A Day in Oloru: How One Manβs Vision Is Transforming Young Lives Through Code
By Alanamu Abiola Kazeem
On June 19, 2025, I embarked on a purposeful journey to Oloru Town in Moro Local Government Area, Kwara State - a quiet yet powerful reminder that innovation and transformation often begin in the most unexpected places.
My destination: a thriving Computer Hub established by the Iliasu Ibrahim Foundation, founded by Engr. Rotimi Iliasu Suleiman, FNSE, FNIMechE, the Tayese of Jebba Land and Otunba Tadeese of Oba Land. This was no ordinary visit , it was an opportunity to witness the quiet revolution unfolding in rural Kwara through the power of technology.
At the heart of the Foundationβs current efforts is a free coding program, offering students hands-on training in Python and programming basics, entirely tuition-free. In a country where tech education is often inaccessible, this initiative is more than generous; it is revolutionary.
Upon arrival, I was immediately struck by the sense of purpose in the room , laptops aglow, young eyes locked in focus, fingers dancing across keyboards. These were not just students learning syntax and functions, they were dreamers in training, building futures once beyond reach.
The atmosphere was electric , not just with code, but with hope.
One of the most moving moments came when Oloyede Faith, a bright-eyed JSS2 student, shared her thoughts:
βThis initiative is a wonderful one that can shape our future β
Her voice was filled with clarity and conviction, a glimpse of the empowered woman sheβs becoming.
Ojo Joshua Oluwatobiloba, a corps member from Oyo State, added:
βDo you know how much weβd pay for this kind of training elsewhere? This is a brilliant initiative, and I pray for the Foundation for giving back to society.β
And Fadeyi Johnson Oluwatimileyin, a recent NYSC graduate, shared:
βI heard about the program from a friend. Being part of it has truly been a privilege, a deeply rewarding experience.β
Mr. AbdulRasheed Abdullahi, the lead tutor (also a beneficiary of Iliasu Ibrahim Foundation, spoke with pride about the studentsβ enthusiasm and progress:
βThe children are catching on in real time. Their energy is incredible. This is a wonderful opportunity, and I sincerely thank the founder for making it possible.β
But beyond the classroom, what stood out most was the vision and legacy of Engr. Rotimi Iliasu Suleiman. Though no longer in public office, his impact continues to ripple through his community. Through this Foundation, he is not only creating opportunities , he is redefining whatβs possible for young people in underserved areas.
In a world often saturated with stories of failure and fatigue, this visit to Oloru was a breath of fresh air, a quiet revolution of vision, empowerment, and meaningful action.
As I left the town that evening, the images of those bright faces stayed with me, a silent affirmation that true change begins with those who dare to lead, long after the spotlight fades.
