Lagos LG polls: Igbos are disenfranchised from voting, voted for — Ohanaeze

The President of the socio-cultural group in Lagos State, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Dr Solomon Ogbonna Aguene, has condemned the manner in which Igbos living in Lagos State are being disenfranchised and excluded from voting in the ongoing local government elections across the state.

Aguene also expressed displeasure over the denial of Igbo politicians the right to vote and be voted for during every election, alleging that there is no democracy in Lagos State.

He made this known while commenting on the conduct of the exercise at his Ikoyi, Lagos residence, on Saturday.

According to him, the denial of the Igbo from voting occurs in every cycle of elections in Lagos State.

He stated, “Do you know that the Igbo that are resident in Lagos state are denied the opportunity to vote? This is not just happening in this election; it occurs during every cycle of election. Igbo residents in the state are not given the opportunity to contest for local Government Chairmanship and councillorship positions. Despite our contribution to the economic and political growth of the state, we are being treated unfairly. There are one or two Igbo persons as Vice Chairmen of Local Governments.

“It is therefore safe to conclude that we don’t have democracy in Nigeria, because democracy promotes equity, justice and fairness. What we have is opportunists grabbing power and ruling. There is voter apathy in Lagos and Nigeria because Nigerians are tired of voting for opportunists.

“Igbos are the ones investing heavily in Lagos. They are supposed to be given the opportunity to hold some positions in the state. Governance in Nigeria is just for the few as many Nigerians are really suffering. The working class including journalists and security officers whose profession are essential cannot even work and shelter for their families. The situation in Nigeria is terrible.”

‘Save Us Before We Disappear!’ – Anambra Community Residents Cry Out As Gully Erosion Swallows Homes

The once-thriving community of Ekwulummiri in Anambra's Nnewi South Local Government Area is on the brink of collapse.

Gully erosion has ravaged the town, leaving a trail of destruction and despair. Homes, farmlands, and economic trees have been swept away, displacing families and threatening the very existence of the community.

"I'm scared for my children's future," said Mrs. Nneoma, a resident of Ekwulummiri, decried while speaking to SaharaReporters during a media briefing in Awka. "Every rainy season, we hold our breaths, praying that the gully won't consume more of our land. It's a constant fear that grips our hearts."

The gully erosion has not only destroyed physical structures but also disrupted the community's way of life. Farmers can no longer tend to their land, businesses are struggling, and children are forced to walk long distances to school.

"We've lost count of the number of times we've rebuilt our homes, only to see them washed away by the gully," said Chief Clement Ezeifedikwa, a community leader. "We're tired of living in fear. We need the government to intervene and save our community."

Despite efforts by the community to combat the gully erosion, the problem persists.

"We've planted trees, constructed drainage channels, and created catchment pits, but it's not enough," said Mr. Cassidy Ikejiaku, a youth leader, told SaharaReporters.

"The gully is getting bigger and deeper, and we can't stop it on our own."

The people of Ekwulummiri are crying out for help. They urge Governor Chukwuma Soludo and the Federal Government to declare an emergency and provide urgent assistance to mitigate the disaster.

"We're not just fighting for our homes; we're fighting for our lives," said Mr. Chinedu Anyaso, a stakeholder in the community. "We need the government to act now and save our community from this ecological disaster."

The situation in Ekwulummiri is a stark reminder of the devastating impact of gully erosion in Anambra State. With over 1,000 active erosion sites reportedly in the state, it needs urgent action to prevent further destructi

Deputy Speaker, Kalu Receives PDP bigwig, Chris Igwe, 13,000 followers into APC in Abia

Ahead of 2027 general elections campaigns, the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu on Monday received Chief Chris Odinaka Igwe into the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Umunneochi Local Government of Abia State.

Igwe, popularly called Chris Nak is the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Mainland Oil and Gas Limited.

A former influential member of the People's Democratic Party (PDP), Igwe defected to the APC with over 13,000 followers who are also members of Chris Odinaka Igwe Friends Club (CFC).

Other defectors are 27 PDP Ward Chairmen who collapsed their structures into the APC, pledging their unwavering loyalty to Kalu's visionary leadership.

The new members of the ruling party said that Kalu's impactful legislative works, particularly the establishment of the South East Development Commission (SEDC) were their driving force to join the APC.

Speaking at the reception that held in Isiochi, the home country of the oil magnate, Kalu commended Igwe for his decision to connect with the centre, saying that the people of Umunneochi local government area will not regret the move.

Accompanied by the Abia State Chairman of APC, Dr. Kingsley Ononogbu, the Deputy Speaker added that the defectors have automatically become members of the Renewed Hope Partners (RHP), a structure he recently unveiled for the reelection bid of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

He said: "Chief Chris Igwe and I have been friends for a long time. We have been in politics for a long time also. We were together in one political party before but he left for another one. But nevertheless, we have continued to be good friends since them. I like him for his sincerity and love for his people. He has a good heart. He loves God too. Whatever you give him for Ndi Isiochi must surely get to them. In fact, he will even add his own. He's doing well in his business, well known around the country.

"I welcome you to our great party, the APC. The decision you took is a commendable one. Chief Chris is a business man. He's comfortable but he has taken this decision for his people to bring them into the mainstream politics. The people of Umunneochi will reap the benefits. So, on behalf of the national chairman of the party and the State Chairman his representing, we are handing over this broom. I welcome you to Renewed Hope Partners. You are now members of this group.

"We have seen that the broom is not enough to go round. It shows that too many people from Isiochi are desirous of joining APC. Thirteen thousand people today are joining APC. Thirteen thousand members of CFC. We welcome all of you to this big family of APC."

Obi lied; I blocked him from visiting IDP camp for lack of courtesy: Alia

Governor Hyacinth Alia has given a reason for his blocking major opposition figure Peter Obi from visiting the IDP camp in Benue.

Mr Alia accused the Labour Party leader of violating standard protocols by failing to inform the governor ahead of his visit as courtesy demands.

Mr Alia, in an interview with TVC on Thursday, said Mr Obi was blocked from visiting the Benue IDP camp because his “intention” was unknown, and he violated protocols by not informing him in advance.

“A very respected Peter Obi was a governor. If you are coming into someone’s state, there are protocols. Very high personality; you are coming into someone’s state, and your party does not even know you are coming.

“I, the sitting governor, did not know you were coming. Then you are going into where I’m protecting even the most, the IDP camp. It’s my duty to protect them. They’ve been displaced. I need to protect them even some more. I don’t know the intent you have,” Mr Alia explained.

He added, “Is it not courteous enough for me to know as a sitting governor and even to provide more security to you and prepare the minds of the IDPs that a guest is coming to visit them?”

The governor denied claims that he was unreachable when the former Anambra called to inform him of his visit.

“No, that’s not the right narrative. I can never politicise that. I’m the one bearing the brunt, pain and sorrows of the IDPs in my state,” Mr Alia stated. “No. That’s not the true story. If he (Mr Obi) couldn’t reach me, I have a chief of staff, I have an SSG, (and) I have a PPS. That’s not true.”

Last week, Mr Alia said he could not guarantee the safety of any individual or group visiting Benue without his knowledge or clearance, barring Mr Obi from visiting the state.

However, Mr Obi expressed displeasure at how Mr Alia’s government allegedly politicised his planned visit to the troubled Benue.
