The United Bank for Africa Plc has welcomed Emmanuel Nnorom as its new Group Chairman, days after he officially assumed the role following the retirement of Tony Elumelu.

UBA announced Nnoromโ€™s welcome in a post on its social media platforms on Wednesday, describing him as a seasoned business leader and chartered accountant with more than four decades of experience.

Nnorom officially assumed the position on August 21, 2026, succeeding Elumelu, who retired after completing the maximum tenure permitted for non-executive directors under Central Bank of Nigeria corporate governance guidelines.

Welcoming him to the position, UBA said, โ€œWe welcome Mr. Emmanuel N. Nnorom as the new Group Chairman of United Bank for Africa Plc.

โ€œA seasoned business leader and chartered accountant with over four decades of experience.โ€

The bank noted that Nnorom had spent more than eight years in senior leadership positions within the UBA Group, including as Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of UBA Africa, Group Chief Operating Officer and Group Chief Financial Officer.

It added that he also served as a Non-Executive Director on the UBA board.

โ€œWith his wealth of experience and understanding of UBAโ€™s journey, Mr. Nnorom takes the helm at an important moment in the Groupโ€™s continued growth across Africa and beyond,โ€ the bank stated.

UBA had earlier announced Nnoromโ€™s appointment as Elumeluโ€™s successor, with the appointment taking effect on August 21.

Nnorom joined the UBA board as a Non-Executive Director in 2024 after serving in several executive positions within the group.

During his time with UBA, he served as Group Chief Operating Officer, Executive Director (Group Executive Office), Executive Director (Finance), Executive Director (Risk), and Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of UBA Africa.

As CEO of UBA Africa, Nnorom oversaw the bankโ€™s operations across several African countries, contributing to its pan-African expansion.

Outside UBA, he has held senior positions in major Nigerian companies and financial institutions.

He served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Transnational Corporation Plc between September 2014 and May 2017 and has been the Group Chief Executive Officer of Heirs Holdings since June 2017.

His banking career also includes senior management positions at Standard Trust Bank, now UBA, Diamond Bank, NUB International Bank and Liberty Merchant Bank.

Nnorom is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria and an Honorary Member of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria.

He studied at Templeton College, Oxford, where he completed executive leadership and management programmes.

UBA said his appointment came at an important period in the groupโ€™s continued growth across Africa and beyond....

A Call to Our Leaders: Give Taraba Youths a Better Story

I am deeply saddened by the painful stories involving our youths and the way their struggles continue to make headlines across the nation and beyond.

Over the past two or three months, we heard the heartbreaking story of our young sister who was rescued in another country through the intervention of a good Samaritan. Today, we are once again confronted with another disturbing situation involving a young man said to be an indigene of Karim-Lamido, Taraba State.

These are not the stories our youths deserve.

I sincerely appeal to our leaders at every levelโ€”from our Local Government leaders, State Assembly members, National Assembly members, Commissioners, political leaders, and the State Government to the highest level of leadership: please, let the welfare, protection and future of Taraba youths become a priority.

Our youths are talented, intelligent and full of potential. They deserve meaningful opportunities, empowerment, justice, education, employment and an environment where they can build their future with dignity.

We cannot continue to watch our young people become subjects of painful stories. We need a new narrative for Tarabaโ€”a story of hope, opportunity, success and transformation.

And as we look ahead to the next political tenure, we still believe there is hope. We believe that with the PDP candidate coming into office, there can be renewed commitment to rebuilding Taraba and creating a better future for our youths.

Let us not lose hope. Let our leaders at every level rise to the occasion and give our young people a reason to believe again.

Taraba youths deserve better. Taraba deserves a better story. And together, we can write that story.
