Niger Republic Drops French, Adopts Hausa As National Language

The military-led government of Niger has officially declared Hausa as the country’s new national language, marking a significant departure from its colonial past where French dominated public life and governance.

The news reaching us is that the change was formally announced in a new national charter published on March 31 in a special edition of the government’s official journal. According to the document, “The national language is Hausa,” while “the working languages are English and French.”

Hausa is already the most widely spoken language across Niger, particularly in the populous regions of Zinder, Maradi, and Tahoua. With a population of around 26 million, the majority of Nigeriens understand and speak Hausa, compared to just 13 percent—around three million people—who are fluent in French.

The new charter also recognizes nine other indigenous languages—Zarma-Songhay, Fula, Kanuri, Gourmanche, Arabic, and others—as part of the country’s “spoken languages,” giving them official acknowledgment.

This language policy shift follows a national dialogue held in February where the military government, led by General Abdourahamane Tiani, received renewed support from delegates.

During the meeting, Tiani was endorsed to remain in power for another five years, solidifying the junta’s grip on the country after seizing power in a July 2023 coup that ousted then-President Mohamed Bazoum.

Since the takeover, the junta has taken decisive steps to sever longstanding ties with France. These include the expulsion of French military forces, the closure of French diplomatic missions, and the renaming of roads and public institutions previously bearing French names.

Niger’s move mirrors actions taken by other Sahelian neighbors—Mali and Burkina Faso—also under military rule and formerly French colonies.

The three nations have not only distanced themselves from France but have also withdrawn from the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie, a France-led body promoting French language and culture globally.

Some corps members confirmed the payment to newsmen on Wednesday, stating that the increased allowance had begun to be disbursed.

Several corps members also shared screenshots of the credited allowance.

While many are celebrating the long-awaited increase, some corps members are still awaiting their alerts, hoping for a swift completion of the disbursement process.

The announcement of the pay increase by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had initially sparked excitement among corps members nationwide.

For nearly six months after the announcement, serving corps members continued receiving the previous N33,000 allowance, introduced in 2020 under former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Former President Jonathan Breaks Silence On Rivers Emergency Rule.

Former President Dr. Goodluck Jonathan has broken his silence over the political crisis in Rivers State, expressing deep concern over the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and other elected officials, stating that such actions tarnish Nigeria’s global reputation.

Jonathan made these remarks while speaking as the chairman at the Haske Satumari Foundation Colloquium in Abuja on Saturday.

Jonathan criticized the removal of elected officials, emphasizing that these actions by key figures in the executive and legislative branches present Nigeria in a negative light.

He noted that while former presidents typically refrain from commenting on national issues to avoid inflaming political tensions, he felt compelled to speak out due to mounting calls from Nigerians urging him to address the situation.

The former president underscored the importance of maintaining the integrity of governance institutions, warning that undue influence over the judiciary erodes public confidence in the legal system.

He also highlighted how Nigeria’s international image and investment climate are directly impacted by the conduct of its governmental arms.

Meanwhile, on the same day, the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) voiced support for President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State. NNPP National Chairman, Dr. Agbo Major, defended Tinubu’s decision, arguing that no responsible government would allow a worsening crisis to go unchecked.

Major stated that President Tinubu, as Nigeria’s Chief Security Officer, had access to intelligence that might not be publicly available. He suggested that without intervention, the situation in Rivers could have escalated further, posing significant security threats.

He also criticized some political leaders who, instead of promoting peace, allowed the crisis to deteriorate before stepping in with belated interventions and criticisms.

FG Restricts NYSC Mobilization To Full-Time HND Graduates.

The Federal Government has announced that only graduates of full-time Higher National Diploma (HND) programs will be eligible for mobilization into the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

This declaration was made by the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, following discussions with the Director-General of NYSC.

In a statement released by Boriowo Folasade, Director of Press & Public Relations at the Federal Ministry of Education, it was clarified that part-time HND graduates will not be eligible for NYSC mobilization.

The statement emphasized that this policy reflects the Ministry’s commitment to equity, fairness, and inclusivity in the nation’s education system.

To ensure a smooth implementation, the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) has been directed to fast-track the collation of data for eligible HND graduates.

“All Rectors of Polytechnics have been instructed to upload the necessary graduate data onto the newly created HND admission portal,” Folasade stated.

Dr. Alausa reaffirmed that the NYSC scheme is exclusively for full-time HND graduates, urging those eligible to take advantage of this opportunity and complete their mobilization process without delay.

He also reiterated the government’s dedication to fostering equal opportunities for all qualified Nigerian graduates and ensuring their participation in national development through the NYSC scheme.

CHRICED Condemns Rivers State Emergency Rule, Calls For Wike’s Dismissal

The Resource Centre for Human Rights and Civic Education (CHRICED) has condemned the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing it as a “coup against the people.”

Grassroots Parrot reports that the civil society organization is demanding the immediate dismissal of Nyesom Wike as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), citing his alleged role in the state’s political crisis.

President Tinubu’s declaration of emergency rule in Rivers State has drawn widespread criticism, with CHRICED asserting that it is a direct violation of democratic principles.

CHRICED, in a statement by its Executive Director, Comrade Ibrahim Zikirullahi on Thursday, said the emergency rule disregards the will of the people who elected their leaders and undermines constitutional governance.

The emergency rule has resulted in the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, Mrs. Ngozi Odu, and all members of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

In their place, President Tinubu appointed Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas (Retd) as an administrator to oversee the state’s affairs for an initial six-month period.

However, CHRICED argues that while Section 305 of the 1999 Constitution grants the President the power to declare a state of emergency, it does not authorize the removal of an elected governor without due process.

“The Constitution is clear on how a governor can be removed—through impeachment by the State House of Assembly with a two-thirds majority vote, a role for the Chief Judge, and an investigative panel,”

“By instituting emergency rule in Rivers State, President Tinubu appears to endorse military coups, undermining his credibility to critique the military governments in Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger.” CHRICED stated.

The organization also criticized the federal government’s handling of the political crisis in Rivers State, accusing it of bias. CHRICED pointed to the Supreme Court’s ruling on February 28, which outlined steps for resolving the crisis.

The group claims that pro-Wike lawmakers in the Rivers Assembly actively obstructed Governor Fubara from implementing the ruling, yet the federal government moved swiftly to suspend the governor instead of seeking peaceful solutions.

CHRICED maintains that Wike, a former governor of Rivers State, is at the heart of the crisis, accusing him of destabilizing the state to maintain political control.

“The suspension of all elected officials while allowing Wike to remain in office as minister exposes the partisan nature of the President’s decision,” the organization stated.

Beyond Rivers State, CHRICED raised concerns about broader political interference in opposition-controlled states, citing Kano as another example. The organization accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of using federal institutions to weaken opposition parties ahead of future elections.

“The federal government’s meddling in Kano’s emirate crisis and its use of security forces against the state government mirror its approach in Rivers State. This pattern of undemocratic interference threatens Nigeria’s democracy and economic stability,” CHRICED warned.

In response to the unfolding situation, CHRICED has issued a set of demands, asking for immediate Reversal of Emergency Rule and Removal of Wike as Minister. “Wike must be dismissed from his ministerial role and investigated for his role in the crisis.” It said.

CHRICED also tasked the federal government to refrain from politically motivated interference in opposition-controlled states to ensure fairness and stability.

The group said failure to reverse the emergency rule could set a dangerous precedent. “If this action is not overturned, it could signal a return to dictatorship and erode the democratic progress Nigeria has made,”

The organization insists that true leadership demands impartiality and accountability, urging the President to act in the best interest of the Nigerian people.

AGF Backs Wike, Justifies FG’s Timely Intervention In Rivers Crisis.

The Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, has stated that the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, should not be blamed for the declaration of a State of Emergency in Rivers State.

Grassroots Parrot reports on Tuesday that President Bola Tinubu declared a State of Emergency in the oil-rich state, attributing the decision to the prolonged political crisis in the state.

As part of the emergency measures, Governor Siminalayi Fubara and members of the State House of Assembly were suspended for six months. The president appointed former Chief of Naval Staff, Ibok Ibas, as the sole administrator.

This move has sparked widespread reactions, with critics accusing Tinubu of siding with Wike and placing the blame solely on Governor Fubara.

Fagbemi, while speaking to State House correspondents on Thursday, dismissed allegations of Wike’s involvement, shifting responsibility to Governor Fubara.

“There are occasions when it comes to national issues, and we have to come out plainly. Was Wike the one that asked the State Assembly to be demolished? I don’t see the hand of the Minister of the FCT in what happened,” Fagbemi said.

The Attorney-General further pointed out that the Supreme Court had determined that Fubara anticipated an impeachment threat and ordered the destruction of the House of Assembly to prevent it.

“If the Supreme Court concluded that there was no government in Rivers, then there was nothing a responsible leader could have done other than take the decision made on Tuesday. The President took a very bold decision. As things stand, we have a duty to give maximum respect to the judgment of the Supreme Court,” he added.

Fagbemi also advised those opposing the emergency rule to seek redress through the National Assembly, stating, “If the National Assembly feels what the President did was not okay, he will not have two-thirds support from them. We are expecting that within 48 hours, something will come out.”
