MY CHILD IS NOT SMART, WHAT DO I DO? (PART ONE)
ENCOURAGE GROWTH MINDSET
1. Teach That Mistakes Are Okay
Let your child know it’s okay to make mistakes because we can learn from them and grow.
2. Teach Them Positive Self-Talk
Encourage them to speak kindly to themselves. Instead of saying, "I’m not good at this," they can say, "I can learn to do this with time, effort, and practice"
3. Show Them How You Keep Learning
Share with them times when you found something hard but kept trying. Let them understand that struggle can be part of learning something new.
4. Encourage Problem-Solving
Ask questions that let them think for themselves. For example, "What do you think we can try next?"
5. Help Them Set Small Goals
Work with your child to set small, easy-to-reach goals. For example, "Let’s try reading for 10 minutes every day this week and see how it goes."
6. Share Stories of People Who Worked Hard
Tell them stories about people who didn’t give up, like inventors or athletes, to show that success takes effort. For example, "Thomas Edison kept trying, even after many failures, before inventing the light bulb."
Keep encouraging your child. Embibe the growth mindset into them by teaching them these habits, letting them understand that learning takes effort and that they can get better with practice.
Always do it with love.
