OPEN LETTER TO HIS EXCELLENCY, GOVERNOR CALEB MANASSEH MUTFWANG
On the Raging Insecurity in Garga Area of Kanam Local Government Area
Your Excellency,
I write to you today not as a politician, nor as a critic, but as a broken-hearted son of the soil, bleeding silently with my people in the Garga Area of Kanam Local Government. This letter carries the pain, the cries, and the buried hopes of innocent Plateau citizens who now sleep in fear, or do not sleep at all.
Sir, Garga is dying slowly, yet loudly. Can you hear us?
We are under siege.
Bandits and terrorists have turned our villages into slaughterfields. Families are being wiped out. Children are growing up with trauma, and many will never know peace again. Our homes are being burned. Our farms, our only means of livelihood, are now occupied or laced with terror. Entire communities have been displaced. Entire generations are being erased.
And yet, we have not seen you.
Your Excellency, since assuming office, you have demonstrated leadership, empathy, and a swift response to security crises across the state, and we sincerely commend you for that. But we ask, with heavy hearts:
Why has Garga been left out?
What have we done to deserve this silence?
Are we not Plateau people too?
Is our blood less red?
Are our lives less worthy?
We are tired of being treated like we don’t exist.
The truth is this; when the Governor does not show up, the enemies feel stronger. And they are growing bolder. We have credible reports that these armed men are regrouping and receiving reinforcements from Zamfara, Katsina, Kebbi,Niger, and Sokoto. Their plan is not just to destroy Garga, they aim to overrun all of Kanam. And if Kanam falls, it will not stop there. It will spread like wildfire across the state.
Yes, we know you inherited this insecurity from a government that chose silence over action. But leadership is not about inheritance. It is about response. It is about courage. And we believe that you have the heart and the will to do what others failed to do.
Garga needs you, now, not tomorrow.
Our people no longer sleep peacefully. Movement is restricted from 5 p.m. to 10 a.m. because the night, and even part of the day, belongs to armed men. Our farmers can no longer access their lands. The few security personnel on ground are overstretched, underequipped, and demoralized. Yet they remain, still trying their best.
Your visit alone could save lives. It would restore hope. It would send a clear message, to victims and criminals alike, that Garga is not abandoned. Your presence would revive the morale of our security agents and give our people the strength to rise again.
We want to hear that you have called an emergency security meeting, not just for general insecurity but specifically for Kanam LGA. We want to hear that you’ve met with Mr. President, the National Security Adviser, the Chief of Defence Staff, and other relevant authorities, and that you’ve demanded a full military operation to flush out those who are destroying our communities.
Just last night, as I write this letter, criminals invaded Dungur, kidnapped two individuals, and attacked Shuwaka, where they seized phones and money from innocent villagers. Though they didn’t kill this time, they made their presence felt, firing shots in the air, spreading fear. Tomorrow, it may be worse. This is not just news. It is our reality.
This insecurity must end. We cannot continue to bury our people every day while the government remains distant. We cannot keep mourning in silence while those we voted for turn away.
Sir, Garga is not just another village. It is the pride of Jhar Chiefdom and the beating heart of Kanam. Ignoring our suffering is like ignoring the soul of Plateau State.
We are your people. We supported you. We believed in you. And we still do. But please, do not let Garga become your silence. Do not let history say you turned away when we needed you most.
You are now the father of all Plateau people, not by tribe, not by religion, not by party, but by divine mandate. And your legacy will not be measured by what you said, but by where you stood when your people were bleeding.
Please, let Garga feel your compassion.
Let Kanam feel your courage.
Let Plateau feel your justice.
And let the killers feel the strength of a government that refuses to remain silent in the face of evil.
With pain, urgency, and hope,
TARU SALIM DUGUB
A Concerned Citizen of Jhar Chiefdom, Kanam LGA
