What happens when teacher support moves closer to the school?

Our recent School-Based Coaching research in Jigawa and Kaduna states is exploring that question, and yesterday, findings from the study were presented by Elizabeth Adelman of FHI 360 at the 2026 What Works Hub for Global Education Conference in Oxford.

The work has taken us from training and field implementation to school visits, stakeholder discussions and research dissemination.

One observation from our school visits was particularly interesting: Head Teachers described teachers receiving more support through School-Based Coaching.

Today we use an egg crate to practise counting backwards from 10 to 0 and then forwards again from 0 to 10.

Children learn that counting backwards means taking away one at a time, while counting forwards means adding one at a time.

This lesson helps learners:

✅ Count backwards from 10 to 0

✅ Count forwards from 0 to 10

✅ Strengthen number recognition and sequencing

✅ Understand that zero means empty
