KADUNA ASSEMBLY SPEAKER SPONSORS BILL TO REGULATE HOUSE RENT, IN LINE WITH GOVERNOR UBA SANI’S PEOPLE-CENTRED LEADERSHIP
The Speaker of the Kaduna State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Yusuf Liman Dahiru, is sponsoring a bill seeking to regulate house rent charges imposed by landlords and property owners across Kaduna State.
The proposed legislation is coming in response to growing concerns and repeated calls from residents over the rising cost of accommodation and the increasingly high amounts being demanded by some landlords and property owners.
For many residents, particularly low-income earners, workers, students and young families, the rising cost of rent has become a significant financial burden. The bill therefore seeks to provide a fairer and more balanced framework for regulating residential rent, while protecting the legitimate interests of both landlords and tenants.
The initiative is in line with the people-centred leadership of the Executive Governor of Kaduna State, Malam Uba Sani, whose administration has consistently prioritised policies and programmes aimed at improving the welfare of citizens, reducing economic hardship and making government more responsive to the needs of the people.
The proposed law is currently at the committee stage of the Kaduna State House of Assembly, where it is undergoing detailed consideration. A public hearing on the bill is also underway, providing an opportunity for members of the public and relevant stakeholders, including tenants, landlords, property owners, estate professionals, developers, civil society organisations and other interested groups to contribute their views and make recommendations.
The public hearing is particularly important in ensuring that the final legislation reflects the realities of the housing sector in Kaduna State and strikes an appropriate balance between preventing excessive and exploitative rent charges and safeguarding the rights of property owners.
By sponsoring the bill, Speaker Yusuf Liman is demonstrating the commitment of the Kaduna State House of Assembly to addressing issues that directly affect the everyday lives of residents.
The legislative initiative further reflects the Assembly’s commitment, under his leadership, to supporting the people-centred agenda of Governor Uba Sani and advancing policies that promote fairness, social welfare, economic relief and a better quality of life for the people of Kaduna State.
The Kaduna State House of Assembly will continue to engage stakeholders throughout the legislative process to ensure that the proposed law is practical, fair and responsive to the housing needs of the people.
