sule Idaiye, the Imah of Somorika; HRH Oba E. A. Saiki II, JP, the Otaru of Igarra; HRH Oba Victor O. Ekun, the Olososo of Ososo; and HRH Oba D. S. Lawani, the Olojah of Ojah.

During the visit, HRH Oba D. S. Lawani, the Olojah of Ojah, offered prayers for the Speaker, the Edo State House of Assembly and the entire Edo State, asking for divine guidance, wisdom and peace in the affairs of the state.

Responding on behalf of the House, the Majority Leader, Hon. (Chief) Sunny Ojiezele, thanked the traditional rulers for the visit and congratulatory gesture. He assured them that their son was already making them proud and would continue to uphold the confidence reposed in him.

The Speaker, Rt. Hon. (Prince) Yekini Idaiye, also expressed his appreciation to the traditional rulers for the visit, prayers and support. He assured them that he would remain committed to his responsibilities and would not let the people of Akoko-Edo, the Edo State House of Assembly or the entire state down.

The Founder and National Leader of Women Our Voice Our Votes (WOVOV), Dr. Mary Mena Akpoguma Okoimose, has felicitated with Muslims across Nigeria on the occasion of Mawlid an-Nabi, commemorating the birth of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

In her goodwill message, Dr. Okoimose described Mawlid an-Nabi as a significant moment for Muslims to reflect on the life, teachings, and enduring legacy of Prophet Muhammad, particularly his virtues of compassion, humility, patience, justice, kindness, and peaceful coexistence.

EID-UL-MAWLID: AKOKO-EDO COUNCIL CHAIRMAN URGES MUSLIMS TO EMULATE HUMILITY OF PROPHET MUHAMMAD

The Executive Chairman of Akoko-Edo Local Government Council, Rt. Hon. Alabi Bliss Oshionogue, has congratulated Muslim faithful in Akoko-Edo and beyond as they mark Eid-ul-Mawlid, the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him).

In his goodwill message, the Council Chairman urged Muslims to reflect on the enduring values of compassion, humility, and selfless service exemplified by the Holy Prophet.

In his words: "We must reflect on the qualities of the Holy Prophet Muhammad as a Local Government. Let love lead amongst our people for the development and peace needed in Akoko-Edo and beyond. We must learn to tolerate one another irrespective of our religious beliefs. With tolerance, compassion and humility towards others, we will achieve more as a Local Government instead of being divided amongst ourselves."

Hon. Oshionogue further called on the Muslim faithful to use the occasion to pray for peace, unity and sustainable development in Akoko-Edo.

"I urge the Muslim faithful to pray for peace and development as they mark the birth of Prophet Muhammad. We shall continue to play our part as a government to ensure a prosperous Akoko-Edo," he stated.

Governor Okpebholo signs Edo Assembly funds management, judiciary autonomy bills into law

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo has signed the Edo House of Assembly Funds Management Bill 2023 and the State Judiciary Financial Autonomy 2023 Amendment Bill into law.

The governor signed the bills on Monday at Government House, Benin City, while receiving the Speaker of the Edo House of Assembly, Prince Yekini Idiaye.

He commended the lawmakers for the swift passage of the legislation, saying he was pleased that the issue had been resolved.

“I am indeed delighted because this has become like a controversial law, I must confess to you,” Okpebholo said.

He said the three arms of government — the executive, legislature and judiciary — had distinct responsibilities and should operate within their constitutional mandates.

According to him, the executive is responsible for administration and implementation, while the legislature makes laws and performs oversight functions and the judiciary interprets laws and punishes offenders.

“For me, deviating from these is totally out of the field of play, changing the goal post. I saw danger in it and the way things were going,” the governor said.

Okpebholo said he was concerned that funds meant for capital projects were no longer reaching the people, adding that such projects were the most visible way government could improve the lives of residents.

He commended the lawmakers for what he described as standing by the people, saying their action demonstrated their commitment to the development of Edo State.

Earlier, Idiaye said the legislation did not remove the financial autonomy of the House of Assembly or the judiciary.

He explained that recurrent expenditure would continue to go to the Assembly and judiciary, while the amendment addressed the management of capital funds.

“It is the capital part of the funds that has issues. It was badly abused,” the speaker said.

Idiaye said the governor’s position was aimed at preventing further abuse of capital funds by ensuring that the executive handles the capital component through the appropriation process.

He said the Assembly and judiciary would submit proposals to the executive for approval before accessing funds for capital projects.

“The autonomy is still in place, there is no fear on any side, and the unions should not have any fear,” Idiaye said, adding that workers’ salaries were not affected by the amendment.

“I believe they have not been properly briefed, but the autonomy is still in order and the workers' salaries are not touched,” he said.
