In 1967, the then Head of State, Lt. Col. Yakubu Gowon, inspected the first Passing Out Parade of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA). Standing behind him was the pioneer Commandant of the Academy, Brigadier Varma (an Indian). To his left was Cadet Salihu Ibrahim, who commanded the parade and emerged as the best graduating cadet of Regular Course 1. Salihu Ibrahim later rose to the position of Chief of Army Staff in the Nigerian Army before his retirement.

Other members of Regular Course 1 included Cadets Oladipo Diya, Mamman Kontagora, Joshua Dogonyaro, Mohammed Aliyu Gusau, Allison Madueke, Paul Osa Ogbebor, B.T.S. Kachim, Mohammed Bello Khaliel, P.A. Arokoyo, O.I. William, M. Dahiru, among others.

The case involved European soldiers who had seized goods from local traders in the city. The proceeding marked an early example of the colonial administration imposing its own system of justice following the British occupation of Kano.
