*History of kajola ajaba and relationship between owaloja and orangun of Ila*
Kajola Ajaba is an historic agrarian and market settlement located within the Ila Local Government area of Osun State, closely tied to the greater Ila-Orangun and Igbomina cultural region.
Kajola Ajaba lies near the historic and abandoned iron-age settlement site of Ajaba, positioned along the Iresi–Ila-Orangun road. It serves as a regional crossroad connecting Osun State with Ekiti and Igbomina lands.
The community is headed by a traditional ruler. The stool of authority is held by the monarch, His Royal Majesty, Oba Bisiriyu Adekunle Adeniji (Ilufemiloye Kajewole I), who serves as the Owaloja of Kajola Ajaba.
Historically and presently, the area functions as an active weekly market hub where traders from various parts of Nigeria gather to buy and sell farm produce.
The broader Ajaba-Ila region features late iron-age archaeological heritage, showing deep historical roots of Igbomina habitation, ancient metallurgy, pottery traditions, and early agricultural clearing in northeast Yorubaland.
*Traditional Festivals*
Festivals in Kajola Ajaba act as a bridge between the community's agricultural lifestyle and its spiritual heritage.
(The Aje Festival): This is the most prominent annual festival celebrated in the kingdom. Held at the Owaloja's Palace, it is dedicated to Aje, the Yoruba deity of wealth, market commerce, and economic prosperity. The festival spans multiple days and attracts indigenous traders, neighboring monarchs, and cultural enthusiasts. Rites include prayers for bumper harvests, successful market weeks, and the town's overall economic development.
(Masquerade) Festival: In alignment with the broader Ila-Orangun custom, Kajola Ajaba participates in seasonal ancestral masquerade festivals. This involves the manifestation of highly revered family masquerades (Egungun) that dance through the town, offering blessings to the lineages and cleansing the land.
: Given its rich agrarian roots, the harvesting of new yams is accompanied by traditional rites. Before new yams can be sold extensively in the weekly markets, appreciation is given to the ancestors and the earth deities for a fruitful farming year.
The Orangun of Ila as Paramount Ruler: The Orangun of Ila ( His Imperial Majesty, Oba Abdulwahab Oyedotun Bibiire I) is the paramount ruler of the ancient Ila-Orangun Kingdom and the recognized spiritual head of the broader igbomina - yoruba land.
Historically, the Orangun holds traditional suzerainty over the towns, villages, and kingdoms within the Igbomina territory of Osun State, including Kajola Ajaba.
The Owaloja as a Sub-Regional Monarch: The Owaloja of Kajola Ajaba (currently His Royal Majesty, Oba Bisiriyu Adekunle Adeniji) is a crowned Oba within the Ila Local Government area. While the Owaloja holds autonomous royal authority over the Kajola Ajaba kingdom, his domain historically falls within the ancestral sphere of influence under the overarching crown of the Orangun.
The Owaloja of Kajola Ajaba (currently HRM Oba Bisiriyu Adekunle Adeniji) is a recognized monarch in his own right, presiding over an ancient town that has returned to its status as a beaded-crown kingdom. While he exercises direct sovereignty over Kajola Ajaba, he respects the ancestral primacy of the Orangun of Ila.
