Ẹ̀KÀ — THE ROYAL ENUMERATION

Ẹ̀KÀ is an ancient royal tradition of Ìlá Ọ̀ràngún, in which the names and histories of the Ọ̀ràngún who have occupied the throne are solemnly recounted, from Fágbàmílà Ajagun-ńlá, the founder of the kingdom, to the reigning monarch.

Observed for five days before the Orò festival, the rite is performed by the Baálẹ̀ Onílù, Chief Drummer of Ìlá, at Ojúgbaara, the forecourt of the Ọwaràngún’s Palace. Through the sacred voice of the gángan, the drummers invoke the memory of past kings, celebrating their wisdom, achievements and legacies while acknowledging the trials of their reigns.

On the fifth day, the drummers proceed ceremonially into the palace to meet the Kabiyesi Ọwaràngún in an elaborate display known as ÀLÙWỌLÉ.

Ẹ̀KÀ is more than an enumeration of kings; it is the living memory of Ìlá — a sacred bridge between the ancestors, the present generation and the future.

ÀWÒRÒ Ọ̀SẸ́: THE HERO OF ILA ORANGUN WHO BECAME A DEITY

Among the many legends woven into the heritage of Ila-Orangun was a fearless warrior whose courage transformed him from man to legend, and whose memory lives on in festival and song.

THE TERROR OF THE BIRD

Centuries ago, Ila-Orangun was threatened by a mysterious bird of misfortune. This was no ordinary creature—it brought death, fear, and destruction in its path. Skilled hunters and warriors of the land tried, but none could subdue it.

Desperation spread among the people; sacrifices and charms failed, and the community’s survival seemed uncertain.

THE ARRIVAL OF ÀWÒRÒ Ọ̀SẸ́

At this critical time appeared Aworo Ọse, a valiant hunter from Ifon.

Known for his courage, resilience, and deep spiritual roots, he stepped forward to face the menace. Twice he attempted the battle, and twice he failed. Yet, he was not one to surrender.

SPIRITUAL EMPOWERMENT

In his determination, Aworo Ọse sought the blessing of his mother, a devout worshipper of Orisa Obatala.

Through rituals, prayers, and cleansing, she fortified her son with divine strength. Spiritually empowered, he returned for one final attempt.

THE VICTORY

On his third mission, Aworo Ọse’s arrow found its mark. After a fierce struggle, the bird of terror was finally defeated, and peace returned to Ila-Orangun.

Hunters, townsfolk, and even the royal household celebrated this deliverance with great joy.

HONOR AND LEGACY

The Orangun of Ila recognized Aworo Ọse’s bravery. He was granted rare privileges, including the right to wear a special white crown known as “Ade sẹsẹ funfun.”

More than a warrior, he became a spiritual figure, and among his descendants, a representative is still installed as the living “Aworo Ọse.”

THE FESTIVAL OF ÀWÒRÒ Ọ̀SẸ́

His memory is preserved in the Aworo Ose Festival, a seven-day annual celebration of drumming, music, and cultural displays. Special traditions—such as the sounding of Aworo’s drum, the ritual throwing of pounded yam, and offerings of palm w**e, beans, and corn—keep his legacy alive. The climax comes with the symbolic dance representing unity and victory.
