*TOPIC: WHO TAKES THE CREDIT FOR YOUR SUCCESS?

David rose from being a fugitive to an influential King. He gives all the credit to the Lord: "It is God who arms me with strength and keeps my way secure. He makes my feet like the feet of a deer...He trains my hands for battle..." (vs.32-36). It is God that gives kings victory. But secular politicians ascribe their successes to human beings.

In Nigeria, four opposition parties had formed a coalition to challenge the then ruling PDP during the Goodluck Jonathan administration. The coalition, which came to be known as the APC, included ACN, APGA, ANPP and CPC. Lai Mohammed, who later became information minister, was quoted to have said: "We are very confident that with this merger, it's a matter of time before you see the total defeat of the PDP as a result of this merger". And similar coalition is in place to challenge Bola Tinubu.

Apparently, God was and is not in the equation but the power of the coalition.

*QUESTION: Do you attribute your success to God or other mundane forces?

*PRAYER: Help me to attribute all of my successes and victories to You and You alone, in Jesus' name. Amen!

TEXT: PSALM 18:16-29
TOPIC: HE RESCUED ME FROM A POWERFUL ENEMY

It is bad enough when someone hates you. But it is even worse if your enemies are powerful and can use their power to finish you. That was the situation in which David found himself. He described his enemy as strong and hateful. And even though he admitted that the enemy was too mighty for him, he was not too strong for God vanquish.

Just as God came down to rescue His people from the powerful Egyptians (Exodus 3:7-8), be rest assured that He can still rescue you from the claws of the mighty, He is the power of the powerless.

If we can contextualise Exodus 3:7-8, it will read like this: "The LORD said, 'I have indeed seen the state of great physical and mental distress of my people in Nigeria, Africa and the entire globe, I have heard them crying out because of their corrupt leaders, and I am concerned about their suffering, so I have come down to rescue them from the hands of their corrupt politicians.'"

Note, however, that the Psalmist gives reasons for the rescue: "because the LORD delighted in me" (18:19). So, there is a price tag for divine intervention.

QUESTION:
Have you ever used your power to remove food from someone's mouth for no justifiable reason?

PRAYER:
Thank You, dear Lord, for being the power of the powerless and the defender of the widows and orphans.

THURSDAY, 17TH JULY
TOPIC: ENDURING TWENTY YEARS OF HATRED
TEXT: PSALM 18:1-15

The Bible says: "Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry" (Ephesians 4:26). But King Saul kept malice, bitterness and intense hatred towards David for twenty long years.

In those twenty years, David kept moving from one place to another, often hiding in the crevasses of rocks and the earth's craters. He became a wanderer by necessity.

As he sang this Psalm, David must have remembered the way God had continually intervened on his behalf.

The memories prompted him to burst into tears of joy as he declared: "I love you, O Lord, my strength."

David's close affinity with God made him see Him as his rock, fortress, deliverer, shield, horn of salvation and refuge.

A book can be written on each of the seven facets of God that David experienced.

Some people experience God as horn of salvation, some as their shield, some as their rock, etc.

We too can identify with David and look for vivid contemporary images to describe our experience of God. You may see God as your Iron Dome, bunker, bulletproof vest, missile interceptor, etc.

*QUESTION:* Have you been pursuing an innocent person for no reason or has someone made you a fugitive needlessly?

*PRAYER:* Dear Lord, You are my umbrella, my bulletproof vest, my missile defence system and my shelter when the storm breaks over me.

TEXT: PSALM 17:1-15
TOPIC: CAN YOU WITHSTAND GOD'S PROBE?

Psalm 17 was written from the ashes of fourth degree slander when the Psalmist's life was in danger.

In his prayers, he asked for justice, deliverance and condemnation of those who falsely accused him of wrongdoing.

He activated his prayers with these three synonyms of verbs addressed to the Lord: "hear me, listen, and give ear..."

These synonyms showcase David's assurance and confidence that God will hear and answer his prayers because he did not cherish sin in his heart.

The Psalmist had the confidence to ask God to probe, examine and test his heart.

He assured him that evil plans bribery, deceitful lips and keeping company of violent people would not be found lurking in his heart.

In other words, David affirmed that affirmed the confidence that his life was an open book which God could examine and find no guilt therein.

QUESTION:
Can you withstand God's probe?

PRAYER:
Dear Lord, I don't have the courage to invite You to inspect my heart. I am afraid You might discover an abominable content. Please have mercy on me, in Jesus' name. Amen.

TEXT: PSALM 16:1-11
TOPIC: THOSE WHO RUN AFTER OTHER GODS WILL SUFFER

King David reflects on his relationships with God as his refuge, as his Lord, his treasured possession and his only God.

He contrasts his relationships with God with that of others who run after other gods and pour...

Christians in Africa compromise their testimonies by running after other gods through wearing charms, amulets, joining secrets societies and cults.

Christians should adopt the stance of the Psalmist by making a clear distinction between the unadulterated gospel and syncretism, that is, combining godless and demonic cultures with Christianity which we often see during funeral rites and marriage ceremonies.

In most African cultures, before or during the burial of relations, we engage in some questionable demonic rituals that are not in tandem with the gospel.

Prophet Elijah might want to ask typical syncretic African Christians: "How long will you waver between two opinions? If the Lord is God follow him; but if Baal is God follow him" (1 Kings 18:21).

QUESTION:
For how long will you continue to waver between demonic activities and Christianity?

PRAYER:
Dear Lord, purge me of all demonic and idolatrous traditions that paralyse my walk with You, in Jesus' name. Amen.

TEXT: PSALM: 15:1-5
TOPIC: SUBMIT YOUR CURRICULUM VITAE

PSALM: 15:1-5 NIV

1:Lord, who may dwell in your sacred tent? Who may live on your holy mountain?

2:The one whose walk is blameless, who does what is righteous, who speaks the truth from their heart;

3:whose tongue utters no slander, who does no wrong to a neighbor, and casts no slur on others;

4:who despises a vile person but honors those who fear the Lord; who keeps an oath even when it hurts, and does not change their mind;

5:who lends money to the poor without interest; who does not accept a bribe against the innocent. Whoever does these things will never be shaken.

SUBMIT YOUR CURRICULUM VITAE

A Curriculum Vitae, or CV, is a document that job applicants use to showcase their academic and professional accomplishments.

Psalm 15 begins with an advertisement for members of the public to apply for the position of “priesthood of all believers” whose job is to dwell on God’s holy mountain, that is, the presence of God.

David outlines twelve qualifications for the job. Take a closer look at the list and you will notice that the focus is not on religious rituals but one’s relationship with their neighbour and with God.

The Church in Africa often suffers because those attending church fail to see the connection between their worship and their daily lives and between their communion in the church and the division that exists within society. Thus, worship becomes a mere routine, unaccompanied by deep reflection.

QUESTION: Do you possess the requirements outlined in Psalm 15?

PRAYER: Please Lord, admit me into Your school of discipleship to obtain the requisite qualifications for this job, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

TEXT: PSALM 12:1-8
TOPIC: A DISTRESS CALL.

The Psalmist opens with a 119 distress call: "Help, Lord, for no one is faithful anymore; those who are loyal have vanished from the human race. Everyone lies to their neighbours....". Psalm 12 expresses what it is like to live in a Christian organization where the foundations have been destroyed. It describes a situation very close to what obtains in African churches today where there is a scarcity of godly and faithful models and leaders whose words can be trusted.

Isaiah also made that emergency call when he said, "The righteous perish, and no one takes it to heart; the devout are taken away...." (Isaiah 57:1-2). During the formative years of African churches, it's leaders who were graduates of the vernacular Bible training schools are now gone. We are now under the sophisticated leadership of seasoned theologians. Does this call for celebration?

QUESTION:
Don't you think it is time to dial God's emergency number?

PRAYER:
Help, Lord, help, Lord, help, Lord!

THURSDAY, 10 JULY
TEXT: PSALM 11:1–7
TOPIC: WHEN THE FOUNDATIONS ARE BEING DESTROYED, WHAT CAN THE RIGHTEOUS DO?

Psalm 11 was written at a time when the Psalmist was being advised to abandon his struggles for what was right because righteousness was no longer popular.

He was tempted by others into believing that things were so bad that there was no point in fighting for righteousness. Detractors argued that, because the righteous could not reverse the situation, the best thing to do is to avoid confrontation by retreating to a safe place.

Psalm 11:3 is the fulcrum of the entire chapter as it warns of catastrophic results when the fundamental principles of righteousness are destroyed with impunity, especially by the revered custodians of societal values as pointed out in Jeremiah 8:10: "...From the least to the greatest, all are greedy for gain, prophets and priests alike all practice deceit...the prophets follow an evil course and use their power unjustly."

The Psalmist ends with an ultimate expression of confidence that in God's economy, righteousness is not determined by the majority vote but by His standards.

QUESTION:
Have you ever been discouraged by the attitudes of those who should be, especially our spiritual leaders?

PRAYER:
Dear Father, do not allow our foundation to be destroyed, in Jesus' name. Amen.

TEXT: PSALM 10:12-18
TOPIC: GOD SEES THE TROUBLES OF THE AFFLICTED

PSALM 10:12-18 NIV

11:Arise, Lord! Lift up your hand, O God. Do not forget the helpless.

13:Why does the wicked man revile God? Why does he say to himself, “He won’t call me to account”?

14:But you, God, see the trouble of the afflicted; you consider their grief and take it in hand. The victims commit themselves to you; you are the helper of the fatherless.

15:Break the arm of the wicked man; call the evildoer to account for his wickedness that would not otherwise be found out.

16:The Lord is King for ever and ever; the nations will perish from his land.

17:You, Lord, hear the desire of the afflicted; you encourage them, and you listen to their cry,

18:defending the fatherless and the oppressed, so that mere earthly mortals will never again strike terror.

GOD SEES THE TROUBLES OF THE AFFLICTED

One popular fallacious belief amongst evil-doers who revile God is that God never sees their wickedness.

They further think that God won't call them to account for their crimes against the powerless.

The Psalmist assures victims of oppression that God sees, hears and knows the evil being meted out to them and the weak.

God demonstrated in very clear terms in Exodus 3:7 that He sees and hears the cries of the vulnerable.

He expressed Himself in an anthropomorphic language, that is, a language that is associated with our human senses, thus: "I have seen, I have heard and I am concerned about their suffering."

Therefore, the greatest fallacy is for you to deceive yourself that He who created the five senses does not experience the senses He created. Read Psalm 93:7–11.

QUESTION: Have you ever committed a sin behind a closed door in a dark room thinking that even God cannot see you?

PRAYER: God, I have many skeletons in my cupboard, thinking that they are securely hidden. Please forgive me, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

TUESDAY, 8 JULY
TEXT: PSALM 10:1-11
TOPIC: THE TOUGHEST QUESTION

Here, the psalmist opens with this common question humanity asks in times of trouble: "Where is God?" He appears to be in a state of despair and disappointment as he contrasts his plight with the apparent success of the wicked.

This theological conundrum of the prosperity of the wicked has turned many people into atheists. This same question puzzled the authors of the book of Job and Psalm 73.

We would like to live in a world where high morals would guarantee the success and happiness of all. But as the psalmist reminds us, this is not always the case. However, our God is a just King and is keeping account of evil.

The Bible, in Revelation 22:11 gives this assurance: "Let the one who does wrong continue to do wrong. Let the vile; continue to be vile; let the one who does right continue to do right; and let the holy person continue to be a holy person continue to be holy.

Look, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give each person according to what they have done" (Rev. 22:11-12).

QUESTION:
Are you disturbed by what appears to be the success of the wicked?

PRAYER:
I am comforted, dear Lord, by the fact that one day, You will judge and reward every deed with justice.

TEXT: PSALM 9:11-20
TOPIC: GOD WILL NEVER FORGET THE POOR

Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) carried out a survey in collaboration with the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) and the Oxford Poverty and Human Initiative (OPHI) across the 36 states of Nigeria in 2022.

It revealed that 63% of Nigerians, representing 133 million people, are multidimensionally poor. It also revealed that 65% of the poor, that is, 86 million people, live in the north while 35%, representing 47 million people, live in the south.

What is even more worrisome is that, according to the survey, the widening gap between the majority poor and the minority rich is largely exacerbated by political, religious and moral corruption in Nigeria. This means that the Church was also indicted.

The psalmist reminds his readers that God is not an absentee landlord Who is helplessly watching and doing nothing.

The psalmist comforts us that God, Who avenges blood, doesn't ignore the cries of the afflicted and will never forget the needy. The hope of the afflicted should never perish as God will strike the corrupt and wicked with terror.

QUESTION:
When God judges political, religious and moral corruption, will you come out clean?

PRAYER:
Dear Lord, forgive my sin of avarice and greed in Jesus' name. Amen.
