Nigeria’s President, Bola Tinubu has said that history would not have been completed carefully and richly, if he had failed in the 2023 presidential election.

Tinubu made the statement on Sunday, July 20 during the 8th-day Fidau prayers held in honour of the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona.
The revered monarch, who died at the age of 91, was one of Nigeria’s longest-serving traditional rulers, having ascended the throne on April 2, 1960.
He passed away just hours after the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, with whom he shared a longstanding friendship dating back to the 1980s.
Speaking at the prayer gathering, President Tinubu revealed that the late Awujale had encouraged him to contest the 2023 presidential election and assured him of victory.
“Our history would not have been completed carefully and richly if I had failed in the last election,” Tinubu said.
“I was successful because of your support and the blessing of the late Awujale,” he added.

A 60-year old Ondo man, Tola Lebi, has pleaded guilty to the r3pe of a 12-year old girl, who is a friend of his daughter, rather than face trial.

In court, Lebi admitted to repeatedly assaulting the victim, stating that he was unsure of what overcame him during the incident.

He was initially brought before an Akure Magistrates’ Court by the Ondo State Security Network Agency, known as the ‘Amotekun Corps,’ for the alleged r3pe.
According to prosecuting counsel O.F. Akeredolu, the offences occurred between July 7 and July 10, 2025, at his residence on Ikoya Road, along Holy Trinity Street in Okitipupa, Ondo State.
Akeredolu informed the court that Lebi intentionally penetrated the victim without her consent over three days.
The offence, according to the prosecutor, contravened Section 6 and is punishable under Section 358 of the Criminal Code Law, Cap 37, Vol. 1, Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006.
Chief Magistrate Damilola Sekoni adjourned the case until August 1 for sentencing and ordered that Lebi be remanded in Amotekun custody.

Dumebi Kachikwu, the 2023 presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has claimed that former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi is already considering exiting the ADC-led coalition.

Earlier in July, Obi joined forces with other opposition figures under the banner of the ADC in a move to build a stronger coalition aimed at challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Two days after the coalition was launched, Obi publicly declared his intention to run for president in 2027—while still retaining his membership in the Labour Party. This sparked speculation about his political future and allegiance.
Kachikwu, speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, alleged that Obi has now realized that the coalition was never intended to be neutral or inclusive. According to him, the entire ADC coalition structure is being repurposed to serve the presidential ambition of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
Kachikwu, who has consistently accused opposition figures of hijacking his party, insisted that he will not allow the ADC to be used as a political vehicle for Atiku. He further warned that the 2027 election must not be reduced to a contest between the political elite at the expense of ordinary Nigerians.


“This coming election will not be about class exploitation. We will resist it. Nigerians must be informed, empowered, and educated about their political power,” he said.
The growing tension within the ADC-led coalition raises questions about its future and whether it can truly serve as a unified platform for opposition candidates in 2027.

The Katsina State Governor, Malam Dikko Umaru Radda was involved in a road accident while travelling from Daura to the state capital.

The accident occurred along the Daura-Katsina Road on Sunday evening, July 20, 2025.

The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Ibrahim Kaula Mohammed, who confirmed the development in a statement said the accident was minor and the governor’s condition was stable.

“Katsina State Governor Malam Dikko Umaru Radda was involved in a minor road accident this evening along the Daura – Katsina Road, while carrying out his official duties in service to the people of Katsina State," the statement read.

“We are pleased to confirm that the Governor is in good health and stable condition, with no serious injuries sustained.

“As a precautionary measure, the Governor is currently receiving routine medical evaluation at a medical facility, where he is being attended to by qualified medical professionals.

“Governor Radda remains in high spirits and expresses his gratitude to Almighty Allah for His protection, as well as Katsina citizens and well-wishers for their prayers and concern."

The Ministry of Education has dismissed claims circulating online about the cancellation of the 2025 West African Examinations Council (WAEC) examinations.

In a press release on Sunday, July 20, the ministry labeled the statement as “false and misleading,” urging the public to disregard it.

A statement had circulated online, presented as an “urgent notice” from the federal ministry of education and purportedly signed by a “Dr. Aisha Lawal”. The statement alleged that the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) had been cancelled nationwide due to widespread examination malpractice, including extensive question leakages occurring up to 72 hours before scheduled papers.

However in a statement released this evening, the education ministry dismissed the report stating that the 2025 WAEC examinations have been “successfully concluded” with only a few isolated incidents of malpractice that were promptly addressed.
It also stated that the ongoing National Examinations Council (NECO) examinations are progressing smoothly, with no reported cases of malpractice as of the time of the release.

“The federal ministry of education has not received any official communication or report from WAEC, NECO, or any examination body regarding widespread malpractice in either of the examinations,” the statement read.

The ministry advised students, parents, school administrators, and the general public to “disregard the fake press release currently in circulation,” describing it as “entirely fabricated, misleading, and intended to cause unnecessary panic and confusion.”

Lawyer/activist, Deji Adeyanju, has decried the alleged poor state of the Bola Tinubu International Conference Center ICC that was recently refurbished with N39 billion.

In June, President Tinubu commissioned the ICC that was renovated by the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike. The ICC which was built in 1991 by the Babangida regime, was then renamed the Bola Tinubu International Conference Center. It was reported that a whooping N39 billion was spent on the renovation.

The Nigerian Senate has again warned the suspended Kogi Central senator, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, to steer clear of the National Assembly premises, insisting there was no binding court order mandating her recall.

This latest warning came after Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, on Saturday, July 19, insisted on resuming plenary duties on Tuesday, July 22, citing a recent Federal High Court judgment delivered by Justice Binta Nyako in Abuja.

In a counter-statement released on Sunday, July 20, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Senator Yemi Adaramodu, dismissed the Kogi Central Senator’s claim while clarifying that the court merely offered an “advisory opinion” and not a compulsory directive to the upper legislative chamber.

“The Senate wishes to reaffirm, for the third time, that there is no subsisting court order mandating the Senate to recall Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan before the expiration of her suspension,” Adaramodu stated

According to the Senate spokesperson, the ruling by Justice Nyako only advised the Senate to consider reviewing its Standing Orders and possibly re-evaluating the suspension, which the court considered “might be excessive.”

He emphasised that the court also held that the Senate did not violate any legal or constitutional provision in its decision to suspend Akpoti-Uduaghan.

“Rather than issuing any mandatory order for her recall, the Honourable Court gave an advisory,” Adaramodu stressed. “It also found Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan guilty of contempt of court and imposed a ₦5 million fine, along with a directive to issue a public apology in two national dailies and on her page. These directives remain unfulfilled.”
