Prof. Nentawe Participates in Joint EU-Nigeria Assessment Visit on Rising Child Malnutrition

In response to the alarming increase in cases of severe acute malnutrition among children in Nigeria, the Honourable Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, joined the European Union Ambassador to Nigeria on a joint on-the-spot assessment visit to Sokoto State.

The delegation was warmly received by the Executive Governor of Sokoto State, His Excellency, Dr. Ahmed Aliyu. During the visit, the Governor expressed appreciation for the federal government's and European Union's commitment to addressing the nutrition crisis affecting vulnerable children in the state.

According to current national estimates, over 3.5 million children under the age of five are at risk of severe acute malnutrition across Nigeria, making it a critical public health concern. The visit to Sokoto was aimed at evaluating the situation firsthand and initiating a coordinated, multi-sectoral response.

Prof. Nentawe noted the urgency of the crisis and reiterated the federal government’s commitment to strengthening collaboration with both local and international partners to provide timely and sustainable solutions. He emphasized that the Ministry, in partnership with the European Union and the Sokoto State Government, is working towards the implementation of a robust, life-saving nutrition response plan.

Key components of the planned intervention include:

1. Scaling up community-based management of acute malnutrition (CMAM)

2. Deployment of ready-to-use therapeutic food (RUTF) to treatment centres

3. Capacity building for health and nutrition personnel

4. Enhanced awareness campaigns on infant and young child feeding (IYCF)

5. Improved early detection and referral systems at the grassroots level

The Honourable Minister stressed that every Nigerian child deserves the opportunity to grow, thrive, and reach their full potential. He urged all stakeholders to act swiftly and decisively to reverse the current trend and ensure no child is left behind.

The assessment mission marks a critical step in galvanizing national and international action against child malnutrition in Nigeria.

OPEN LETTER TO HIS EXCELLENCY, GOVERNOR CALEB MANASSEH MUTFWANG
On the Raging Insecurity in Garga Area of Kanam Local Government Area

Your Excellency,

I write to you today not as a politician, nor as a critic, but as a broken-hearted son of the soil, bleeding silently with my people in the Garga Area of Kanam Local Government. This letter carries the pain, the cries, and the buried hopes of innocent Plateau citizens who now sleep in fear, or do not sleep at all.

Sir, Garga is dying slowly, yet loudly. Can you hear us?

We are under siege.
Bandits and terrorists have turned our villages into slaughterfields. Families are being wiped out. Children are growing up with trauma, and many will never know peace again. Our homes are being burned. Our farms, our only means of livelihood, are now occupied or laced with terror. Entire communities have been displaced. Entire generations are being erased.

And yet, we have not seen you.

Your Excellency, since assuming office, you have demonstrated leadership, empathy, and a swift response to security crises across the state, and we sincerely commend you for that. But we ask, with heavy hearts:
Why has Garga been left out?
What have we done to deserve this silence?
Are we not Plateau people too?
Is our blood less red?
Are our lives less worthy?

We are tired of being treated like we don’t exist.

The truth is this; when the Governor does not show up, the enemies feel stronger. And they are growing bolder. We have credible reports that these armed men are regrouping and receiving reinforcements from Zamfara, Katsina, Kebbi,Niger, and Sokoto. Their plan is not just to destroy Garga, they aim to overrun all of Kanam. And if Kanam falls, it will not stop there. It will spread like wildfire across the state.

Yes, we know you inherited this insecurity from a government that chose silence over action. But leadership is not about inheritance. It is about response. It is about courage. And we believe that you have the heart and the will to do what others failed to do.

Garga needs you, now, not tomorrow.

Our people no longer sleep peacefully. Movement is restricted from 5 p.m. to 10 a.m. because the night, and even part of the day, belongs to armed men. Our farmers can no longer access their lands. The few security personnel on ground are overstretched, underequipped, and demoralized. Yet they remain, still trying their best.

Your visit alone could save lives. It would restore hope. It would send a clear message, to victims and criminals alike, that Garga is not abandoned. Your presence would revive the morale of our security agents and give our people the strength to rise again.

We want to hear that you have called an emergency security meeting, not just for general insecurity but specifically for Kanam LGA. We want to hear that you’ve met with Mr. President, the National Security Adviser, the Chief of Defence Staff, and other relevant authorities, and that you’ve demanded a full military operation to flush out those who are destroying our communities.

Just last night, as I write this letter, criminals invaded Dungur, kidnapped two individuals, and attacked Shuwaka, where they seized phones and money from innocent villagers. Though they didn’t kill this time, they made their presence felt, firing shots in the air, spreading fear. Tomorrow, it may be worse. This is not just news. It is our reality.

This insecurity must end. We cannot continue to bury our people every day while the government remains distant. We cannot keep mourning in silence while those we voted for turn away.

Sir, Garga is not just another village. It is the pride of Jhar Chiefdom and the beating heart of Kanam. Ignoring our suffering is like ignoring the soul of Plateau State.

We are your people. We supported you. We believed in you. And we still do. But please, do not let Garga become your silence. Do not let history say you turned away when we needed you most.

You are now the father of all Plateau people, not by tribe, not by religion, not by party, but by divine mandate. And your legacy will not be measured by what you said, but by where you stood when your people were bleeding.

Please, let Garga feel your compassion.
Let Kanam feel your courage.
Let Plateau feel your justice.
And let the killers feel the strength of a government that refuses to remain silent in the face of evil.

With pain, urgency, and hope,

TARU SALIM DUGUB
A Concerned Citizen of Jhar Chiefdom, Kanam LGA

REJOINDER TO A BASELESS AND MALICIOUS OPEN LETTER: A REBUKE TO FACELESS “APC CONCERNED YOUTHS” OF WASE AND KANAM

I read with deep concern, but not surprise, the so-called “open letter” circulating on social media and credited to a group styling itself as APC Concerned Youths of Wase and Kanam Local Governments. Let me be clear and unequivocal from the outset: the said write-up is faceless, divisive, mischievous, and clearly not the position of any known organ, leadership, or legitimate forum of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Wase or Kanam. It is the handiwork of political merchants who seek to exploit humanitarian pain for political gain.

Ordinarily, I would have ignored such a desperate and pedestrian blackmail, but for the deliberate attempt to drag my name and that of our respected Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Prof. Hon. Nentawe Yilwatda, into a fabricated narrative of betrayal and neglect. This rejoinder serves to put the records straight and expose the lies for what they truly are—dangerous propaganda clothed in ethnic undertones and political manipulation.

FACTS, NOT FABRICATIONS

As the elected Member representing Pankshin/Kanke/Kanam Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, and as a son of Kanam, I am the most directly affected by the persistent attacks in parts of Garga District, particularly Kukawa and its neighboring villages. It is, therefore, illogical and dishonorable for anyone to suggest that I would sit idly while my people suffer. My heart bleeds daily with every report of loss. I have visited these communities repeatedly in the past and continue to provide both legislative and personal interventions, including raising the matter on the floor of the National Assembly. The records are there.

However, the current nature of the killings and kidnappings in Kanam—especially Garga axis—is unlike other crises in Plateau State. It requires serious security clearance for any physical visit. This is precisely why my earlier scheduled joint visit with the Hon Minister, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, was suspended on security advice. Let it be known publicly: the Minister and I planned to visit together, not separately. Any attempt to cast him in a bad light is a direct insult to me, the people of Kanam, and to the truth itself.

FEDERAL INTERVENTION IS UNDERWAY

It is worthy of mention that as a direct outcome of my legislative motion on the floor of the House, the Federal Government has initiated necessary steps for humanitarian intervention in the affected areas. I am also aware of the detailed plans being quietly but diligently worked on by the Hon Minister and his Ministry. Relief materials and support packages are being arranged—not on social media—but through official channels in line with due process. No genuine leader politicizes disaster or rushes to the media to announce every plan.

We have held strategic meetings with security agencies and humanitarian bodies. No matter the noise from faceless writers, we will not announce our moves prematurely until they yield results. Governance is not driven by drama, but by diligence.

ON THE CHARACTER OF PROF. NENTAWE YILWATDA

Let me state without ambiguity: Prof. Hon. Nentawe Yilwatda is a son of Kanam, and we in Kanam APC are exceedingly proud of his achievements, integrity, and commitment to the state and the nation. His appointment as Minister was a blessing to our people, and no faceless group will be allowed to cast unwarranted aspersions on his reputation.

His response to the humanitarian needs across the country, including in Plateau, has been commendable. If he went to Riyom, it was because the security conditions permitted it. He would have done same in Garga if the same was guaranteed.

CRISIS HAS NO POLITICAL AFFILIATION

Contrary to the misleading claims in the letter, humanitarian crises do not recognize political parties, tribal sentiments, or electoral support. To attempt to turn a humanitarian tragedy into a political blame game is shameful, inhumane, and un-Islamic. The victims are not only APC members; they are human beings, and their pain should not be weaponized.

FINAL WORD

Let me advise those who wrote or sponsored the said letter: do not attempt to create problems where none exists. You cannot love Wase and Kanam more than those of us whose souls are tied to the soil. You do not speak for the APC, for its youth, or for its elders. You speak only for your political frustration and desperation, and that will not be rewarded with recognition.

To the general public and my constituents, rest assured: we are doing everything possible to bring relief to our people. The Federal Government is acting. The Hon Minister is committed. I, your humble servant, will never relent.

Signed,
Rt. Hon. Yusuf Adamu Gagdi, Ph.D, OON

18th July, 2025

For Immediate Release

OFFICE OF THE SPECIAL ENVOY TO THE GOVERNOR OF PLATEAU STATE ON PEACE AND SECURITY

The recent attack that was unleashed by organised criminal group in Tahoo village of Riyom Local Government Area, where 27 innocent citizens lost their lives, represents one in a series of deaths against Nigerians, despite the presence of the military and other security agencies in the state, under the Special Task Force Operation Safe Haven (STF-OSH).

The attack was avoidable, given the early warning signs and intelligence reports that indicated an imminent threat to lives. The presence of security personnel with heavy equipment and checkpoints in close proximity to the attacked communities makes the tragic loss of life even more disturbing.

It is imperative to investigate the circumstances surrounding these attacks, particularly the claim that the military personnel stationed nearby failed to intervene effectively despite having prior knowledge of the threat.

While we sympathize with the families of those affected, particularly those who lost their loved ones, we are calling on affected communities to remain vigilant at all times and uphold their responsibilities as law-abiding citizens.

In light of these unfortunate events, we demand the following:

1. Immediate Investigation: The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) should immediately set up a special board of inquiry to investigate the serial attacks and deaths associated with the activities of organised criminal groups against civilian communties in Plateau State, focusing on the actions and inactions of the military personnel stationed in the area. The investigation should aim to provide clarity on the circumstances leading to the tragic loss of life and hold those responsible accountable, with specific focus on command responsibility relating to the conduct of officers of the STF, under whose Areas of Responsbility (AoR) that such dastardly acts continue to occur in the state.

2. Change in Security Approach: The Federal Government should, as a matter of priority, consider withdrawing all military personnel deployed in flashpoints and replace them with Mobile Police Squads. This change in approach is necessary to ensure a more effective and responsive security strategy that prioritizes fight against asymmetry warfare, which the MOPOL is conversant with.

3. The federal government should support (in words and actions), subnational initiatives at dealing with insecurity, as evident with the existence of Operation Rainbow, a security architecture established by the Plateau State Government, with focus on neighbourhood watch, using the framework that was utilized in the north east, to the effect that a Civilian Joint Task Force was mobilized and armed under the supervision of the military, to respond to the threats posed by the Boko Haram.

The peoole of Nigeria deserve a safe and secure environment, and it is the responsibility of the federal government to guarantee such a right to life, by taking full responsibility to protect.

Signed

Prof. Chris Kwaja
Special Envoy on Peace and Security to The Governor of Plateau State

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu held a closed-door meeting on Friday with Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, and Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Plateau News reports that the meeting, which underscores the President’s continued engagement with key political leaders and state executives, is believed to be part of broader consultations aimed at strengthening federal–state relations.

Governor Eno, who is the leader of the All-Progressives Congress (APC) in Akwa Ibom, was accompanied to the meeting by Akpabio, a former governor of the state, and two other top politicians from the region.
