NUT Orders Oyo Teachers on Indefinite Strike Amid Ongoing Abduction of Children
The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Oyo State Wing, has directed all public primary and secondary school teachers across the state to embark on an indefinite strike beginning Monday, June 1, 2026, following the continued captivity of teachers and pupils abducted in Oriire Local Government Area.
The union announced the decision in a statement issued on Sunday in Ibadan and signed by its Secretary, Mr. Olukayode Salami.
According to the NUT, the strike action became necessary due to the uncertainty surrounding the rescue and safe return of teachers and pupils kidnapped on May 15 from Community Grammar School, Ahoro-Esinle, Local Authority Primary School, Ahoro-Esinle, and Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota, all located near Ogbomoso.
The union expressed deep concern over the prolonged detention of the victims, noting that the situation has created widespread fear and anxiety among teachers while discouraging parents from sending their children to school.
The NUT explained that the industrial action was intended to draw the attention of relevant government authorities to the urgent need to intensify efforts toward securing the release of the abducted teachers and pupils.
As part of the directive, all public primary and secondary school teachers in the state have been instructed to withdraw their services from schools indefinitely until further notice.
The union urged members to comply fully with the directive, remain peaceful and law-abiding, and stay safe in their homes throughout the duration of the strike.
The NUT also reaffirmed its solidarity with the abducted teachers, pupils, and their families, assuring them of its unwavering support during the difficult period.
It further stated that lawful engagements with relevant government authorities would continue until all the victims regain their freedom.
