He was only 41 when a brain aneurysm suddenly struck, ending his life before he could see where his rising career would take him.

Gregory McKinney.
1998.

Gregory McKinney was born on February 7, 1957, in Los Angeles, California.

Before becoming known as an actor, he served in the U.S. Air Force and later worked in law enforcement.

He eventually turned toward acting and began building a career in film and television.

His credits included Beverly Hills Cop III, Money Train, Mortal Kombat, Eraser and Recoil.

He was especially remembered for playing Jax Briggs in Mortal Kombat, bringing the character to life in the 1995 film.

McKinney also appeared on television, with roles in shows including Babylon 5, Pacific Blue and Seven Days.

By the late 1990s, his career was still moving forward.

He was taking on new roles and continuing to work in Hollywood.

Then, in 1998, everything suddenly stopped.

McKinney died in Los Angeles from a brain aneurysm at only 41 years old.

There was no long career behind him to look back on.

There were still years ahead of him.

More roles he could have played.
More stories he could have told.

Born Malik Isaac Taylor on November 20, 1970, Phife Dawg grew up in Queens, New York.

Alongside Q-Tip, Ali Shaheed Muhammad and Jarobi White, he became one of the founding members of A Tribe Called Quest.

The group helped change hip-hop in the early 1990s.

Their music blended sharp rhymes with jazz-inspired production, creating a sound that became deeply influential.

Phife was known for his energetic delivery and playful personality.

He became one of the voices that made A Tribe Called Quest unforgettable.

But behind the music, he was fighting serious health problems.

Phife had lived with diabetes for years.

In 2008, he received a kidney transplant, but his health continued to be a major challenge. The disease eventually contributed to complications that affected his final years.

Then came 2016.

A Tribe Called Quest had reunited, and Phife was part of the work that would become the group’s final album, We Got It from Here… Thank You 4 Your Service.

He would not live to see its release.

On March 22, 2016, Phife Dawg died at his home in Contra Costa County, California, at 45. His death was attributed to complications related to diabetes.

The group continued without him, but never tried to replace him.

When they performed after his death, his presence remained on stage through his recorded voice and his image.

Minutes later, Patrick Dorismond was fighting for his life.
The 26-year-old father never made it home.
2000.

New York City, New York.

Patrick Dorismond was 26 years old.

He worked as a security guard and was the father of two children. He was trying to live a normal life in New York City.

On March 16, 2000, Dorismond was standing outside a Manhattan bar with a friend.

An undercover officer approached him during a drug investigation and asked where he could buy ma*****na.

Dorismond became angry, and a struggle followed.

During the struggle, Officer Anthony Vasquez fired his gun.

Dorismond was shot in the chest and rushed to the hospital.

He died shortly afterward.

No drugs were found on him.

His death quickly caused anger across New York. Patrick was the third Black man killed by New York police in just over a year, following the deaths of Amadou Diallo and Malcolm Ferguson.

Thousands of people attended his funeral, and protests followed.

A grand jury later chose not to indict the officer, ruling the shooting accidental.

But for Patrick’s family, the decision could never change the loss.

He was a father.

A son.

A 26-year-old man with a life still ahead of him.

Then one night in Manhattan changed everything.

She even used oxygen when she went in for her final film role.
Then, at 78, Novella Nelson was gone.
2017.

Brooklyn, New York.

Novella Nelson was 78 years old.

Born in Brooklyn, Nelson first studied biochemistry at Brooklyn College before changing her path and studying theater. She later trained at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts.

Her career began on the New York stage in the 1960s.

She became known for her strong stage work and later appeared on Broadway in Purlie, Caesar and Cleopatra, and The Little Foxes. She also directed plays and worked with New York’s Public Theater.

Her work eventually reached television and film.

She appeared in The Cotton Club, Clockers, The Devil’s Advocate, A Perfect Murder, The Ten, and Antwone Fisher. She also had roles on shows including Law & Order, The West Wing, S*x and the City, and Oz.

But Nelson never left the theater behind.

She continued performing, directing, writing, and supporting Black theater for decades.

Even when her health was getting worse, she kept working.

In 2016, she auditioned for what became her final film, You Were Never Really Here. She needed oxygen at the audition, but director Lynne Ramsay still gave her the role. Nelson was proud to appear on screen while living with a disability.

Then came August 31, 2017.

Novella Nelson died in Brooklyn at 78. Her daughter said the cause was cancer.

She had spent more than five decades acting, singing, directing, and helping build theater.

She never stopped working simply because she became older or her health became harder.

Even near the end, she still wanted to perform.

She was gone before the world even knew she was in her final hours.

Debra Byrd.

On March 5, 2024, Debra Byrd died in Los Angeles at 72. Her cause of death was never publicly disclosed.

For decades, Byrd worked behind the scenes, helping singers become better performers.

She began her music career as a singer and later performed with Barry Manilow’s backing group, Lady Flash. She also worked with artists including Bob Dylan and appeared on Broadway.

Then television introduced her to millions.

Byrd became a vocal coach on American Idol, where she worked with contestants across ten seasons. She helped guide singers including Jennifer Hudson, Kelly Clarkson, Fantasia Barrino, Clay Aiken and Carrie Underwood.

She later worked with Canadian Idol, The Voice and other music programs.

Jennifer Hudson remembered Byrd as someone who encouraged and supported singers from the beginning. Barry Manilow also mourned the longtime friend and musical collaborator.

Debra Byrd spent much of her life helping other people find their voices.

When she died, she left behind a legacy that could still be heard through the many singers she helped.

A flash gr***de went off, and minutes later Alberta Spruill was struggling to breathe.
She was rushed to the hospital, but the 57-year-old city worker never made it home.
2003.

Harlem, New York.

Alberta Spruill was 57 years old.

On May 16, 2003, Spruill was getting ready for work in her Harlem apartment. She had worked for New York City for 29 years.

That morning, police came to her building looking for a suspected drug dealer. But they had the wrong apartment.

They broke down Spruill’s door and set off a flash gr***de inside. She was then handcuffed while officers realized they had made a terrible mistake.

Spruill had a heart condition.

Minutes later, she went into cardiac arrest while being taken to Harlem Hospital. She died that morning.

The medical examiner later ruled that the police raid had caused or worsened the fatal heart attack and classified her death as a homicide.

The mistake caused anger across Harlem.

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly called her death a tragedy. An internal investigation later found serious problems with how the raid had been planned and carried out.

But none of it could bring Alberta back.

She had been getting ready for an ordinary day at work.

Instead, the wrong apartment was raided, and her life ended before she could leave for work.

She wanted to document her thoughts, her travels, and the people she met.

Ronald was part of the small group traveling with her.

He also helped with filming during the trip.

For several weeks, cameras recorded everyday moments.

Nobody knew those recordings would become the final days of Lisa's life.

Then gunshots rang out, and the 15-year-old was hit.
Just days earlier, she had been performing at the presidential inauguration.

Chicago, Illinois.

Hadiya Pendleton was only 15 years old.

She was an honor student at King College Prep High School and a talented majorette. Her friends knew her as a kind girl who made people feel welcome.

In January 2013, Hadiya and her classmates traveled to Washington, D.C., to perform during President Barack Obama’s second inauguration.

It was a proud moment for her family.

She had stood in Washington and performed for the country.

Then, only about a week later, everything changed.

On January 29, 2013, Hadiya was in a Chicago park with friends after school when she was shot and killed.

She was only 15.

The news shocked the country.

President Obama later spoke about Hadiya during his State of the Union address. He remembered that she had performed at his inauguration only weeks before her death.

First Lady Michelle Obama also attended Hadiya’s funeral.

Her death became part of a larger conversation about young lives lost to gun violence.

But behind all the speeches was a 15-year-old girl who had dreams, friends, family, and so much life ahead of her.

She had just performed for her country.

She should have had many more years to come.

Just days earlier, the Heisman winner had been talking about his future.
Then, at only 42, Rashaan Salaam was gone.
2016.

Boulder, Colorado.

Rashaan Salaam was 42 years old.

Born on September 8, 1974, Salaam became one of the greatest running backs in University of Colorado history.

Then came 1994.

He rushed for 2,055 yards and 24 touchdowns, leading Colorado to an 11–1 season and becoming the school’s first Heisman Trophy winner.

His extraordinary season also earned him the Walter Camp Award and the Doak Walker Award.

The Chicago Bears selected him 21st overall in the 1995 NFL Draft.

As a rookie, he rushed for 1,074 yards and 10 touchdowns, showing why so much had been expected of him.

But injuries and other struggles eventually made his professional career difficult. He later played in the Canadian Football League and the XFL before his football career came to an end.

He remained connected to Colorado and was remembered by friends as a warm and generous person.

Then came December 5, 2016.

Salaam was found dead in Boulder, near the University of Colorado campus where he had become a football legend.

He was only 42.

The Boulder County Coroner later ruled his death a su***de.

His death shocked the football community.

Years earlier, he had stood at the center of college football’s biggest stage, holding the Heisman Trophy and looking toward a future that seemed limitless.

But his story ended far differently than anyone could have imagined.

After months of fighting the disease, his health began to fail.
Then, one of soul music’s most powerful voices was gone at 59.
2010.

Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania.

Teddy Pendergrass was 59 years old.

Born on March 26, 1950, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Theodore DeReese Pendergrass grew up surrounded by music. He began singing in church and later became the lead singer of Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes.

In the 1970s, his deep and powerful voice helped make songs like “If You Don’t Know Me by Now” and “The Love I Lost” major hits.

Then he stepped out on his own.

Pendergrass launched a hugely successful solo career, becoming one of the biggest R&B stars of his generation. His albums connected with audiences through powerful vocals, emotional performances, and songs about love and relationships.

But in 1982, his life changed forever.

A serious car accident left Pendergrass paralyzed from the chest down. He would never walk again.

But he refused to let that end his career.

He returned to recording and performing, releasing new music and continuing to connect with his fans. In 1985, he made an emotional return to the stage at the Live Aid concert in Philadelphia.

He later became an advocate for people with spinal cord injuries and worked to raise awareness about accessibility and independence.

Then came 2009.

Pendergrass was diagnosed with colon cancer and underwent surgery. His health continued to decline over the following months.

On January 13, 2010, Teddy Pendergrass died at Bryn Mawr Hospital in Pennsylvania from complications of colon cancer.

He was 59.

His life had been marked by extraordinary success, a devastating accident, and an even more extraordinary comeback.

He lost the ability to walk.

But he never lost his voice.
