AFRICOM reveals drug trafficking in Africa jumps sixfold in two years
The United States Africa Command has raised the alarm over a sharp increase in illegal narcotics trafficking across Africa, saying the volume of illicit drug movement on the continent has grown more than sixfold in the past two years.

AFRICOM’s Director of Logistics, Brig Gen Paul Filcek, made this known during a virtual media briefing from the 2026 Africa Logistics and Communications Symposium in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Filcek says the surge in drug trafficking, alongside other transnational crimes, underscored the need for stronger cooperation among African countries and their international partners.

NNPC deploys over 1,000 new employees

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited has deployed over 1,000 young professionals into its workforce after a one-year internship, intensive training and evaluation programme.

The Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Ltd, Bayo Ojulari, made this known in a post on its social media handles, describing the exercise as a major milestone for the national oil company.

According to Ojulari, the newly deployed employees emerged from a rigorous process that included internships, training and performance assessment.

Ojulari notes that the recruitment exercise reflected the company’s commitment to merit-based employment rather than personal connections or background.

The NNPC boss adds that while offer letters secured entry into the organisation, the employees’ performance during the internship year earned them permanent deployment.

Governor Adeleke vows to resist intimidation

Following the detention of Secretary to the State Government, SSG, Mr Teslim Igbalaye, by operatives of the police command over alleged vote buying, Osun Governor, Ademola Adeleke, declared that the people of the state will not succumb to any form of external interference or intimidation as the August 15 governorship election draws near.

Igbalaye was detained along with five others for allegedly committing vote-buying-related offences, as the police recovered Permanent Voter Cards, PVCs, cash sums and voters’ register from his house.

He was detained alongside five others after the police raided his private residence in Osogbo.

Although Adeleke did not directly address the detention in his post, he maintained that no amount of intimidation or harassment would make the people of the state succumb to fear ahead of the election

NSA Ribadu says Federal Government crushing security threats

The National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, has reassured Nigerians of the Federal Government’s commitment to mopping up illegal weapons across the country as part of efforts to secure lives and property.

He said this during the public destruction of 2,819 illicit, decommissioned and unserviceable small arms and light weapons at the Muhammadu Buhari Cantonment, Giri in Abuja.

With this, the Centre has now destroyed 19,000 weapons since it started operations.

Ribadu, who was represented by the Administrator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, PAP, Dr. Dennis Otuaro, says illegal arms are the lifeline of terrorists, bandits, kidnappers and other criminal groups.

Today's news commentary is on the forthcoming celebration of 80 years of service for former Governor Jonah David Jang and the unveiling of his autobiography

It is written by our News and Current Affairs Department

Tomorrow being Saturday and the next day Sunday , the skyline of Plateau state will be aglow this week end as the state prepares to roll out the drums for one of its most illustrious sons, Senator Jonah David Jang

In what has been described as a gathering of “who is who in Nigeria,” the Plateau State Government, led by Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, in conjunction with the Jang family, will on Saturday, August 1, 2026, host an official 80th birthday celebration and the public presentation of the celebrant’s autobiography, titled :"Airman to Politics: My Life.”

The twin events will hold at the Tamarald Event Centre, Jos, and are expected to draw dignitaries from across the political, military, religious, and traditional spectrum.

The book, _“Airman to Politics: My Life” chronicles the remarkable journey of Senator Jang — from his early days as a young airman in the Nigerian Air Force, to his tenure as Military Governor of Benue and Gongola States, and later as two-term civilian Governor of Plateau State and Senator representing Plateau North.

Described by aides as “part memoir, part leadership manual,” the autobiography is expected to offer rare insights into Nigeria’s military and democratic transitions, the challenges of governance on the Plateau, and the personal convictions that have defined Senator Jang’s public life for over five decades.

The public presentation forms the centerpiece of the day’s activities and will feature book reviewers, goodwill messages, and remarks from national leaders.

But the celebration will not end with the book launch.

Organizers have scheduled a Gala Night — an evening expected to blend cultural displays, music, and tributes to the octogenarian.

The spiritual highlight comes the next day, Sunday, August 2, 2026, by 9:00am, with a Thanksgiving Service at COCIN RCC, Du Community in Jos South LGA.

For Governor Mutfwang, the event is more than a birthday. It is, in his words conveyed in the invitation, a celebration “on behalf of the Government and the good people of Plateau State.”

Political watchers note that the joint hosting by the current administration and the Jang family underscores the enduring influence of the former governor and senator in Plateau politics and national affairs.

Political leaders ,Traditional rulers, clergy, former heads of state, former governors, federal lawmakers, and captains of industry are among those expected at Tamarald Event Centre , making the occasion one of the biggest gathering of dignitaries in Jos in recent years.

As invitations go out and preparations peak, there is no doubts that Jos is set for a weekend that blends history, literature, faith, and celebration — all in honor of a man whose life, as the title of his book suggests, has moved _“From Airman to Politics.”

For the people of Plateau, August 1 and 2 will be days to reflect on a legacy of service, and to thank God for 80 years of Senator Jonah Jang.

Army probes leaked DSS memo warning of Adamawa and Borno attacks
Elsewhere but still on security concerns, the Nigerian Army has commenced an investigation into the leakage of a classified Department of State Services intelligence report warning of planned attacks by suspected Boko Haram insurgents and bandits in parts of Adamawa and Borno states.

According to reports, senior officers at the 232 Battalion in Yola, Adamawa State, have launched an internal probe to identify the personnel responsible for circulating the confidential security document, which was originally sent by the DSS to alert the military to impending attacks.

A security source familiar with the development said the leaked document had already been received and registered by the battalion before it found its way into the public domain.

The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak to the media, said the document was already punched in the registry of the 232 Battalion.

Tinubu explains refusal to pay ransom over Oriire abduction
President Bola Tinubu has explained why the Federal Government refused to pay ransom to the terrorists who abducted pupils and teachers from schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, saying security agencies understood the terrain where the victims were held.

The President commended the armed forces for securing the release of the abducted victims and said the successful operation was achieved through the support of the traditional institution and improved security coordination.
