Troops Uncover Illegal Crude Oil Refinery In Rivers Forest

Troops of the Joint Task Force South-South, Operation Delta Safe, have uncovered an illegal crude oil refining site hidden within the Orashi National Forest in Ahoada West Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The discovery was made during a coordinated anti-illegal bunkering operation conducted on June 3 by troops of the 16 Brigade, Garrison, and 5 Battalion, according to military sources.

Security analyst Zagazola Makama disclosed the development in a post on X on Friday, citing information obtained from military authorities.

According to the report, the illegal refining camp was located deep inside the forest reserve and was being used for the unauthorized processing of crude oil.

During the operation, troops recovered several items used for refining activities, including two large drum ovens, two coolant systems, two receiver containers, and two waste pits.

The soldiers also discovered a galvanized pipeline measuring approximately 100 metres, which was allegedly being used to facilitate crude oil processing at the site.

Military sources said the facility was actively engaged in illegal petroleum refining operations before it was uncovered by security operatives.

The recovered equipment was handled in line with the operational guidelines and procedures of Operation Delta Safe, the sources added.

The operation forms part of ongoing efforts by the military to curb crude oil theft, dismantle illegal refining camps, and protect critical oil and gas infrastructure across the Niger Delta region.

Security authorities noted that illegal bunkering and crude oil theft continue to pose significant economic and environmental challenges, resulting in revenue losses and environmental degradation in oil-producing communities.

They further assured that surveillance and clearance operations would continue across the region as troops intensify efforts to identify, disrupt, and dismantle other suspected illegal refining sites and criminal networks involved in oil theft.

Hon Ayilara Hails Ilorin West Chairman Ladan on National Achievement Award

The Special Adviser on Legislative Matters to Kwara State Governor, Hon. Ayilara Abdulgafar, has congratulated the Executive Chairman of Ilorin West Local Government Area, Mallam Shehu Abdulrahman Babatunde Ladan, on his recent National Achievement Award conferred by Rootswatch Magazine.

Ayilara described the recognition as a testament to Ladan’s dedication to public service, grassroots development and commitment to improving the lives of residents across Ilorin West.

In a congratulatory message made available to journalists, the governor’s aide said the award was a fitting acknowledgement of the local government chairman’s leadership qualities and impactful contributions to governance.

According to him, Ladan has continued to distinguish himself through people-oriented programmes, prudent administration and a strong commitment to community development, earning the trust and admiration of the people he serves.

He noted that the honour did not only celebrate Ladan’s personal achievements but also reflected the progress being recorded in local government administration under his leadership.

Ayilara further expressed confidence that the award would serve as motivation for the Ilorin West chairman to sustain his efforts in delivering quality governance and developmental projects to the grassroots.

“Your recognition at the national level is a clear indication that hard work, dedication and selfless service do not go unnoticed. This honour is well deserved and a source of pride to the people of Ilorin West and Kwara State at large,” he stated.

NILDS DG Under Fire as Reps Probe Alleged Partisan Political Involvement

The House of Representatives has launched an investigation into the Director-General of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies, Prof. Abubakar Sulaiman, over allegations of active participation in partisan politics while in office.

The probe followed the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance on Thursday by a lawmaker from Katsina State, Salisu Yusuf, and 12 others.
The lawmakers in their motion argued that the development raises serious concerns about adherence to public service regulations and the political neutrality expected of officials occupying sensitive public offices.

Leading the debate on the motion during plenary, Yusuf told the House that Sulaiman allegedly participated in the All Progressives Congress governorship primary process in Kwara State while still occupying his position as Director-General of NILDS.

He said, “Evidence already in the public domain showed that the NILDS boss purchased nomination forms, underwent screening and contested in the primary election, where he reportedly secured 1,722 votes.”

The lawmaker said the development had “generated widespread concern, particularly given the strategic role of NILDS as a non-partisan institution established to provide research, policy support and capacity development for the National Assembly and other democratic institutions.”

He further informed the House that a petition submitted by the Association of Legislative Drafting and Advocacy Practitioners accused the NILDS Director-General of abuse of office and failure to comply with extant laws governing public officers.

Yusuf argued that the allegations, “if proven, would amount to a violation of provisions regulating the conduct of public servants seeking elective political office.”

According to the motion, Sulaiman did not resign from office before joining the political contest, despite provisions of the Code of Conduct for Public Officers and a presidential directive requiring political appointees and public officials seeking elective positions to resign by March 31, 2026.

Lawmakers backing the motion warned that failure to address the issue could “weaken discipline within the public service and erode public confidence in institutions expected to operate above partisan interests.”

They cautioned that allowing senior public officials to openly participate in party primaries while retaining their positions would set a “dangerous precedent” for agencies and institutions under the National Assembly and across government.

Following the debate, the House adopted the motion and mandated its Committee on Legislative Library, Research and Documentation to investigate the allegations and report back within one week.

The motion was adopted after it was seconded and put to a voice vote at a session presided over by the Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas.

The controversy touches on longstanding provisions in Nigeria’s public service framework designed to separate public administration from partisan politics.

As DG of NILDS, Sulaiman heads an institution created to strengthen legislative practice, democratic governance and public policy development.

The institute serves the National Assembly through research, legislative drafting support, training programmes and policy analysis.

Because of its mandate, NILDS is widely regarded as one of the key non-partisan institutions supporting Nigeria’s democratic process.

The investigation is also coming amid growing political activity ahead of the 2027 general elections, with several public office holders reportedly positioning themselves for elective offices across the country.

The Ilorin Emirate Students Union National Headquarters has elected Isiaq Abdullahi Awola as its new National President, with the newly elected leader promising to promote unity, inclusiveness, accountability, and the welfare of members during his tenure.

Awola, in his maiden address following the conclusion of the union's election, expressed gratitude to members for the confidence reposed in him, describing his emergence as a call to service rather than a position of privilege.

The new president thanked members of the union for entrusting him with the responsibility of leading the organisation, pledging to work tirelessly towards strengthening the union and advancing the interests of students across the Ilorin Emirate.

He said, “This great responsibility is not merely a position but a call to service, unity, growth, and progress for our noble union. I am deeply honoured and humbled to lead at this crucial time.”

Awola assured members of purposeful leadership and promised to run an administration anchored on transparency, inclusiveness, and collective progress.

He also called on executives, stakeholders, and members of the union to support his administration in building a stronger and more impactful organisation that would continue to uphold the values and aspirations of the Ilorin Emirate.

According to him, the success of the union would depend on the collective commitment of all members to its vision and objectives.

“I firmly believe that with unity, dedication, and the guidance of Almighty Allah, we shall achieve remarkable success and elevate our union to greater heights,” he stated.

The newly elected president further appealed for prayers, cooperation, and unwavering support from members as his administration begins its mandate.

The election also produced other national officers who will serve alongside Awola in steering the affairs of the students’ body.

Among those elected are Abdulganiyu Abdullateef Ibn Madi as Public Relations Officer II; Sodiq Orire Walliyillahi as Deputy Senate Clerk; Hammed Yusuf Olasheu as Chief Whip; and Abdulrasaq Simbiat Tomiwa as Director of Finance.

Others include Abdulkareem Fatimah Oluwatoyin as Welfare Director; Ibraheem Nafiu Olamilekan as Vice President (Administration); Hassan Sidiqat Abeni as Senate Clerk; Sulyman Omotosho Salaudeen as Public Relations Officer I; and Jamiu Samiha Ayomide as Director-General.

Also elected were Lukman Opeyemi Ibrahim as Vice President (Special Duties), Bakare Lateefat Ayomikun as Auditor-General, Imam Elesinla Issa Kayode as Deputy Senate President, Abdul Rasheed Aliu Damilola as Social Director II, and Abdulganiyu Mudashiru Abiodun Amus as Sports Director.

The election marks the beginning of a new chapter for the Ilorin Emirate Students Union, with members expressing optimism that the new leadership will consolidate on past achievements and drive initiatives aimed at enhancing students’ welfare, representation, and development.
