NANS Kwara Honours AAT University Founder at Maiden Students’ Welfare and Security Summit

The Director of Welfare, National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Kwara State axis, Comrade Muh’d Jamiu Abdulsalam Olarewaju, has named the founder of Abubakar AbdulRazaq Toyin University (AATU), Alhaji Abubakar AbdulRazaq Toyin, as the distinguished honouree for the maiden edition of the Students’ Welfare and Security Summit.

Abdulsalam disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday, saying the recognition forms part of efforts by his office to spotlight individuals and institutions contributing meaningfully to students’ welfare, education advancement, and youth development in Kwara State.

According to the student leader, the honour was in recognition of Alhaji Abubakar AbdulRazaq Toyin’s contributions to education, entrepreneurship, community development, and his vision in establishing a private university designed to address the growing demand for quality higher education and innovation-driven learning.

He noted that the emergence of Abubakar AbdulRazaq Toyin University has continued to attract attention within Nigeria’s educational landscape due to its focus on academic excellence, technological advancement, entrepreneurship, and leadership development.

“Through the establishment of AATU, Alhaji Abubakar AbdulRazaq Toyin has demonstrated a commitment towards creating opportunities for young people and strengthening access to quality education in Kwara State and beyond,” Abdulsalam stated.

Located in Ganmo (Oke-Ogba), Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, AATU was among the private universities granted operational licences by the National Universities Commission (NUC) in 2025 to commence academic activities.

The institution was established with the vision of producing graduates who are academically excellent, morally upright, globally competitive, and entrepreneurship-driven.

The university founder, who also serves as Chancellor, is widely recognised as a businessman, philanthropist, educational advocate, and community development enthusiast whose educational philosophy centres around combining academic learning with character development and practical innovation.

In August 2025, the NUC approved 14 full-time undergraduate programmes for the university for the 2025/2026 academic session across three faculties.

The Faculty of Science and Computing offers programmes including Computer Science, Cyber Security, Information Technology, Software Engineering, Biochemistry, and Biotechnology.

Other approved programmes under the Faculty of Arts, Management and Social Sciences include Accounting, History and Diplomatic Studies, Business Administration, and Economics, while the Faculty of Environmental Sciences runs programmes in Architecture, Estate Management, Quantity Surveying, and Urban and Regional Planning.

The institution’s leadership structure also features Professor AbdulRauf Ambali as the pioneer Vice-Chancellor, while Justice (Dr.) Isa Ayo Salami, OFR, CFR, chairs the Board of Trustees.

Members of the Board of Trustees include notable academics and professionals such as Prof. Popoola Ademola Oladapo, Prof. Angela Freeman Miri, Prof. Umaru Alhaji Pate, and Shehu Ahmed Moyosore, Esq.

The maiden Students’ Welfare and Security Summit is expected to focus on addressing pressing concerns surrounding students’ welfare, safety, and the overall learning environment across tertiary institutions in Kwara State.

18-year-old boy arrested for alleged murder of another teenager in Bauchi

Eighteen-year-old Aisanu Nura has been arrested by the Bauchi State Police Command for allegedly committing culpable homicide against another teenager, 17-year-old Abdullahi Muhammad.

According to a statement signed by SP Nafiu Habib, the Police Public Relations Officer, the police have begun an investigation into this case following a tragic incident reported in Kari Village, located in the Darazo Local Government Area of the state.

On May 24, 2026, around 4:15 PM, the Darazo Divisional Police Headquarters received a report indicating that Abdullahi Muhammad, a resident of Kari Village, had drowned in the Kari River under circumstances that suggest involvement by Aisanu Nura, who lives in the same area.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect allegedly lured the victim to the river and drowned him. Darazo Division operatives responded promptly to the scene, arrested the suspect, and initiated an investigation. As of the time of this report on Wednesday, the body of the deceased has not yet been recovered, and search efforts are ongoing.

The case has now been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Bauchi for a thorough and detailed investigation.

Commissioner of Police, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, has directed that the investigation be conducted professionally and diligently to uncover the circumstances surrounding this unfortunate incident. He assured the public that justice will be served according to the law, and anyone found culpable will face prosecution.

The Command also urged members of the public, especially parents and guardians, to closely supervise teenagers and to report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station.

NDC primaries: Aspirants cry out to Obi, Kwankwaso over alleged manipulation

Aggrieved aspirants of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Imo State have appealed to the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and vice-presidential candidate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, to intervene in what they described as the manipulation of the party’s National and State Assembly primaries in the state.

The aspirants, led by former House of Representatives member Dr Uche Nwole, alleged that vested interests hijacked the primaries and that the results eventually submitted to the party’s national headquarters did not result from any recognised electoral process.

Addressing journalists in Abuja while presenting a petition to the NDC Appeal Committee, Nwole said the intervention of Obi and Kwankwaso had become necessary to save the party from a crisis that could undermine its credibility and electoral fortunes in Imo State ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Copies of the petition were addressed to the party’s National Leader, Senator Seriake Dickson; National Chairman, Senator Cleopas Moses Zuwoghe; Obi and Kwankwaso.

The petition, jointly signed by Nwole, Barrister Charles Onyeagbako, Tony Okpe, Dr. Nworgu and Mr. Nwulu, accused the electoral panel deployed by the party’s national leadership of abandoning the primary election process and producing results outside the approved procedure.

According to the petitioners, members of the electoral panel, led by Chief Babatunde Ali, had assured aspirants and stakeholders at a meeting in Owerri that candidates would emerge either through consensus or direct primaries across the state’s wards.

They explained that when attempts to reach a consensus failed, aspirants returned to their various local government areas and mobilised supporters in preparation for direct primaries.

The aspirants, however, claimed that no member of the electoral panel or any designated returning officer appeared to conduct the exercise anywhere in the state.

“We mobilised and waited for the returning officers to conduct the direct primary and never saw a single soul throughout the night and early in the morning,” Nwole said.

According to the petitioners, local government party chairmen and executives eventually conducted the primaries, collated the results and transmitted them through the state party structure for onward submission to the national headquarters. They alleged, however, that while party officials were conducting the exercise at the grassroots, members of the electoral panel relocated to the residence of a prominent politician in Emekuku, Owerri, where alternative results were allegedly prepared before being taken to Abuja.

The aspirants further claimed that members of the panel became unreachable during the exercise, allegedly switching off their telephone lines and avoiding contact with key party officials, including the state chairman and local government chairmen.

They also protested what they described as the attempted imposition of Barrister Uche Onyeagucha as a candidate, warning that such actions could alienate party members and damage the NDC’s chances in the state.

The petitioners further alleged that before the primaries, a party chieftain, Chief Martin Agbaso, had boasted that he had secured control of the party structure in Imo State and would determine who emerged as candidates for elective positions.

Urging Obi, Kwankwaso and other party leaders to urgently intervene, the aspirants called for a thorough investigation into the conduct of the primaries and the role played by the electoral panel.

They also appealed to the Appeal Committee to recognise only the results allegedly conducted by local government chairmen and party executives and reject what they described as “purported and forged” results submitted by the panel.

“The future of the party in Imo State depends on the credibility of this process,” the petitioners said, insisting that only candidates who emerge through transparent and democratic primaries should fly the party’s flag in the 2027 elections.

Police arrest seven over illegal gun factory in Yobe

Seven people have been arrested by the Yobe State Police Command for allegedly operating an illegal gun-running factory in Potiskum, a major town in the state.

This development aligns with the renewed strategies of the Commissioner of Police aimed at combating crime and criminality across the state, marking a significant breakthrough in uncovering the illegal fi****ms fabrication site in Potiskum.

According to a Crime Bulletin issued by the Command and signed by the Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Dungus Abdulkarim, the incident occurred on June 2, 2026, at approximately 6:00 PM.

Acting on credible intelligence, the Potiskum Area Command conducted a coordinated raid in collaboration with the Divisional Police Headquarters after receiving reports that some blacksmiths were engaged in the illegal fabrication of Dane guns and other fi****ms.

Police operatives swiftly mobilized to the scene, a blacksmith workshop located at Tasha Adua along Danchuwa Road, Potiskum.During the operation, the police arrested seven suspects and recovered several exhibits, including two fabricated pistols, twenty-four muzzle pipes, nine gun butts, four unserviceable Dane guns, one filing machine, and one sharp cutlass.

The suspects are currently undergoing thorough investigations to identify their collaborators, potential buyers, and the intended use of the fabricated fi****ms.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Usman Kanfani Jibrin, has directed the officers handling the case to intensify their investigations, identify other illegal fi****ms fabrication centers within the area, and assess the level of security threats posed by such criminal activities.

The Command further advises members of the public not to allow their premises or facilities to be used for unlawful activities, including the fabrication of dangerous weapons.

Residents are urged to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious movements or activities to the nearest police station or other security agencies.

Power Minister commends TCN, NDPHC, AEDC for boosting electricity supply

Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, has commended the management and staff of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC), and Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) for their commitment to improving Nigeria’s electricity infrastructure and service delivery.

In a statement made available to journalists, Tegbe praised TCN for the successful energisation of a new 300MVA transformer at the Katampe Transmission Substation in Abuja, describing it as a major milestone that will significantly increase transmission capacity across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The minister also lauded the collaboration between TCN and AEDC in responding to the sudden failure of a 100MVA transformer in the FCT last Friday, which disrupted power supply to parts of Abuja. According to him, both organisations swiftly deployed technical resources and worked round the clock to restore electricity within 24 hours.

He described the rapid response as a strong example of inter-agency cooperation and citizen-focused service delivery being promoted by the Ministry of Power.Tegbe further commended the management of NDPHC, led by its Managing Director, Engr. Jennifer Adighije, for successfully reviving the 450-megawatt Alaoji Open Cycle Power Plant in Abia State.

The power plant, developed under the National Integrated Power Projects (NIPP), had been inactive since 2023. Its restoration, the minister noted, positions it to supply up to 375 megawatts of electricity to the national grid, boosting power availability in the South-East and enhancing grid stability nationwide.

The minister assured workers and agencies across the power sector that outstanding performance and productivity would continue to be recognised and rewarded under his leadership.

He reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s power infrastructure and urged stakeholders to remain innovative and dedicated to the goal of delivering reliable electricity to homes, businesses and industries across the country.

Insecurity: Is politics driving South-West governors apart?

General Editor, Politics, Taiwo Adisa, examines the ominous silence among holders of political power in the South-West in the wake of bandits’ dastardly attack on Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, the kidnapping of students and their teachers.

In recent years, three events have put to the test the level of unity and cohesion among governors of the South-West, especially under the aegis of the South-West Governors Forum.

The forum, once led by the late Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, was never shy of putting on display its ability to speak with one voice at critical junctures. One instance was during thJune 2019 killing of Mrs. Funke Olakunrin, daughter of Afenifere leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti. The second was the processes leading to the establishment of Amotekun corps and then the attack on St. Francis Catholic Church, Owo, by bandits, killing parishioners and residents of the community. The governors scaled the three huddles, making the forum emerge smelling like roses before the people.

Mrs. Olakunrin, Pa Fasoranti’s daughter, was attacked and murdered by suspected bandits along the Benin-Ore Expressway on her way to Lagos. The governors of the region immediately pulled together despite the differences in political inclinations. Five of the governors attended the burial of Mrs. Olakunrin on June 22, 2019. They included Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos), Dapo Abiodun (Ogun), Kayode Fayemi (Ekiti), Rotimi Akeredolu (Ondo), and Seyi Makinde (Oyo). The governors were quoted in the media as expressing readiness to tackle the incursion of banditry and insurgency into the region. Some observers have indicated that the incident was one of the propelling forces that gave fillip to the governors’ push for the establishment of the Western Nigeria Security Network, otherwise called Amotekun Corps, under the administration of the late President Muhammadu Buhari.

Perhaps owing to the political sophistication of the zone, all of the six states have not really come under one political tendency since the start of the Fourth Republic. One or two states would just be left out in the opposite camp. The Olusegun Obasanjo tsunami of 2003 swept five of the six states, leaving Lagos, while the resurgence of the progressives in the zone has also been unable to bring all the states under one umbrella. At a point, Ekiti State, under Governor Ayo Fayose, was the only one left on the ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), while the other states were ruled by the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), which transformed to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Oyo State joined Ekiti on the PDP flank in 2019, but Ekiti soon ported to the APC fold, and then Osun also left the progressives’ fold when Governor Gboyega Oyetola lost to Senator Ademola Adeleke of the PDP. Despite the undulating nature of political control in the zone, the governors under the South-West Governors’ Forum (SWGF) appeared focused on the goal of a united Oodua land.

Some analysts would say that the link provided by Oodua Group of Companies could be the source of the gravitational pull, while others have said that much of the united front is being championed by the Development Agenda for Western Nigeria (DAWN) Commission, a semi-official body which acts as the think-tank for the South-West states. Whatever it was, the governors appeared to keep passing the huddles against a united region. Whatever it was, the governors appeared to keep passing the huddles against a united region. So, aside from the test provided by the killing of Pa Fasoranti’s daughter, the attack on St. Francis Catholic Church, Owo, on June 5, 2022, was another test of the governors’ unity.

Members of the SWGF immediately visited Governor Akeredolu to commiserate with the people of Ondo State, while a virtual meeting was later held days after by the governors, who declared a three-day mourning period across the states. A communique of the meeting, which was later released by the late governor Akeredolu, indicated that the South-West states would observe the mourning period between June 13 and June 15, 2022, to symbolise the collective loss across all the South-Western states of the country.

The communique read in part: “The recent attack on St. Francis Catholic Church, Owaluwa Street, Owo, compels immediate intervention in the whole of the South-West to nip the insidious phenomenon of insurgency in the bud. The meeting subsequently took decisions, some of which are expected to have far-reaching implications in the quest to protect lives and property in the region.” During the three-day mourning period, flags were directed to fly at half mast in all public institutions across the zone in solidarity with the attack on the Owo Church by bandits who are still having their days in court. Though the Owo incident, coming a year after the inauguration of the South-West Security Network, Amotekun, was read by some analysts as a possible attack on Akeredolu’s immediate domain for his forceful approach in handling the affairs of the SWGF, the development did not occasion any break in transmission by the governors.

The governors had scaled another major test to their unity when they launched the Amotekun Corps on January 9, 2020, in Ibadan, Oyo State. That was, although the governor of Oyo State was (and is still) a member of the PDP. Having scaled such critical huddles as mentioned above, unfolding events, however, appear to be showcasing an SWGF that is growing wary or one divided along political lines. The forum, which is today under the leadership of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, appears to be going soft and largely unheard, compared to the Akeredolu days.

On January 6, 2026, the Old Oyo National Park office located at the Oloka Village in Oriire local government of Oyo State was attacked by bandits, who killed some officials of the Forest Guards and forcefully released some herders who were said to have strayed into the park. The SWGF was not as loud about that event as it used to be, but the silence was felt the more when, on May 15, 2026, reports indicated that bandits had again attacked Oriire local government via the Old Oyo National Park; this time, they kidnapped 39 students and seven teachers. They showed a video of the dastardly decapitation of the Mathematics teacher, Michael Oyedokun, who was one of the kidnapped, after they had earlier killed a teacher in one of the schools attacked. The attack on Ahoro Esinele and Yawota villages has caught national attention, leading to condemnation and protests by teachers under the Nigerian Union of Teachers and civil society organisations. Despite the widespread condemnation of the banditry, hitherto unseen in the South-West, the SWGF has been unable to speak with one voice this time. Unlike what happened during the Owo massacre, when flags were flown at half mast and days of mourning were declared, the secretariat of the South-West Governors is yet to pay a visit to the affected state, while the governors’ forum is yet to project a strong voice that would showcase a regional abhorrence of the development. Though the Federal Government had sent delegations to the affected community, officials of the government at the centre have not been seen at the state capital or openly working with the state government on plans aimed at bringing back the kidnapped children and their teachers.

Questions are bound to be raised as to whether politics is already acting as the dividing line for the governors. Incidentally, two of the six states are not under the control of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). While Oyo State, under Governor Seyi Makinde, is ruled by the PDP, Osun State, under Governor Ademola Adeleke, which was initially under the PDP, recently slipped to the Accord Party, following the protracted crisis that rocked the former ruling party, threatening to deny Adeleke the chance to seek re-election in the August 2026 off-season election.

Could it be that the South-West governors are too engrossed in election activities, such that they are unable to focus on the human tragedy happening in Oyo? Are they being influenced by the conspiracy theories already being woven around the incident? Incidentally, the attention of the state governors to the regional security outfit, Amotekun Corps, also appears to be waning over the years. Aside from Oyo State, which recruited the highest number of corps members, each of Ogun, Ondo, Osun, and Ekiti has recruited very few members, while Lagos has shown no particular interest in putting Amotekun to work.

That was even though each of the states agreed to provide a legal basis for the Amotekun corps by passing its establishment law through the houses of assembly. Whatever it is, the people of the South-West expect their governors to act as the true chief security officers of their states, and in line with constitutional guarantees, ensure the security and welfare of the people who occupy the geographical space that falls under their jurisdiction.

Poland moves to ban smartphones in primary schools

Poland has revealed a plan to ban mobile phones in all primary schools from the next academic year, under draft legislation approved by the government on Tuesday.

The proposal, which will now be submitted to parliament, would take effect on September 1, 2026.

In Poland, primary school education spans from the first to the eighth grade. The planned law by Poland would prohibit the use of mobile phones and other devices capable of recording audio or video during lessons and breaks.

The ban would apply to both public and private schools, the Education Ministry said.

Exceptions would be permitted when the use of a phone is required for teaching purposes, educational support, or health and safety reasons.

Education Minister Barbara Nowacka said the measure is a response to calls from teachers for stricter rules on smartphone use in schools.

She said that more than half of Poland’s schools have already introduced similar restrictions on a voluntary basis.

The government also approved a package of measures aimed at strengthening child protection online, which must likewise be approved by parliament.

The proposals include tighter restrictions on minors’ access to websites containing po*******hy and measures designed to speed up the removal of illegal online material.

Under the plans, operators of adult-content websites would be required to verify users’ ages anonymously, without collecting browser data or personal information.

41st Birthday: Friends, Associates Hold Prayer Session for Speaker Danladi at Ancient Ilorin Central Mosque

Friends and political associates of the Speaker of the Kwara State House of Assembly and gubernatorial flagbearer of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the 2027 election, Rt. Hon. Engr. Yakubu Danladi-Salihu, on Sunday converged at the historic Ilorin Central Mosque in Idi-Ape for a special prayer session to commemorate the lawmaker’s 41st birthday anniversary.

The prayer session, led by Imam Maraba of Ilorin Emirate, Imam Aliyu Olayinka Gbamuragaji, drew a large turnout of dignitaries. Members of the Kwara State House of Assembly, Local Government Executive Chairmen, party stalwarts, and supporters of Rt. Hon. Danladi-Salihu all gathered to seek divine blessings for the Speaker on his new age.

The venue itself holds deep significance in the rich history of the Ilorin Emirate. The old Ilorin Central Mosque is the same ground that once hosted the legendary Sheikh Alimi and other revered men and women whose lives left indelible marks on the sands of time.

According to Imam Maraba, prayers offered at the old Ilorin Central Mosque carry added weight it is akin to standing where the righteous once stood, in the company of those who understood and believed that leadership without God is a dangerous path.

Extolling the personal virtues of patience, loyalty, and compassionate leadership that Speaker Danladi embodies, Imam Maraba noted that the celebrant’s strong faith in Allah has been a powerful force behind his consistent triumphs.

He added that returning to Allah on the occasion of his birthday anniversary, at such a symbolic place of worship in the heart of Ilorin, further demonstrates the deep connection Speaker Danladi and his supporters have established with their Creator.

While praying for the success of the 10th Assembly Speaker’s gubernatorial ambition in 2027, Imam Maraba also offered special prayers for Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s administration, for peace, unity, and a more prosperous Kwara State.

Court orders arrest of couple over alleged N87.4m land fraud

A Federal High Court in Lagos has issued a bench warrant for the arrest of Tunde Akobi and Rebecca Tayo Akobi over their alleged involvement in an N87.4 million land fraud.

The court, presided over by Justice Ambrose Lewis-Allagoa, granted the order while adjudicating in a suit marked FHC/L/115c/2026, following an ex parte application filed by S. O. Ayodele of the Force Criminal Investigation Department, ForceCID Annex, Alagbon-Ikoyi, Lagos.

Ayodele told the court that the application was brought under sections 113 and 114 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015, the Extradition Modification Order 2014, and the Federal High Court Extradition Procedure Rules 2015.

According to an affidavit sworn by Chief Superintendent of Police Omitosin Rotimi, the lead investigator, the ForceCID received a petition from Mrs Nena Eunice Nwokoro alleging that the couple obtained N87.4 million from her under false pretences in 2021.

The money was allegedly paid for land that was never delivered.

The police stated that the complainant provided payment receipts to support her claims, adding that the couple is believed to be in the United Kingdom, and INTERPOL, in collaboration with the Ministry of Justice, is working to repatriate them to face trial.

Granting the application, Justice Lewis-Allagoa ordered that a bench warrant be issued against the couple to ensure their attendance in court.

The pending charges against Tunde Akobi and Rebecca Tayo Akobi include obtaining money by false pretence contrary to section 1(1)(c) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Related Offences Act 2006, and stealing contrary to sections 383 and 390(9) of the Criminal Code Act, Cap C38, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.
