Imo Govt demolishes shanties harbouring criminals

The Imo State Government has intensified actions against criminal elements who engage in pick-pocketing and other related crimes against unsuspecting members of the public as it demolished some shanties allegedly used by the criminals.

The move followed cases of suspected robbery, ranging from snatching of handsets and bags within Owerri, the state capital and environs.

Addressing journalists on the development, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Monitoring and Compliance, Nze Chinasa Nwaneri, said the action became necessary following resurfacing of shanties earlier demolished at Avu Junction in Owerri West LGA.

He said that his office received intelligence reports that some of the makeshift structures earlier pulled down had been quickly rebuilt and were once again being used as criminal hideouts.

Nwaneri narrated that on their arrival at the area that his team met shanties which were formerly cleared.

Our correspondent reports that security operatives who accompanied the enforcement team also recovered arms and other dangerous weapons, which were immediately handed over to the relevant authorities.

The Avu Junction axis, situated behind the correctional facility, according to our correspondent, has been identified in recent weeks as a dangerous area where criminal elements converged.

Residents, who witnessed the operation, expressed gratitude to the state government for what they described as sustained commitment to making their environment safe.

Nwaneri reaffirmed that Governor Hope Uzodinma’s administration will not relent until all criminal hideouts across the State are dismantled.

He added that the governor has given directives that there must be no room for criminals in the State.

Nwaneri pointed out that there will be similar follow-up actions at other identified black spots to ensure criminals are permanently denied any operational base in the state.

Why drama, controversies follow me – Cardi B after pregnancy announcement

Controversial American rapper, Cardi B has claimed that she is not a fan of controversy and drama but they keep following her due to her personality.

Cardi B, who recently sparked controversy after announcing that she is pregnant and having a baby with her boyfriend, NFL star Stefon Diggs amid her ongoing divorce case with her husband, rapper Offset, claimed she was being targeted by the media.

She, however, admitted that her outspoken nature and aura also fuels drama and controversies.

“I didn’t think I was that much drama. When I was in high school and I was voted most dramatic in my high school yearbook, I was surprised. I don’t like drama, it just follows me. Sometimes, certain things just followed certain people,” Cardi B tells CBS.

“When you have like a big personality like me or when you have a mouth like me or whatever aura that I give, it [drama] will follow you because it makes you like an easier target. I don’t like drama. It stresses me.

Joint security operatives destroy criminals’ hideouts in Imo

Joint security operatives in Imo State have destroyed some strongholds of criminal elements terrorizing the State, and recovered various dangerous weapons.

The joint security operation was made up of the Police, Military and Department of Security Service, DSS.

The team smashed dangerous locations harbouring criminal elements within the axis of Ezioha in Mbaitoli LGA and Umuele, Ubuakpu and Amakor in Njaba LGA.

The spokesperson of the State Police Command, DSP Henry Okoye gave the hint in a press statement as heads of the various security agencies paid an operational visit to the various joint security outlets to boost their morale.

Okoye stated that during the ongoing operations, some identified terrorists’ camps within the areas were successfully dismantled.

He stated that in the course of the encounter, several terrorists were neutralized, while some suspects were arrested for further investigation as others escaped with bullet wounds.

The Command’s spokesperson revealed that exhibits recovered from the camps included a large cache of arms and ammunition, while Improvised Explosive Devices, IEDs, were safely detonated by the Joint Explosive Ordnance Disposal, EOD, team, alongside other incriminating items.

“The high-powered visit was aimed at boosting the morale of the operatives, assessing the progress of the mission, and reaffirming the united resolve of security agencies to restore peace and security across the State,” he stated.

The Chief Security Heads, in their separate remarks, commended the gallant efforts of the operatives, noting their professionalism, discipline, and resilience in confronting terrorism and other violent crimes.

NAPTIP busts child trafficking ring, rescues 8 stolen children

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, NAPTIP, has rescued eight children suspected to have been stolen from Kano and other northern states and trafficked to the South–South and South–East regions by a notorious interstate child trafficking syndicate.

The rescued children, said to be aged between two and 10 years, were reportedly found in a privately owned orphanage run by a top executive of the Association of Orphanage Operators in Nigeria.

NAPTIP said more than 70 children, including 15 newborns, were discovered at the facility, confirming that only eight were identified as missing children from Kano.

The operation was carried out with the support of the Anambra State Command of the Department of State Services, DSS; the Nigeria Police, Delta Command; and the Kano State Ministry of Women Affairs, with the active involvement of civil society organisations and distressed parents.

The Director-General of NAPTIP, Dr Binta Bello, while speaking on the operation, decried what she described as the “unwholesome activities” of some orphanages in the country.

Bello stated that said the breakthrough followed years of lamentations by parents in Kano and neighbouring states, who, as far back as 2017, had raised alarm over syndicates luring children between the ages of two and 10 from schools, markets and neighbourhoods.

She recalled that in December 2022, a Kano-based NGO, Protection Against the Abduction and Missing of Our Children, PATAMOOC, petitioned NAPTIP on behalf of more than 200 affected parents.

“We, the parents, are in serious pain. Some of us are already hospitalised, while others have passed away due to the shock of losing our children and the continuous uncertainty of waiting daily for news — whether they will be found dead or alive,” she said.
