Following the recent devastating earthquake in eastern Afghanistan, thousands of pregnant women are in urgent need of critical support and medical care. The disaster has severely impacted infrastructure, leaving many roads damaged or completely impassable, which makes reaching remote and isolated communities extremely difficult. In response, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has swiftly mobilized resources to address these urgent needs by deploying four mobile health teams. These teams are equipped with emergency medical supplies and ambulances to provide essential maternal and reproductive health services directly to affected populations. Additionally, UNFPA has sent large quantities of reproductive health supplies to facilitate thousands of safe childbirths under challenging conditions. To further support the well-being and dignity of women and girls, essential hygiene kits—including menstrual health products—have been distributed in the hardest-hit areas. Unfortunately, for millions of individuals living in regions affected by armed conflict, this fundamental right remains out of reach. Over the past year, there has been a staggering 44% increase in attacks targeting education, putting countless students and educators at severe risk. These violent incidents have led to numerous deaths, abductions, and lasting psychological trauma among those involved.

Such attacks are not merely assaults on physical buildings or institutions—they represent direct violations of children’s rights, threaten their ability to access quality education, and undermine their hopes and opportunities for the future. Beyond this, these acts erode the resilience and stability of entire communities that depend on education as a foundation for recovery and growth.

It is imperative that schools remain safe havens—protected spaces where children can learn, grow, and thrive without fear. Recognizing the urgent need to address this crisis, the International Day to Protect Education from Attack is observed every year on Tuesday, highlighting the importance of safeguarding educational environments worldwide.
