Security: Criminals suffer mass casualties as security forces target hideouts in Ifelodun

Dozens of criminals implicated in recent breaches in Ifelodun have fallen to a coordinated fire power of security forces, according to multiple security sources.

In an operation that began on Sunday night through Monday morning, the security forces and vigilantes launched a renewed campaign to flush the criminals out of their hideouts around Baba Sango and Oro River, near Babanla in Ifelodun Local Government Area.

“As security forces made inroads into their hideouts, they launched a feeble ambush which was immediately resisted by the security agents. Many of the criminals were killed in the process. No death was recorded on the part of the security forces. Those who were injured are already being attended to,” according to a source.

Another source said air assets are also being deployed as part of the operation, underscoring the commitment of the government to rid the large forested area of the violent elements who had been targeting unarmed civilians in nearby communities.

Igbomina Professional Association raises alarm over rising insecurity, calls for urgent collective action

The Igbomina Professional Association expresses deep concern over the rising wave of insecurity threatening villages, families, and communities across Igbomina land and Kwara South.

In a statement issued today by the President of the Association, Barr. Bode Iranloye, Esq., the Association acknowledges and appreciates the efforts of His Excellency, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, the Executive Governor of Kwara State, as well as the Chairmen of the Igbomina Local Government Areas (Ifelodun, Irepodun, Isin, and Ekiti LGAs), alongside security agencies, for the steps taken so far to address security challenges in the region.

However, the Association notes that more coordinated, sustainable, and community-driven actions are urgently required to stem the tide of insecurity.

The Association describes the trend as a recurring menace undermining peace, agriculture, commerce, and the very fabric of communal life. It therefore calls for urgent and collective measures to address the crisis before it escalates further.

Key Recommendations:

1. Strengthening Community Security Structures. Integrating vigilante groups and hunters with the Nigerian Police under proper regulation, while empowering traditional rulers to play a stronger role in intelligence gathering.

2. Economic Empowerment and Job Creation. Establishing skill acquisition centres, agricultural support schemes, and digital training hubs to reduce youth unemployment and poverty-driven crime.

3. Education, Enlightenment, and Value Reorientation. Reviving Omoluabi values of discipline and integrity through moral and religious education, alongside sustained sensitization campaigns against crime.

4. Intelligence and Technology. Deploying drones, emergency hotlines, and community alert apps for early warning systems, while enhancing resident and visitor data collection at the local government level.

5. Collaboration Between Security Agencies. Strengthening synergy among the Police, NSCDC, DSS, Amotekun, and the Military, with tighter surveillance of border communities adjoining Kogi, Ekiti, and Osun States.

6. Political Will and Good Governance. Ensuring sincerity of leadership, equal enforcement of the rule of law, and improved financial, material, and welfare support for security operatives.

7. Dialogue and Conflict Resolution. Sustaining farmer/herder peace platforms, convening regular youth town halls, and holding periodic reviews of security challenges at the local government level.

8. Role of Citizens and Media. Encouraging community vigilance through the “see something, say something” approach, responsible parenting, and proactive media engagement to inform the public and counter misinformation.

The Association further urges the government and its relevant agencies to identify displaced persons and provide them with relief materials to complement the support already being offered by their host communities.

In the same vein, it stresses the importance of establishing a permanent Army base in the affected area as a matter of urgency.

The Association emphasizes that insecurity cannot be solved by security agencies alone.

“Lasting peace in Igbomina land requires the joint commitment of government, traditional institutions, religious bodies, media, and citizens working together in sincerity and truth,” the statement reads.

It further highlights that poverty, unemployment, and moral decay must be urgently addressed if Kwara South and Nigeria at large are to enjoy sustainable peace.

E-Signed:

*INEC REC Visits EFCC Ilorin Zonal Office, Seeks Stronger Collaboration*

The newly deployed Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC, of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, in Kwara State, Dr. Hale Gabriel Longpet, on Friday, August 8, 2025, paid a courtesy visit to the Ilorin Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

The visit, which took place at the Commission’s office in GRA, Ilorin, was aimed at strengthening institutional collaboration between the two agencies in the discharge of their statutory mandates.

Welcoming the REC, the Ilorin Zonal Director of the EFCC, Daniel Isei, fsi, commended INEC for its pivotal role in safeguarding Nigeria’s democratic process and reaffirmed the EFCC’s readiness to support the electoral body in ensuring free, fair, and credible elections in Kwara State. He noted that the fight against corruption includes curbing electoral malpractices such as vote buying, bribery, and other forms of financial inducement that undermine the integrity of the polls.

Earlier, Dr. Longpet said that the visit was part of his familiarisation tour to key stakeholders in the state and a demonstration of INEC’s commitment to partnering with anti-graft agencies in the quest to deepen democracy. He stressed that credible elections require the joint effort of all stakeholders to ensure transparency and accountability before, during, and after the electoral process.

While outlining his vision for electoral administration in the state, Dr. Longpet emphasised the need for citizens to actively participate in the ongoing voter registration exercise. He disclosed that about 166,800 Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) remain uncollected in Kwara as at today. “I want to boost the voting strength of Kwara, but I cannot do that without people coming out to participate in voter registration,” he said, urging residents to collect their PVCs and register to vote in future elections.

Both agencies identified key areas of collaboration, including intelligence sharing on electoral offences, joint sensitisation campaigns to educate the public against vote trading, and the prompt prosecution of electoral offenders.

The REC expressed optimism that with the EFCC’s support, incidences of financial inducement during elections could be drastically reduced, thereby enhancing public confidence in the process.

The meeting ended on a note of mutual commitment, with both parties pledging to work closely in the interest of democracy, good governance, and the rule of law.

Just In: Curious TV Launches In Ilorin, Tapping Fiber Optic Advantage

Ilorin’s status as an emerging hub in Nigeria’s digital economy received a fresh boost on Sunday with the launch of Curious Television, a new online broadcast platform dedicated to amplifying grassroots voices.

Pioneered by multiple award-winning journalist, Olufemi Akobi, the station made its debut at a well-attended ceremony that drew media practitioners, politicians, and government officials.

Akobi explained that the idea behind Curious Television was to “give voice to the voiceless” and ensure that communities at the grassroots are not left behind in national conversation.

Industry watchers note that Ilorin offers a strategic advantage for such ventures, as the city already enjoys robust fiber optic internet coverage, enabling high-quality streaming and digital content delivery.

With the arrival of Curious Television, Ilorin further strengthens its reputation as a fertile ground for digital media innovation in Nigeria’s expanding online broadcast industry.
