S.O. Foundation Launches Second Phase of Scholarship Program for 100 Indigent Students in Ilorin South

In a continued effort to promote education and support indigent students, the S.O. Foundation, led by its Chairman, Alhaji Rilwan Sulyman Olawale, has launched the second phase of its scholarship program targeting 100 students in Ilorin South Local Government Area of Kwara State.

The initiative, which covers newly admitted JSS1 and SS1 students across various public schools in the state capital, builds on the success of the first phase implemented in September. That phase saw over 700 JSS2 and SS2 students benefit from the foundation’s educational support.

Speaking at the launch, Alhaji Rilwan Sulyman Olawale reiterated that the S.O. Foundation remains committed to complementing the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the educational reforms of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, CON. He emphasized that improving access to quality education for less privileged students is key to building a stronger and more prosperous society.

According to him, “The socio-economic status of this program is designed to benefit students from low-income families enrolled in public schools. Education today means the betterment of tomorrow, and we are proud to contribute to that vision.”

He further appreciated all stakeholders and partners for their unwavering support, noting that the S.O. Foundation will continue to prioritize education as a tool for empowerment and community development.

The scholarship program reflects the foundation’s enduring commitment to educational advancement and its dedication to nurturing young talents in Kwara State.

Federal Staff School Adewole Hijab Saga

By Hamidu Bashir

Federal Staff School, Adewole, was established in 1986. It was founded by Federal Civil Servants and Civil Service bodies, specifically by the federal ministries, departments, and agencies in Kwara State, to cater to the educational needs of the children of federal staff newly posted to the state.

The school was created as a pseudo-public institution by the federal government staff in the state and is guided by the Nigerian Constitution and the National Policy on Education. These laws ensure that schools provide education without discrimination based on religion, tribe, gender, or social status.

Importance of the Hijab to Muslims

The hijab holds a central place in the life of a Muslim woman. It symbolizes modesty, obedience to Allah, and self-respect. The word hijab literally means “covering” or “barrier,” representing both the physical covering of the body and the moral boundaries that govern a Muslim’s conduct.

Wearing the hijab is not merely a cultural choice but an act of worship and a declaration of faith. It signifies submission to the divine command of Allah as stated in the Qur’an, Surah An-Nur (24:31) and Surah Al-Ahzab (33:59). It protects a woman from unwanted attention and serves as a visible mark of dignity and modesty.

The Nigerian Constitution on Freedom of Religion

According to Section 38(1) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended):

"Every person shall be entitled to freedom of thought, conscience and religion, including freedom to change his religion or belief, and freedom to manifest and propagate his religion or belief in worship, teaching, practice and observance.”

This constitutional provision guarantees every Nigerian, regardless of background, the right to express and practice their faith freely, without fear of discrimination or suppression.

Background of the Matter

Recently, social media was awash with reports that a staff member of Federal Staff School, Adewole, forcefully removed the hijab from the heads of some female Muslim students. Such an act stands as a clear violation of the constitutional right to freedom of thought, conscience, and religion.

Commendation must, however, go to the Honourable Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Dr. Lawal Ọlálékan Olohungbebe, who swiftly intervened. Arriving at the school gate as early as 6 a.m., he successfully brokered peace among the stakeholders. His timely mediation led to a resolution allowing female Muslim students to wear a customised school-approved hijab designed by the school itself.

Reflections and Call for Responsibility

This incident raises important questions:
Who oversees the day-to-day running of the school?
What role do Muslim parents play, active or passive, in the school’s affairs?

It is indeed troubling that, 39 years after the establishment of Federal Staff School, Adewole, the community is still debating whether Muslim girls should be allowed to wear the hijab, a fundamental symbol of their faith. Such a controversy reflects not only administrative lapses but also a worrying decline in our collective imān (faith).

May Allah guide us toward justice, tolerance, and sincere respect for one another’s faith.

Wa’Llāhu al-Mustaʿān.

Federal Fire Service Takes Fire Safety Sensitization to Az Adabiyyah School in Ilorin

In its continuous effort to promote safety consciousness and reduce fire incidents across Kwara State, the Federal Fire Service, Kwara State Command, on Wednesday, 15th October 2025, held a fire safety sensitization campaign at Az-Zumratul Adabiyyatul Kamaliyyah School for Arabic and Islamic Studies, located along Kamaldeen Street, Okekere, Ilorin.

This was contained in a press statement made available to Just Event Online TV by ASF I Jimoh Modibbo Ibrahim, Public Relations Officer, Federal Fire Service, Kwara State Command

The outreach, carried out under the directive of the State Controller, ACF Bakare Mary, aimed to educate students and school management on fire safety principles and preventive measures.

Speaking during the session, ASF II Abdulwahab Musa underscored the importance of fire safety awareness, explaining the causes, effects, prevention, and control of fire. He noted that schools are particularly vulnerable to fire outbreaks, stressing the need for proactive education among students.

ASF II Isiaq Muhammad, in his address, discussed the stages of fire development and emphasized the significance of understanding safety procedures to ensure prompt response and control in schools and other public places.

Also contributing, ASF II Ayinla Haliru and ASF II Ameen Lateefat highlighted the principles of fire extinguishment and conducted a live demonstration on the proper use of fire extinguishers. They encouraged schools, homes, and offices to maintain functional firefighting tools to handle early-stage fire emergencies effectively.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASF I Jimoh Modibbo Ibrahim, urged students to apply the knowledge gained, remain vigilant against fire hazards, and always prioritize safety. He reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to continuous community engagement and safety advocacy across the state.

In his remarks, the Principal, Sheikh Abdulhamid Yusuf Aliy, appreciated the Command for the impactful exercise and called for sustained collaboration. He introduced the officers to the Grand Khalifah of the Adabiyyah Association of Nigeria, As-Sheikh Abdulqadir Kamalud-deen Al-Adabiy, who commended the fire officers for their dedication to public safety education.

Nupeko TV Publisher Remanded in Correctional Centre Over Defamation Suit Filed by Kwara Commissioner

The legal tussle between the Kwara State Commissioner for Water Resources, Hon. Usman Yunusa Lade, and the publisher of Nupeko TV, Tauheed Mohammed, has taken a dramatic turn as the journalist was remanded at the Oke Kura Correctional Centre in Ilorin.

Just Event Online TV reports, The remand order was issued by the Chief Magistrate Court, Ilorin Magisterial District, following proceedings on the Direct Criminal Complaint filed by Commissioner Lade. The complaint accuses Mohammed of defamation, criminal intimidation, and other related offences under the Penal Code.

According to the court filings, the charges stem from a publication by Nupeko TV which alleged negligence, mismanagement, and financial impropriety by the Commissioner in relation to the Lafiagi Waterworks Project.

The court, after reviewing preliminary submissions, ordered Mohammed’s remand pending further hearing, which has been adjourned to October 20, 2025.

This development comes amid a ₦10 million civil defamation suit already pending against the publisher, marking a significant escalation in the confrontation between the state official and the media entrepreneur.

Observers say the case underscores the rising tension between public officials and journalists in the state, raising fresh concerns about press freedom, accountability, and the limits of free expression in political reporting.

Meanwhile, the controversy continues to generate widespread public reaction, particularly following the Kwara North petition calling for Commissioner Lade’s removal over alleged administrative lapses.

The case will continue at the next adjourned date as both parties prepare for what is shaping up to be one of the most closely watched media-related legal battles in the state.

Reacting to message from Just Event Online TV, the honourable commissioner for Water Resources, Hon Yunusa Lade said No Comment

Leadership, Impact, and Legacy at NILDS — Prof. Amana’s Ongoing Reform Mission

When Prof. Abubakar Olanrewaju Sulaiman (Amana) assumed office as the Director-General of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS), many expected a continuation of what had always been. Instead, what they witnessed was transformation — steady, strategic, and visionary. Under his stewardship, NILDS evolved from a relatively quiet institution into a dynamic national think-tank driving the deepening of democracy, legislative efficiency, and good governance in Nigeria.

From the onset, Prof. Sulaiman made it clear that NILDS would not just exist to produce papers but to produce impact. Guided by his trademark principle of “ideas that work,” he redefined the mission of the Institute — positioning it as the intellectual engine room of the National Assembly and a respected centre for policy innovation in Africa. He recognized that the legislature, as the fulcrum of democracy, needed continuous learning, research, and technical support to function optimally. NILDS, under his leadership, became the bridge between legislative work and scholarly excellence.

Prof. Amana introduced reforms that improved the Institute’s structure, academic programs, and international partnerships. He strengthened research capacity and encouraged the publication of policy briefs that directly influenced national debates. His insistence on institutional discipline and transparency revived the work ethic of the organization. Under his direction, NILDS has become a model of administrative efficiency — blending academic depth with practical governance insight.

Perhaps one of his most outstanding achievements has been the expansion of NILDS’ academic and training scope. He oversaw the introduction of postgraduate programs in collaboration with the University of Benin, enabling young Nigerians and legislative staff to acquire advanced degrees in areas such as legislative studies, governance, and public policy. This initiative did not only raise the profile of the Institute but also contributed to capacity building across Nigeria’s democratic institutions.

Beyond the borders of Nigeria, Prof. Sulaiman has positioned NILDS as a continental leader in parliamentary research and training. Through partnerships with ECOWAS, the African Union, and other international organizations, NILDS has hosted high-level seminars and policy dialogues on democracy, peace, and security. These engagements have placed Nigeria at the centre of legislative innovation in Africa.

What truly distinguishes Prof. Sulaiman’s leadership, however, is his humility and accessibility. Despite being a former Minister and university professor, he leads with a human touch — listening, mentoring, and inspiring. Staff of the Institute describe him as a “leader who works with you, not above you.” He believes in teamwork and institutional ownership. Under him, NILDS has become not just a workplace but a learning community, where ideas are respected and contributions are valued.

His leadership style is anchored on accountability and merit. He encourages excellence and rewards commitment. It is this culture that has produced tangible outcomes — from the successful hosting of annual democracy conferences to the production of vital legislative tools used by the National Assembly and State Houses of Assembly nationwide.

But beyond administrative success, Prof. Amana’s work at NILDS reflects a larger vision — the strengthening of Nigeria’s democratic culture. He has consistently argued that democracy is not sustained by elections alone, but by institutions, education, and informed citizens. Through NILDS, he has championed civic education, youth engagement, and policy literacy programs across Nigeria. His advocacy for gender inclusion in legislative processes has equally earned him accolades from women groups and democratic institutions across the country.

Today, NILDS stands as one of Nigeria’s most credible policy institutions — vibrant, respected, and impactful. And behind that success is a man whose intellect, discipline, and commitment to public service continue to shape a generation. Prof. Abubakar Olanrewaju Sulaiman’s leadership at NILDS is a powerful demonstration that institutions thrive when led by visionaries, not opportunists — by thinkers who act, and actors who think.

As we approach his 60th, “DIAMOND BIRTHDAY ANNIVERSARY” of his journey deserves to be celebrated not just for its achievements, but for what it represents — leadership that works, intellect that inspires, and patriotism that endures. Prof. Amana’s mission at NILDS remains ongoing, but his impact is already timeless — a legacy of learning, leadership, and love for country.
