JUST IN: Court Bars Non-Lawyer Police Officers from Representing Police in Civil Cases

The National Industrial Court of Nigeria, Abuja Judicial Division, has ruled that police officers who are not employed in the Specialist Legal Cadre can no longer appear in civil proceedings on behalf of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).

In addition, the court directed the Police Service Commission (PSC) and the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to deploy at least one police lawyer to every police station nationwide.

According to the court, the directive is aimed at strengthening compliance with human rights standards in policing and ensuring that legal matters involving the Nigeria Police Force are handled by qualified legal professionals.

Keyamo Gives Peter Obi Seven Days to Apologise, Pay โ‚ฆ25,000 Airport Parking Fine

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo (SAN), has directed former Labour Party presidential candidate and current Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to publicly apologise to airport personnel and pay a โ‚ฆ25,000 fine over an alleged parking violation at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

In a statement issued on Friday, Keyamo said he ordered an internal investigation after Obi alleged during a recent interview that his vehicle was unjustly clamped at the airport as part of what he described as political persecution.

According to the minister, findings from the investigation, including CCTV footage from the airport, showed that Obi's vehicle was parked in a prohibited area and left unattended for about 30 minutes, prompting airport security officials to clamp its tyres in line with established regulations. He maintained that the officials were unaware the vehicle belonged to Obi and were simply carrying out their lawful duties.

Keyamo further alleged that after the vehicle was clamped, Obi contacted the airport manager directly and requested that it be released. He claimed the vehicle was eventually released without payment of the prescribed โ‚ฆ25,000 parking fine.

The minister stressed that airport parking rules apply equally to all Nigerians, regardless of status or political affiliation.

The minister demanded that Obi issue an unreserved public apology to the airport workers, whom he said had been unfairly portrayed while performing their duties.

He also asked the former Anambra State governor to voluntarily return to the airport and pay the outstanding parking fine.

Keyamo gave Obi seven days to comply with the two demands, warning that failure to do so would prompt him to direct the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) to take further action in accordance with the law.

The development follows Obi's recent claim that he and his associates have faced repeated harassment by government agencies. However, Keyamo rejected the allegation, insisting that the airport incident resulted solely from a violation of parking regulations and not political persecution.
