JOS MAIN MARKET AUTHORITY ENDS 16 YEARS OF WATER SCARCITY AS COMMISSIONER COMMISSIONS THREE BOREHOLES AT KABONG SATELLITE MARKET

Jos, Plateau State | July 13, 2026

A new chapter was written in the history of Kabong Satellite Market on Monday as the Honourable Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Plateau State, Hon. Mohammed Nyalum, officially commissioned three deep boreholes constructed by the Jos Main Market Authority, bringing to an end over sixteen years of water scarcity in the market.

The commissioning ceremony, at which the Honourable Commissioner served as the Special Guest of Honour, attracted directors from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, market union leaders, representatives of government agencies, traders, and other distinguished guests.

The project was initiated and executed under the leadership of the General Manager of the Jos Main Market Authority, Engr. Mangna Yusuf Wamyil, as part of ongoing efforts to improve infrastructure and create a more conducive environment for commercial activities within the market.

In his welcome address, Engr. Mangna Wamyil described the event as a historic milestone, noting that since Kabong Satellite Market was commissioned in 2010, traders had operated without a reliable source of water. He said the successful completion of the three boreholes was the fulfilment of a long-standing need that would significantly improve sanitation, public health, and the overall business environment within the market.

The General Manager paid glowing tribute to the Executive Governor of Plateau State, His Excellency, Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, for his visionary leadership and commitment to improving the welfare of the people. He stated that the Governor's support made it possible for the Authority to deliver a project that will positively impact thousands of traders and residents who depend on the market daily.

Speaking after commissioning the project, the Honourable Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Hon. Mohammed Nyalum, conveyed the goodwill of Governor Caleb Mutfwang to the traders and reaffirmed the administration's commitment to strengthening commerce and improving market infrastructure across the state. He assured stakeholders that the present administration would continue to work closely with market communities to promote economic growth and improve the ease of doing business.

The Commissioner further urged traders to continue supporting government initiatives and disclosed that plans were underway to remodel Kabong Satellite Market into a modern market comparable to leading markets within and outside Plateau State.

Traders and market stakeholders, who received the project with excitement and appreciation, described the commissioning as the end of many years of hardship caused by the absence of potable water. They expressed profound gratitude to Governor Caleb Mutfwang for responding to their long-standing plight, appreciated the Honourable Commissioner for his support, and commended the General Manager of the Jos Main Market Authority for his purposeful leadership and dedication to delivering impactful projects. They also pledged their continued cooperation and support for the policies and programmes of the Plateau State Government.

Governor Mutfwang Launches Distribution of 500 Trailers of Subsidized Fertilizer for Farmers in Plateau

Court Adjourns Jos North LGA Appeal to Set Aside Indigeneship Judgment to October 29

The Plateau State High Court has adjourned until October 29, 2026, the appeal by Jos North Local Government Area seeking to set aside the judgment on indigeneship delivered on June 9.

The court had previously delivered a default judgment because Jos North Local Government Council failed to appear during the proceedings.

Garba Pwul, SAN, counsel to Jos North Local Government and the indigenous tribes, objected to the respondents being represented by new lawyers who were not originally on record as counsel for Fatima Akawu.

Edward Pwajok, SAN, explained that all parties were present in court today, noting that the arguments centered on court rules.

According to the applicants—Jos North LGA and the three indigenous tribes (Berom, Afizere and Anaguta) —there must be a formal application filed to determine who can legally serve as counsel in the matter.

The applicants described Ms. Akawu’s decision to be represented by a new legal team without prior notice as a legal "ambush" that is not backed by law.

After listening to all arguments, the court adjourned the matter to October 29 for a ruling on the representation issue, after which the substantive case is expected to proceed.

Meanwhile, Yakubu H., SAN, representing Baba Akawu, remarked that Jos North Local Government is simply applying to set aside a judgment previously delivered in the respondents' favour.

He explained that the respondents decided to separate their legal teams because they are two distinct parties, that is; Fatima Akawu and her Father, Baba Alhaji Akawu, which is their constitutional right.

He noted that since the lawyers for Jos North objected to this move, the court rightly adjourned until October 29 to rule on the matter.
