Senator Saliu Mustapha, representing Kwara Central at the National Assembly, on Friday evening hosted members of the Ilorin Emirate community in the United Kingdom to a dinner.

The gathering, described as both pleasant and engaging, provided an opportunity for the lawmaker to commend the community for their steadfast commitment to the development of Ilorin and Nigeria, despite living abroad.

Senator Mustapha also assured the diaspora group of his continued support in fostering initiatives that promote growth and unity at home and abroad.

In his remarks, the lawmaker expressed gratitude to the Ilorin Emirate community in the UK for their commendations, prayers, and dedication to the shared heritage of the Emirate.

“I am confident that, together, we will continue to promote unity and progress for our Emirate and Nigeria at large,” he stated.

Nigeria politics is about betrayal, I witnessed it in 2015 - Jonathan

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has accused his allies of betraying him during the 2015 elections.

Speaking on Thursday at Mike Oghiadomhe‘s 70th birthday celebration in Benin, Edo state capital, Jonathan said many Nigerian politicians cannot be trusted.

“Politics in the Nigerian standard is about betrayals. I witnessed a lot of betrayal during 2015 election,” he said.

“You will find it difficult to see somebody who will say the same thing in the morning and say the same thing in the afternoon and in the evening.

“They will tell you something this minute, and in the next hour, they will say another. For the next hour, they will say another thing. But, I am quite pleased to associate with Oghiadomhe.”

Jonathan described Oghiadomhe as a reliable and trustworthy person who can “take a bullet” on his behalf.

“For me, he [Oghiadomhe] is somebody you can take his words to the bank. Most politicians, you can not take their words to the bank.”

Oghiadomhe was Edo deputy governor from 1999 to 2007 and later served as the chief of staff to Jonathan between 2010 and 2014.

Atiku warns Nigeria drifting into authoritarianism under Tinubu

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has raised concerns that Nigeria is sliding towards authoritarianism under President Bola Tinubu.

In a statement on Friday, Atiku cited recent incidents in Kaduna, Katsina, and other states, including police invitations to former Kaduna governor Nasir el-Rufai and African Democratic Congress (ADC) leaders, the attack on ex-attorney general Abubakar Malami’s convoy, and the disruption of a Katsina Elders Forum meeting on security reforms.

He described the developments as “a coordinated and dangerous assault on dissenting voices, civic freedoms, and the very essence of pluralistic democracy.”

Atiku stressed that dissent is central to democracy and cautioned against criminalising opposition, silencing reform advocates, and undermining civic engagement.

“No government that intimidates citizens or weaponises security agencies against opponents can claim to uphold democratic values,” he said.

The former vice-president warned that Nigeria risks sliding into authoritarian rule if the trend continues, urging citizens to resist a return to an era of “fear, silence, and impunity.”

He called on Nigerians to defend democracy collectively, noting that “power is transient, but history will harshly judge those who wield it against the people instead of in their service.”

Stop harassing el-Rufai, Malami, focus on bandits - ADC tells Police

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused the federal government of using law enforcement to intimidate opposition leaders “while failing to tackle widespread insecurity”.

The party condemned the summons issued to Nasir el-Rufai, former governor of Kaduna; and the attack on the convoy of Abubakar Malami, former attorney-general of the federation.

In a statement on Friday, Bolaji Abdullahi, ADC national publicity secretary, described the developments as “an assault not just on individual politicians, but on Nigeria’s democracy itself”.

He said the police appear more interested in “silencing opposition leaders than protecting citizens” while terrorists and bandits continue to run riot across the north.

Abdullahi alleged that thugs armed with stones and cutlasses recently attacked an ADC gathering in Kaduna as police officers looked away.

“Instead of arresting those responsible, the police are now targeting the victims with summons,” he said.

He added that in Kebbi, Malami’s convoy was attacked in broad daylight near a police outpost, with no arrests made.

The ADC spokesperson also said police in Kaduna sealed off the party’s office ahead of a planned meeting of zonal leaders.

According to him, such actions are a deliberate attempt to stifle the party’s constitutional right to assemble and organise.

“These acts by the police are not isolated. They represent a systematic attempt to criminalise opposition politics, especially in states where the ruling party feels threatened by the growing influence of the ADC,” Abdullahi said.

The party demanded the immediate withdrawal of the summons issued to el-Rufai and other ADC leaders, insisting the invitations were politically motivated.

The ADC also asked the police to unseal its office in Kaduna and publish the names of individuals who filed complaints that triggered the investigations.

2027: Opposition plan to unseat Tinubu is national, not northern agenda - Tambuwal

Former Sokoto governor and lawmaker, Aminu Tambuwal, says efforts to defeat President Bola Tinubu in 2027 are based on “national consensus” rather than a northern agenda.

Speaking on Channels TV, Tambuwal dismissed claims that the African Democratic Congress (ADC)-led coalition is pro-north, noting that members like Peter Obi and Rauf Aregbesola reflect its nationwide appeal. He said the plan is democratic, lawful, and aimed at ensuring a change of government on May 29, 2027.

Tambuwal accused the Tinubu administration of failing to meet Nigerians’ expectations, stressing that the president is not unbeatable. “Every claim that Tinubu cannot be defeated is rubbish,” he said.

The former House of Representatives speaker maintained that a united opposition—comprising Atiku Abubakar, Obi, Rabiu Kwankwaso, and even Goodluck Jonathan—would be strong enough to remove Tinubu.

“When this happens, the dynamics will be different, and people’s voting patterns will change,” he added. Tambuwal, however, declined to disclose his preferred presidential candidate, saying he would do so when aspirants declare.

Collecting fare from man and failing to show up is punishable offence - Police

The Rivers State Police Command has cautioned against a common social trend of collecting transport money from men and failing to honour the meeting, warning that such behaviour is a punishable offence.

In a viral video circulating online, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Grace Iringe-Koko, described the act as fraudulent and punishable under the law.

Collecting Transport Fare from a Man without Going to See Him is an Offense that Could Land You in Jail — Rivers Police PPRO Informs You-Know-Who

“Taking transport fare from a man without actually going to meet him is an offence. It is regarded as obtaining money under false pretence, and the law considers it a crime,” she explained.

The police spokesperson noted that if reported, offenders could be arrested and prosecuted, stressing that people must desist from financial dealings that involve deceit.

The video has stirred wide debate on social media, with some Nigerians arguing that the matter is more of a moral failing than a criminal act, while others agreed that it constitutes fraud.

My reforms have restored Nigeria’s global respect – Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday said his administration’s bold economic reforms, which aim to restore Nigeria to its enviable position, are achieving favourable results.

He added that the country’s economy is now stable and attracting interest from around the world.

“The bleeding has stopped. Haemorrhage is gone; the patient is alive,” Tinubu said when he received the Soun of Ogbomosoland, Oba Ghandi Olaoye, Orumogege III, in audience with some other royal fathers, at the State House, Abuja.

The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, disclosed details of the meeting in a statement he signed on Wednesday titled ‘In just two years, Nigeria is now respected globally.’

President Tinubu said, “Years of neglect and self-deception, fake records, smuggling, and all of that denied Nigeria the necessary revenue for progress and development.

“Then we were confronted again with arbitrage trading of currency, an illusion of selling papers, corruption all over the place, and the integrity of the country and its economy being extremely and adversely challenged.

“We had to take those actions. With your prayers, patience, perseverance and great understanding, I’m glad to tell you today that the economy is stabilised.”

The President also said the establishment of NELFUND was to ensure that no student would drop out because of poverty.

He affirmed that everybody has a right to education as it is the “greatest weapon you can give to human beings against poverty.”

“That’s what we are doing. We have remained aggressive on our infrastructure. And it’s just two years,” he said.

President Tinubu thanked the monarch for crediting his administration with the bold decisions taken immediately upon resumption of office.

He noted that the people of Ogbomoso land were already feeling the modernisation and transformation introduced by the monarch, who promised to strengthen traditional institutions.

FG Declares Friday Public Holiday for Eid-ul-Mawlid

The Federal Government has declared Friday, September 5, 2025, as a public holiday to commemorate Eid-ul-Mawlid, the birthday of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

The announcement was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Interior, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, on behalf of the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.

Ajani congratulated Muslims in Nigeria and across the world, urging them to emulate the Prophet’s exemplary virtues of peace, love, humility, tolerance, and compassion. She further encouraged Nigerians of all faiths to use the occasion to pray for peace, security, stability, and national unity.

“The Minister of Interior wishes Muslims a joyous and peaceful Eid-ul-Mawlid celebration. The occasion provides another opportunity to strengthen brotherhood, promote peaceful coexistence, and embrace the Prophet’s teachings of mutual respect and selfless service to humanity,” the statement read in part.

The minister also appealed to citizens to remain law-abiding, security conscious, and supportive of government policies designed to foster unity and sustainable development.

Eid-ul-Mawlid, observed in the third month of the Islamic calendar (Rabi’ al-Awwal), is marked with prayers, lectures, processions, and charitable activities. In Nigeria, it is recognised as a national holiday, reflecting the country’s large Muslim population and tradition of celebrating major Islamic festivals.

Kwankwaso Open to joining APC - Jibrin

Abdulmumin Jibrin, NNPP lawmaker from Kano, says Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso is open to joining the All Progressives Congress (APC), but some Kano APC stakeholders are against his entry.

Speaking on Channels TV’s Politics Today, Jibrin explained that resistance is largely due to political ambitions, especially from those eyeing governorship positions. He said talks on Kwankwaso’s political future are ongoing, but emphasized that his own focus is on promoting stability and pushing for a government of national unity.

“Kwankwaso has always maintained that his doors are open for discussions. Everything is a possibility,” Jibrin noted, stressing that politics in Kano is complex.

Kwankwaso, however, recently urged NNPP members not to be distracted by defections or coalition talks, insisting that decisions ahead of the 2027 elections will be taken collectively in line with party supremacy.

Jibrin, who enjoys strong ties with both President Bola Tinubu and Kwankwaso, has held two private meetings with Tinubu at the State House in recent weeks. When asked if these were part of plans to defect, he refused a direct answer but maintained that “everything is open” and that the unity of the country remains his priority.

‘I Know Where Bandits Are, With My Phone I Can Show You Their Location - Zamfara Governor

Zamfara State governor, Dauda Lawal, has declared that he knew the exact locations of bandit leaders terrorising the state but was powerless to act because he does not control security agencies.

In a viral video that has stirred reactions, Lawal lamented that despite his knowledge of bandits’ movements, the ongoing fight against insecurity was being crippled by the fact that security chiefs in Zamfara State take directives only from Abuja.

“I swear to Almighty Allah, wherever a bandit leader is located within Zamfara State, I know it and if he goes out, I know,” he said. “With my mobile phone, I can show you where and where these bandits are today. But we cannot do anything beyond our powers.”

The visibly emotional governor added: “If today, I have the power to give orders to the security agencies, I can assure you, we will end banditry in Zamfara State within two months. Most of the time, I shed tears for my people because I can see a problem but I cannot order the security operatives to act in time.”

Lawal narrated how bandits once invaded Shinkafi Local Government Area of the State while security operatives in the state failed to respond because they had not received clearance from Abuja.

“There was a time the bandits invaded Shinkafi and the security operatives were alerted, but they refused to go simply because they were not given orders from Abuja,” he said.

He stressed that his administration has gone the extra mile to support security outfits despite lacking direct command. Recently, Zamfara distributed 150 patrol vehicles to police, army, DSS, and civil defence. Thousands of Community Protection Guards were recruited, and 2,000 hunters from Borno and Yobe hired to reinforce the fight.

“I am doing all these despite the fact that I have no control over the security agencies; but because it’s my responsibility to protect the lives and properties of the people of Zamfara,” he said.

Tinubu celebrates VP Shetima on 59th Birthday

President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Vice President Kashim Shettima on his 59th birthday, describing him as a loyal partner, dependable deputy, and “brother” in the mission of building a greater Nigeria.

In a goodwill message released on Monday through his aide, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu commended Shettima’s courage, tenacity, and belief in Nigeria’s future, noting that his service as Governor of Borno State and Senator for Borno Central exemplified leadership as service above privilege.

The President praised Shettima’s passion for democracy, good governance, and economic growth, stressing that his vibrancy, loyalty, and support have been instrumental in driving the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

Highlighting their joint efforts, Tinubu pointed to progress in food security, investment reforms, and international partnerships, acknowledging Shettima’s critical input in shaping policies that will bring more schools, hospitals, jobs, and trade opportunities for Nigerians.

He added that their relationship goes beyond official duties, serving as a bridge across regions and traditions, united by a common purpose. Tinubu prayed for renewed vitality, wisdom, and more years of impactful service for the Vice President.
