The Ogun State Gateway International Agro-Cargo Airport has made history with the successful landing of its maiden test flights. The airport, which is located at Iperu-Ilishan Road, Ikene local government, in Ogun State, Nigeria, was officially opened by Governor Dapo Abiodun.

The cargo airport is a mega airport project conceptualized by the Governor to create the necessary infrastructure to boost the exportation of agricultural and non-agricultural goods, and reinvigorate social and economic activities in the state, which will subsequently increase revenue generation.

The first private aircraft landed at 2:15 pm, to the excitement of the Ogun people who had gathered to witness the occasion. Among the Ogun State dignitaries that witnessed the achievement included Governor Dapo Abiodun, former Governors Segun Osoba, Gbenga Daniel, former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dimeji Bankole, and the traditional class, including the Akarigbo of Remonland and Awujale of Ijebu, represented by the Orimolusi of Ijebu Igbo.

The height of the day was the landing of Valuejet airline at 3:30 pm, making it the first commercial flight to land at the cargo airport. The airline's Managing Director, Mr. Kunle Soname, described the opportunity as invaluable to the airline.

The Commissioner for transport, Mr. Akin Adesanya, described the event as historic. He stated that the opening of the cargo airport, which has the longest runway in the country, was made possible following the pledge made by the Dapo Abiodun government to deliver it to the people of the state before his first tenure.

Former Governor Gbenga Daniel, who was also present at the event, went down memory lane to attribute reasons for mooting the idea of the cargo airport. He emphasized the resolve to make the airport an alternative to Lagos airport and further make business and transportation of goods seamless to farmers in the state.

The Ogun State Gateway International Agro-Cargo Airport is expected to boost the state's economy by increasing revenue generation and enhancing the exportation of agricultural and non-agricultural goods. The Rivers State Police Command apprehended Dr. Chinyere Igwe, a federal lawmaker representing Port Harcourt Federal Constituency 2 in the House of Representatives, on suspicion of attempted vote buying and money laundering.

The police found $498,100 and a list for the distribution of the money in his possession during a stop and search duty at about 2:45 pm on Thursday, along Aba Road in the state capital. Grace Iringe-Koko, the Police Public Relations Officer of Rivers State Police Command, confirmed the arrest in a statement issued on Friday.

The arrest of the suspect, close to the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has triggered swift interrogation and arraignment in court, as directed by the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of elections, Abutu Yaro. The Police Command calls on all contestants and political parties to comply strictly with the provisions of the Electoral Act and other relevant laws. Members of the public are encouraged to report any observation that may lead to a crime or breakdown of law and order using the following hotlines: 08032003514, 08098880134.

The arrest of Dr. Chinyere Igwe is a significant development in the ongoing fight against electoral fraud in Nigeria. Vote buying, a common practice in Nigerian elections, undermines the country's democracy and puts the credibility of the electoral process at risk. It is a violation of the Electoral Act 2010 and punishable by a fine, imprisonment or both.

The Nigerian government has been making efforts to address electoral malpractices, including setting up the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and enacting the Electoral Act. However, these efforts have not been entirely successful, as vote buying and other forms of electoral fraud continue to occur during elections.

The arrest of Dr. Chinyere Igwe highlights the urgent need for more robust measures to curb electoral fraud in Nigeria. It also sends a clear message to other politicians and stakeholders involved in electoral malpractices that such acts will not be tolerated. The Nigerian government must continue to strengthen its institutions and laws to ensure free, fair and credible elections in the country.

In addition, the attack on the premises of Atlantic TV and Wish FM belonging to Mr Igwe two days prior to his arrest is a cause for concern. Such acts of violence against political opponents are unacceptable and have no place in a democratic society. The Nigerian government must take proactive measures to ensure the safety and security of all citizens, especially during election periods

Wuhan has resumed back to normal life after restriction since January. Activities will begin fully as the city is emerging from isolation due to dreaded coronavirus.

Returnees, some wearing two face masks, latex gloves and protective suits, were greeted at the railway station by staff in similar anti-virus gear — a grim reminder that while the city was emerging from isolation, it was still far from normal.

“As the train neared Wuhan, my child and I were both very excited,” a 36-year-old woman told AFP. She and her daughter had been away from her husband for nearly 10 weeks.

“It felt like the train was moving faster than before, and my daughter said the driver must know we really want to go home. Click here for complete story https://www.focusnews.com.ng/2020/03/life-returns-to-normal-as-china-reopen.html
