Marlon Brando’s Mouthpiece from The Godfather (1972)
To physically transform into the iconic Don Vito Corleone, Marlon Brando wore a specially designed mouthpiece during the filming of The Godfather (1972). This dental prosthetic, crafted by a Beverly Hills dentist, gave Brando the jowly appearance he envisioned for the aging Mafia patriarch — helping him deliver the now-legendary raspy, mumbling voice that became central to the character.
Brando famously showed up to his audition with cotton stuffed in his cheeks to demonstrate his idea of how the Don should look and sound. Director Francis Ford Coppola loved it, and the mouthpiece was created to maintain that look throughout production. Today, it’s considered one of the most famous pieces of film makeup history — a small object that helped define one of cinema’s greatest performances.....
