The United States has revoked the visa of Nigerian Nobel Prize-winning author and playwright Wole Soyinka, citing undisclosed reasons.
Soyinka, 91, confirmed that his non-immigrant visa had been canceled by the U.S. Consulate in Lagos, though no specific explanation was provided. He hinted that the decision may be connected to his past criticism of former U.S. President Donald Trump.
Speaking at a recent media event titled “Unending Saga: Idi Amin in Whiteface,” Soyinka revealed that he declined an invitation for a visa re-interview, describing the revocation notice humorously as a “love letter.”
The renowned writer, who once taught at several U.S. universities, famously destroyed his U.S. green card in 2016 after Trump’s election victory as a symbolic protest against growing intolerance in the country.
