Taraba Sack Task Force Faces Resistance in Mutum Biyu, Records Low Compliance in Garba Chede
The ongoing statewide sensitization and enforcement tour of the Taraba Sack Task Force recorded mixed reactions in Garba Chede, Bali Local Government Area, and Mutum Biyu in Gassol Local Government Area, as officials continued efforts to promote the use of the state-approved Taraba Sack for agricultural produce packaging.
The exercise was led by the Chairman of the Task Force, Mr. Williams Ezekiel Kagal, alongside the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Trade and Commerce, Dr. Isa Hamza Mohammad, who have been moving across communities to engage directly with farmers, traders, and market leaders on the importance of standardizing produce packaging in Taraba State.
In Garba Chede, the team observed a low level of compliance with the government directive, as many traders were yet to fully adopt the approved sacks. Despite the slow response, the task force continued its sensitization campaign, explaining that the initiative is aimed at improving the quality and presentation of agricultural produce, strengthening market organization, and creating better identity for products coming from Taraba State.
The situation in Mutum Biyu was more difficult, as tension interrupted the sensitization exercise during an engagement with traders at the market.
While addressing traders on the objectives and benefits of the initiative, the Chairman of the Task Force, Mr. Williams Ezekiel Kagal, was suddenly interrupted when some youths disrupted the exercise, creating confusion and tension within the market environment. Security personnel attached to the team quickly intervened and restored calm before the situation escalated further.
Following the interruption, the exercise in Mutum Biyu was suspended as the atmosphere was no longer suitable for the engagement to continue.
Speaking after the incident, Mr. Williams Ezekiel Kagal expressed disappointment over the development, particularly the attitude of some market leaders, which he said contributed to the tension witnessed during the exercise. He maintained that the Taraba Sack initiative is a government-approved policy introduced to improve agricultural packaging standards, support farmers and traders, and strengthen agricultural trade across the state.
The incident was later reported to the Divisional Police Officer in Gassol Local Government Area, SP Timothy N. Mainasara, who reaffirmed that the Taraba Sack policy remains an executive order of the Taraba State Government and must be complied with by all traders and market operators.
The DPO also assured the task force of necessary action against activities capable of disrupting the implementation of the government directive, while calling for cooperation from members of the public.
Despite the challenges recorded during the visit, the task force reaffirmed its commitment to continuing sensitization and enforcement across other parts of the state as efforts intensify to strengthen compliance and improve agricultural marketing standards in Taraba State.
