AN OPEN LETTER TO ALL POLITICAL OFFICE HOLDERS FROM KWARA NORTH:
RE: Insecurity, Kidnapping, Banditry, and the Alleged Attempt to Silence the Truth
To: The Senator Representing Kwara North Senatorial District, Members of the House of Representatives, Members of the Kwara State House of Assembly, and all Political Appointees from Kwara North Local Government Areas (Baruten, Edu, Kaiama, Moro, and Patigi).
We, the concerned citizens and constituents of Kwara North, address you today not as political rivals, but as your own people—the very people you were elected and appointed to serve, protect, and represent.
Our homes, our farmlands, our villages, and our routes have become hotbeds of insecurity. The devastating tide of kidnapping and banditry is no longer a rumour; it is a grim, daily reality that has crippled our economic activities, emptied our communities, and instilled a deep, paralyzing fear in the hearts of our mothers, fathers, and children. We are tired of raising ransom and burying our dead. We are simply seeking to live in peace and safety.
This crisis demands urgent, collective, and sincere action from every one of you who rose to power on the promise of a better life for Kwara North.
Our Questions to Our Representatives:
1. Where is Our Voice in the Face of Crisis?
When we cry out about the menace of banditry in our local governments, we are speaking the truth of our trauma. This is not political propaganda; it is a desperate plea for survival. Why are the voices of your constituents not being amplified in Abuja and Ilorin with the urgency this crisis requires? Why must the people feel abandoned to fend for themselves against sophisticated criminal gangs?
2. Why the Threat of Silence?
The most shocking development is the alleged use of legal action and court processes to threaten, harass, and silence community members and activists for speaking out against the insecurity.
We must ask: Why are you trying to silence us for speaking the truth?
* Is the truth about kidnapping and banditry now an offence in our democracy?
* Whose interest does this silencing serve—the community's or that of those who fear accountability?
* Is your primary duty to the comfort of your office, or to the lives and security of the people who put you there?
If you are truly representing us, your energy should be directed towards collaborating with security agencies and the State Government to track down the bandits, not to track down and muzzle the very people you represent.
3. Are You Still Part of Us?
When a representative turns the instruments of the state against their own people for raising a legitimate alarm, it raises a fundamental question: Are you not part of us anymore? Have the privileges of office completely severed your link to the suffering of your people back home?
The oath you took was to defend the people, not to defend your political image at the expense of our right to life and free expression.
An Appeal for Immediate Action
We urge you to immediately do the following:
* Recall and Denounce Any Legal Threats: Publicly instruct the withdrawal of any lawsuit or threat of legal action against community members speaking on the security crisis. This single act will restore much-needed faith in your commitment to the people.
* Unite and Act: Put aside all political differences and convene a unified forum of Kwara North political office holders to devise a robust, non-partisan strategy to tackle insecurity.
* Lead the Advocacy: Become the fiercest advocates for increased security deployment, military bases, intelligence gathering, and support for local vigilantes in our Senatorial District.
Our patience is not endless. The relationship between the representative and the represented is sacred. Do not let your constituents feel that they must now fear their own leaders more than they fear the bandits.
We await a decisive and reassuring response that proves your commitment to Kwara North is unwavering and your loyalty remains with the people.
Signed,
Concerned Citizens and Constituents of Kwara North Senatorial District.
