Etiquettes of a Tafsīr Gathering; A serious Call to the audience.
As we gather to listen to the explanation of the Qur’an, we must remember that a tafsīr circle is not an ordinary assembly. It is not a social event, nor a cultural routine. It is a sacred gathering centered upon the words of Allah. Just as the one who explains the Qur’an carries a heavy responsibility, so too does the audience.
First, every attendee should come prepared with a personal copy of the Qur’an. Holding the Book, following the verses as they are recited and explained, and reflecting directly upon the text deepens understanding and preserves focus. The tafsīr gathering is not merely for listening; it is for engagement. The Qur’an deserves to be followed line by line, not heard casually.
One should also arrive before the mufassir begins. Late entry disrupts concentration and shows a lack of preparation for a gathering that revolves around divine revelation.
Most importantly, there must be absolute silence. A tafsīr circle filled with unnecessary noise, side conversations, loud greetings, hailing, chanting, or exaggerated reactions contradicts the very essence of the gathering. Allah says:
"وَإِذَا قُرِئَ الْقُرْآنُ فَاسْتَمِعُوا لَهُ وَأَنْصِتُوا لَعَلَّكُمْ تُرْحَمُونَ" [الأعراف: ٢٠٤]
If silence is commanded during recitation, then it is even more required during explanation. Tafsīr is not a rally, not a performance, and not a place for emotional display. It is knowledge. And knowledge grows in calmness, not in chaos.
Let our gatherings reflect reverence. Let there be focus instead of noise, humility instead of hailing, and reflection instead of chanting.
Finally, the gathering should be marked by tranquility. The Qur’an descended with serenity, and its explanation should be surrounded by dignity and calmness.
If we demand sincerity and discipline from the mufassir, then we must also demand reverence and responsibility from ourselves as listeners. The Qur’an is too noble to be surrounded by disorder.
May Allah grant us gatherings of knowledge that are filled with humility, focus, and transformation.
