According to evolutionary biology, birds evolved from reptiles and earlier from fish that already reproduced with eggs. The first amniotic eggs (hard-shelled, laid on land) appeared around 312–340 million years ago. Chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus) only evolved from red junglefowl about 8,000–10,000 years ago. Therefore, eggs existed hundreds of millions of years before any chicken ever did.
