In one of the most thought-provoking presentations of the event, Dr. Y.K. Jimoh Ilala delivered a passionate lecture on what he believes are the hidden reasons behind the steady decline of Arabic practice in today’s society. Using the remarkable legacy of Shaykh Adam Abdullah Al-Ilory as a case study, he challenged parents, scholars, and the wider Muslim community to rethink the future of Arabic education.
According to Dr. Y.K. Jimoh Ilala, one of the major causes of this decline is that many professors and scholars of Arabic today fail to raise their own children to continue the legacy they spent their lives building. He argued that instead of encouraging their children to study Arabic or Islamic Studies, many are guided toward professions such as Law, Engineering, Medicine, and other fields. In his view, this has contributed significantly to the gradual decline of Arabic scholarship, as fewer young people are prepared to carry the torch to the next generation.
Dr. Jimoh Ilala further explained that this is one of the reasons the legacy of Shaykh Adam Abdullah Al-Ilory continues to thrive. Using Shaykh Adam as a case study, he stated that the renowned scholar ensured his children remained committed to Arabic and Islamic scholarship, preserving the vision and mission he established. He described this as a model worthy of emulation by today’s scholars and parents.
Beyond his analysis, Dr. Jimoh Ilala also shared how this broader societal trend has personally affected him and his own family, making the lecture not only intellectually engaging but also deeply personal and inspiring.
This impactful lecture was delivered during The Importance of the Arabic Language in Today’s Society, held to commemorate the formal commissioning of the Shaykh Adam Abdullah Al-Ilory Centre for Computing and Digital Technology in Ganmo, Kwara State, the first flagship project under the Arabic Schools Development Programme.
