Ephesians 5:22 is the verse most people quote: “Wives, submit to your husbands.” But the verse right before it, Ephesians 5:21, says, “Submit to one another.” Paul first spoke about mutual submission among believers before he addressed husbands and wives specifically. Yet many people emphasize verse 22 while ignoring verse 21 completely.
Then in verse 25, husbands are commanded to love their wives as Christ loved the church. And how did Christ love the church? He served, washed feet, carried the burden, and ultimately gave His life. Jesus Christ did not lead through domination or control but through sacrifice and humility. So the same passage that calls wives to submit also calls husbands to selfless, sacrificial love. Many people stop at verse 22 and overlook the rest of the chapter.
Similarly, 1 Corinthians 11:3 says that the head of the woman is the man, and the head of Jesus Christ is God.
Some interpret this to mean that men are superior to women because they assume “head” automatically means authority or superiority. But the verse itself challenges that interpretation.
As a Christians I believe that God and Christ are one, equal in nature and essence. So if God being the head of Christ does not mean Christ is inferior, then a man being the head of his wife cannot automatically mean she is inferior either. The meaning of “headship” cannot suddenly change within the same sentence just to support a preferred argument.
Too often, people are not approaching these verses with consistency or careful understanding, but with selective interpretation that supports what they already want to believe.
