Drama in Senate as Natasha Confronts Akpabio Over Ab%rtion Debate, Oshiomhole Cites Rule to Stop Her

There was mild drama during Tuesday’s plenary session in the Nigerian Senate as Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan confronted Senate President Godswill Akpabio after being denied the chance to speak on the issue of abortion.

Senator Natasha, visibly displeased, pleaded to be heard, saying, “Mr. Senate President, please may I speak. I’m a woman, and ab%rtion has to do with women it’s very important, sir.”

The Senate President responded that the matter had already been stepped down, but he briefly allowed her to add a comment if necessary. “This has been stepped down in totality, distinguished senator, but if you have anything to add, you can say,” Akpabio stated.

However, former Edo State governor and senator, Adams Oshiomhole, immediately objected, insisting that parliamentary rules must be respected.

“Mr. President, we’ve been tutored over and over that when a matter has been concluded and you’ve dropped the gavel, if you grant an exception to distinguished Senator Natasha, then you must extend the same extension to us which makes our rule meaningless. The rule should be obeyed. We have said no discussion, and she should obey the rule,” Oshiomhole maintained.

In his final ruling, Akpabio clarified that he did not initially know the nature of Natasha’s intended comment, saying, “I am not a spirit to know what the senator wants to say. If I knew, I would have referred her to Rule 52, Subsection 6. Since the Senate has come to a conclusion, it shall be out of order.”

He then ruled Senator Natasha out of order, ending the exchange.

BREAKING: Ogun State Unveils Cancer Clinic, Targets Free Screening for 10,000 Women
The Ogun State Government has launched a new cancer screening clinic, as part of its commitment to improving women’s healthcare and tackling the growing burden of cancer in the state.

Governor Dapo Abiodun, who inaugurated the facility on Tuesday, announced that the government plans to offer free cancer screening to 10,000 women across the state in the coming months.

According to the governor, the initiative aims to promote early detection and prevention, especially among women in rural communities who often lack access to quality healthcare services.

He added that the cancer clinic is equipped with modern diagnostic tools and trained medical professionals to provide early intervention and counseling for patients at risk.

Health Commissioner Dr. Tomi Coker described the move as a major milestone in the state’s fight against cancer, noting that awareness campaigns and community outreach programs will accompany the screenings.

The Ogun State Government urged women to take advantage of the free program, emphasizing that early detection saves lives.

Trial Of Lagos Teacher Accused Of Sexually Abusing 11 Students Stalled As Prosecutor Fails To Appear

The trial of Egberongbe Gbenga, a Further Mathematics teacher accused of sexually abusing at least 11 female students at Babs Fafunwa Millennium Senior Secondary School, Ojodu-Berger, Lagos, was on Monday stalled due to the absence of the state prosecutor, Mr. Philip Ihiehie.

SaharaReporters learnt that the case, which also involves the school’s principal, Mrs. Omotayo Abiodun Osunrinde, could not proceed as scheduled.

The prosecutor was absent on Monday, and it was adjourned to November 20, 2025,” a source privy to the court proceedings said.

Egberongbe and Osunrinde are standing trial over their alleged roles in a sex-for-marks scandal that has shaken the Lagos public-school system, with the management accused of trying to shield the teacher and suppress evidence of years of sexual exploitation of students.

Earlier reports by SaharaReporters detailed how Egberongbe was accused of preying on his students under the guise of improving their mathematics grades.

One victim recounted how the teacher summoned her alone to his office in Senior Secondary School 1, promising to help her with marks if she “co-operated.”

Another described being cornered in a classroom and fighting him off while shouting for help.

Multiple victims said the abuse continued unchecked for years because Egberongbe was not a government employee but personally hired by the principal, who allegedly ignored complaints.

The case only came to light after Clement James, a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member and alumnus of the school, reported the matter to the Lagos State Ministry of Education, Education District VI, and the Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA).

Following his report, Egberongbe was arrested in March 2025 and charged in court.

Instead of protecting the victims, the school’s management allegedly turned against the whistleblower, banning him from campus, seizing his phone, and detaining him inside a toilet when he refused to delete evidence of the abuse.

James told SaharaReporters that he escaped only after officials from the Quality Assurance Department arrived unexpectedly at the school.

The teacher was arraigned and later granted bail of N300,000.

The Lagos State DSVA later confirmed that the case was still active, insisting it “will not be swept under the carpet.”

Repeated efforts by SaharaReporters to get comments from Principal Osunrinde and Vice Principal Longe were unsuccessful.

The school authorities declined calls, while the police said it would be prejudicial to discuss a matter already before the court.
