Why Falsehood Can Never Produce Good Leadership

Today, social media—especially Facebook—has been flooded with debates about Peter Obi following his recent engagement with Northern political stakeholders. Interestingly, this is not even his first major appearance in the North. Those who now criticize his presence seem to forget that he was welcomed into national politics by many of the same political forces when he served as a vice-presidential candidate in 2019.

What is most concerning, however, is not political disagreement—it is the growing spread of misinformation and character attacks. The volume of accusations being circulated has led me to reflect deeply on the values we claim to uphold. As Muslims, we are taught that false accusations, slander, and deliberate misinformation are forbidden. Yet many of the claims being made today can be verified or disproved within seconds through publicly available information.

This is not about supporting or opposing any particular politician. It is about respecting the truth.

In a digital age where facts are readily accessible, it is troubling to see educated and uneducated individuals alike sharing unverified allegations. Political competition should be based on ideas, competence, and vision—not on propaganda and distortion.

Some critics point to ethnic conflicts in parts of Southern Nigeria as evidence against Peter Obi, while ignoring the reality that insecurity is a national problem. The North has suffered immensely from terrorism, banditry, farmer-herder conflicts, and other security challenges. No region in Nigeria is completely free from its own struggles.

This raises an important question:

Are we evaluating leaders based on facts and performance, or are we allowing emotions and political loyalty to shape our judgment?

Every citizen has the right to support any political party or candidate. But democracy is weakened when criticism is built on falsehood rather than evidence.

Final Thought

A lie may win an argument for a day, but it cannot build a nation.

If Nigeria is to move forward, we must learn to challenge politicians with facts, not fabrications; with evidence, not emotions; and with truth, not propaganda.

Because good leadership can only emerge from an informed society—and an informed society is one that values truth above political convenience. 🔥
