The last week of February every year is designated as National Eating Disorders Awareness week. Eating disorders are behavioral conditions that are characterized by severe disturbances in eating patterns which are usually associated with distorted and distressing thoughts and emotions.

Eating disorders include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, avoidant restrictive food intake disorder, other specified feeding and eating disorder, pica and rumination disorder. These conditions can very severely affect, physical, psychological and social function. Behaviors associated with eating disorders including restrictive eating or avoidance of certain foods, binge eating, purging by vomiting or laxative misuse or compulsive exercise.

This year the theme for Eating Disorder Awareness Week is “It’s Time for Change”. The focus is on the lived experiences of people with eating disorders and on educating others about these disorders.

You can be a part of this move by showing support to people around you that are living with these disorders, by getting informed and by participating in awareness programs in your community.
